Zephyrum is an anthromorphic action RPG by Morandal Games and published by Astralitz. It is an action RPG revolving around anthromorphic animals trying to ward off the mechanical demons known as the Zephyrum, but the big twist is that they aren't JUST a new enemy to the people of Elwyenn...

The game has gotten positive reception, for it's story about forgiveness, faith, and facing ambition, with the plot from Arthur Miller's The Crucible being reused and revamped for a more action-oriented adventure.

Plot[]

Four hooded sorcerers are seen dancing through a ritual in the Akras Forest. After been spotted by an holy agent, the four sorcerers run off in different directions... never to be seen again. A mysterious rift that was unknownly cast by a crucible of sorcerers sends out machines known as the Zephyrum, taking over the land and taking Elwyenn's people hostage. Now, a band of agents known as the Crucible of Erinys are trying to ward off the Zephyrum, but the Zephyrum BACK makes their OWN crucible known as the Crucible of Zephyrum, which have different goals to want and spare. Now, the Erinys have to make a deal-with-deal with the Zephyrum to end an never-ending rift invasion.

Aside from the nations fighting the Zephyrum, the Supreme Court of Akras is on witch trials to find out who were involved during the witchcraft, but they have to trace after WHO did what, since they have no evidence on the four hooded sorcerers.

Gameplay[]

The game plays more like an hack-n-slash action RPG with elements borrowed from Devil May Cry and NieR. Players make their character, select whether they're a boy or a girl, choose their animal (dog, cat, fox, rabbit), choose their class, and then they are on their way. The speed of the combat is around the same-speed as the Witcher games to be less chaotic with each-other, but there are stylish particles from the melee weapons to resemble more character-action.

Players get to choose an arrangement of four classes; warriors, archers, mages, or thieves, which later have sub-classes which add more combos and skills to their combat. For example, the Dark Mage sub-classes adds dark magic combos, while the Fighter sub-class focuses more on sword mastery in terms of combat. As sub-classes go on; they unlock more moves in their movelist and new tactics.

There are major equipments; including the following;

  • Weapons (swords, bows, wands)
  • Armors (greaves, armors, trousers, helmets, shoes)
  • Accessories (rings, jewelry)

What makes the game notably fair enough for an RPG is that in each stage, you get 3 lives, which means that everytime you die, you respawn and lose 1 live. Die 3 times, the games' over. (If you're in co-op you have to spectate and hope that the players win)

Each of the major key bosses are marked by a vivid icon, which unlike regular bosses key bosses have an unexpected gameplay exchange. For example, the final battle against Sistina has you fighting on court as defense, while the enemy lawyers are throwing evidence on their side.

There is a max level of 99, with beginner class from 1 to 10, then 1st job from 11 to 34, then 2nd job from 35 to 69, then 3rd job from 70 to 99.

There is an "absurdly" high level cap, the campaign can be finished at level between 25 to 30, with 2nd jobs and 3rd jobs being far away, but the big catch is that after you beat the game, you get to loop it again. There are 5 loops:

  • Timeloop 1; Normal: Starting loop.
  • Timeloop 2; Hard: Harder loop from level 30 to level 48
  • Timeloop 3; Legend: Expert loop from level 49 to 60.
  • Timeloop 4; Mythic: Elite loop from 61 to 79. Enemies gain increased AI and speed, and the enemies' formation changes.
  • Timeloop 5; Ultimate: Ultimate loop from 80 to 99. Enemies are merciless, and lives are reduced from 3 to 1.

The art-style is used is more an chibi-ish cartoon style, similar in fashion to Mario games, and Maplestory 2.

Reception[]

Zephyrum has gotten positive reception so far, while praising for it's story and it's cooperative combat system. It got 80's on Metacritic, 8.8 on IGN, and a 8/10 on GameSpot.

It has been notably drawn comparisons to Disney's Toontown, as both games revolve around anthromorphic animals fighting against armies of evil machines. Much later, it was also compared to Platinum's NieR Automata, but Zephyrum has cartoon anthro animals fighting off machines, and Platinum has lolita soldiers fighting off machines.

It also had comparisons to Bungie's Destiny, however Zephyrum improved a LOT more from Destiny;

  • Zephyrum has 4 base classes and three sub-classes each with their own fighting style. Destiny only has 3 classes and 3 sub-classes, and no base classes.
  • Zephyrum allows you to forge and inlay weapons, while Destiny has you stuck with the stats.

Legends version[]

Zephyrum was re-released as a Legends version which comes equipped with all the DLC for RazerPocket and AstralOracle.

Trivia[]

  • The Magna Mortem spell is based on the same spell from Harry Potter.
