Whomps are a possible sub-species of Thwomp that attacks Mario by falling over and try to crush Mario. Mario can defeat it by ground-pounding its back.

New Super Mario Bros. D.I.Y.
Whomps appear for a second time in a New Super Mario Bros. game in New Super Mario Bros. D.I.Y. A boss called Mega Whomp appears in the game, a beta boss in the original New Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Galaxy 2.5
In Super Mario Galaxy 2.5, Whomps reappear. Mario can defeat them by ground pounding on their back, crushing them. They mostly appear in fortress levels and their is also a new species of Whomp called the Spiky Whomp, which is brown. It has spikes on it's back so that if Mario tries to ground pound on them, he will be damaged. He can only defeat them by ground pounding with a Rainbow Star.
New Super Mario Bros YoYo Games
Whomps return, but they only appear in Morton's Airship, albeit that the hidden boss in Poisoned Jungle is the Whomp King.
