Zeekeeper is a gaurdian deity for Pi'illo Island that first appears in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. He helped them take down Antasma many thousands of years before the events of the game, sealing the villain inside the Dream World, in Dream's Deep.

History[]

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]

Description[]

The Zeekeeper is a large creature with multicolored feathers across a egg-shaped body hoisted by skinny legs. Their face consists of three eyes and a long beak. The feathers go in a pattern- pink at his head, blue towards middle, and green towards the base. A small plume of yellow-pink feathers sit on his head above his eyes. When dazed, his eyes show a sequence of red and yellow rings that expand. His third eye is not normally seen unless he uses his Wakebeam attack. This third eye is known as the Mind's Eye.

Zeekeeper X, a special variant created for the Battle Ring, has a different palette scheme. His feathers are purple near the head and fade to yellow above his legs, and he has black sclera with white pupils.

Personality[]

At first glance, the Zeekeeper seems like a serious guardian, speaking formally and very confident in his own abilities. He is originally dismissive towards Mario and Luigi, although compliments their bravery in facing him. As the battle rages on and Giant Luigi takes the upper hand, he becomes more impressed and comments on how they push his powers.

After being defeated and meeting with Dreambert, the Zeeekeper is much lazier, greedier, and more laid-back than on first impression. He has a "surfer dude" dialect and doesn't treat Antasma like a real threat. He has no motivation to stop him. He asks for 80 million coins to take down Neo Bwoser's Castle and turns the Dream Stone into a Dream Coin instead of rebuilding it properly. However, he still has good in his heart as shown in the end of the game. He goes against his 80 million asking price and saves Mario, Peach, and Luigi from falling to their deaths. He even causes the giant Dram Coin to become destroyed and shatter into a rain of coins for all people in the island to buy their wishes. However, this is now made into a tourist attraction, showing that while he may not be as greedy as he let on, he still has a bit of greed inside him.

Appearances[]

Mario & Luigi: Pikmin Trouble[]

The Zee Egg appears as an item in Mario & Luigi: Pikmin Trouble, which summons the Zeekeeper to do an attack if timed right. He takes Mario and Luigi into the skies and prepares a Wakeorb for Mario and Luigi to hammer upon lining up with it for it to crash down on a single target for maximum damage. He also seems to be a boss in the game, and a plush of him is at the center of a trading quest.

Mario & Luigi: Nightmare Bros.[]

The Zeekeeper returns to bring the Dream Coin into the plot and gets captured by Bowser & Antasma, but before he can be captured he teleports the Dream Coin to the two brothers. As such, it sets off what begins a cliffhanger for the plot, as Bowser sends troops to locate Mario and Luigi who have the Dream Coin.

Super Smash Bros. Endgame[]

Main article: Luigi (SSB8)

Zeekeeper appears as part of Luigi's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Endgame, which is known as the Dream Realm. In this Final Smash, Luigi sleeps and opens a portal to the Dream Realm, where Luiginoids ride on the Zeekeeper to do the Zee Egg special attack from Dream Team as they emerge from the portal. Energy Balls explode on nearby foes and they start to blast out from the portal. They presumbably fly back into the portal when the portal finally closes and Luigi wakes up.

Mario & Luigi: Dimensional Menace[]

Zeekeeper reappears in Mario & Luigi: Dimensional Menace as a series of bosses from Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, seemingly reprising his boss fight in it's entirity from that game with no differences.

Zeekeeper's Massive Ascension[]

In this strange spin-off, the Zeekeeper fuses with the Dream Stone to become a pseudo god-like being. However, he is possessed by a strange evil force that requires investigations to find clues about. The Zeekeeper will send out forces to battle the heroes of the game and also go on a rampage where the Zeekeeper chases the player in an endless runner style level.

Nintendo All-Stars Chess[]

The Zeekeeper is the Bishop for the Dream Warriors in Nintendo All-Stars Chess, which is a unique faction made entirely out of Nintendo characters heavily related to dreams. The Bishop has no restrictions in distance for each move, but is limited to diagonal movement. This is similar to the Rook in terms of how it works, but only in the diagonal directions.

Nintendo & Fantendo Play: Dodgeball![]

Zeekeeper appears in Nintendo & Fantendo Play: Dodgeball! as part of the Red Faction, the team consisting of Nintendo characters.

The Zeekeeper opens it's third eye to unleash a colorful beam that sends back any balls coming towards it back at a higher speed, potentially hitting opponents in the chaos.

Cameos[]

Mario Kart: Speed Saga[]

A Dodger Glider by the name of the Zeekeeper appears in Mario Kart: Speed Saga.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Zeekeeper showcases many abilities in his battle, primarily having the ability to fly. He can also launch explosive eggs which have to be hit back with a hammer or other blunt weapon to deflect them, which will explode near the Zeekeepper to deal damage. He can also create moving energy balls in the sky that can cluster together. A large energy ball can be created to go in a specific set pattern.

The Zeekeeper can also open dimensional rifts, and in one dimensional rift characters fly in zero gravity. He can also awaken his third eye, known as his Mind's Eye, to unleash a super powerful beam known as the Wakebeam. This attack is only seen once to destroy Neo Bowser Castle, utterly demolishing it. It is suggested he has more powers, generally being deity-level in power and skill.

Specific Abilties[]

  • Wakebeam - Shooting a rainbow colored beam from his Mind's Eye, this beam was shown to destroy the forcefield around Neo Bowser Castle and send it crashing down to the ground for Mario and Luigi to enter into. This seems to be Zeekeeper's most powerful ability, as he only uses it once and initally asks 80 million coins for using this power.
  • Zee Egg - Technically one of Mario's abilities, however the Zeekeeper is heavily involved. The Zeekeeper is summoned by the Egg, who then carries Mario and Luigi into the sky and shoots out a Wake Orb which descends towards foes. The Zeekeeper chases after it and the player must use the circle pad to move the Zeekeeper from side to side to line him up with the Wake Orb. The orb can be poundeded by the brothers' hammers to increase the power of the attack. It deals damage to one target but does splash damage to nearby foes. This decreases their defense by chance.
