The gameplay is changed greatly because of new opportunities, such as the 2 screened gameplay of the Wii U and the HD graphics it comes with. Action mode contains of a number of rounds that the player decides, up to 99, and each round contains of 10 stages. Before starting the game, the player chooses with which Yoshi he wants to play, the level in which he wants to play, the speed that the blocks fall with, the amount of different cookies and the music. After beating a stage, a cutscene shows and the game continues by asking for the specific stage details again.

VS mode is a simple player(s) vs player(s)/COM(s) battle. The players choose specify in which level they want to play and with which features and Yoshi's. The goal is to have the stage cleared first by eating all cookies. In this battle, also power-ups can be found and used to slow down other players.
