Backward Compatibility Wii
Forward Compatibility Wii U (some games incompatible)

Wii 2 is a variation of the Wii U system to be released by Nintendo. Serving as a lower-cost alternative to the Wii U, the Wii 2 forgoes the GamePad controller for a Wii Remote Plus. While all Wii games and most Wii U games will be compatible with Wii 2, some Wii U games may be incompatible, due to lack of support for Wii peripherals. Wii 2 is expected to be introduced sometime in 2014 for $149 in North America, €109 in the European Union, £89 in the United Kingdom, and $169 in Australia.

Hardware

The Wii 2 console is exactly the same as the outgoing Wii U Basic Set console, aside from a Wii 2 label replacing the Wii U label. While Wii U is now offered with black as the only color option, Wii 2 inherits the white color of the Wii U Basic Set.

Also, the internals of the Wii 2 have been unchanged from those of the Wii U Basic Set. The Wii 2 retains the tri-core PowerPC CPU and AMD Radeon APU of the Wii U.

Compatibility

Wii 2 will be fully compatible with the accessories and games of Wii. However, not all Wii U games and applications will be compatible right away. All Wii U titles compatible with Wii 2 will be given a label indicating Wii 2 compatibility. For Wii U games that only support the GamePad, Nintendo has proposed alternative control configurations. For instance, touch screen controls on the Wii U GamePad can be changed out for the Wii Remote Plus' IR pointer controls. Also, information displayed on the GamePad's screen can be shown on the top screen instead. Motion controls for the Wii U GamePad can be replicated with the Wii Remote Plus. Finally, for games that make use of the GamePad's complex button scheme, either the Wii U Pro Controller or the Wii Remote Plus and a Classic Controller Pro can be used.
