Villagers are humanoid characters who live in a town in the Animal Crossing series.
Non-playable villagers, also referred to as animals and residents, are anthropomorphic animals with unique designs and catchphrases. They engage in similar activities to the player. Each animal has a personality that determines their dialogue and behavior. These are gendered; the original six personalities (normal and lazy, peppy and jock, and snooty and cranky) are pairs of female and male equivalents. Animal Crossing: New Leaf added the big sister personality for female villagers, and the smug personality for male villagers.
The player characters are stylized humans. Before Animal Crossing: New Horizons, their facial appearance was determined by a questionnaire at the start of the game and could not be changed. In addition to outfits, the series has gained customization options such as hairstyles and skin tones.
In crossover appearances like the Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart series, "Villager" specifically refers to the human characters in crossover appearances, as they would otherwise have no distinguishing official name. They are generally not customizable in these appearances, and take the appearances of generic villagers used in Animal Crossing promotional artwork.
Villagers are often contrasted with special characters, also called special animals. These do not interact with the player in the same way as standard animal villagers, and instead provide other features in the game, such as civic infrastructure, businesses, transport, concerts, and events. Because spinoffs and crossovers can lose this differentiation, they may be listed here as "special villagers" in place of their personality type.
Appearances[]
Super Duper Smash Bros.[]
In Super Duper Smash Bros., a Villager (under the name of "Animal Crossing Boy") makes an appearance as a playable fighter. He is the only playable character chosen from the Animal Crossing series.
Animal Crossing & Sonic at the Olympic Games Paris 2024[]
In Animal Crossing & Sonic at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, Villagers appear as one of the three possible custom character types, along with Miis and Avatars. They are playable in every event. They can be given a custom appearance and name, and the player can have multiple Villagers. Their appearance is largely the same as in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with all the same options excluding the custom design face paint and clothes available by default. Various clothing and sports equipment can be bought for them from the Clothing and Equipment Shops, respectively.
As a custom character, the Villager can appear as the main protagonist in the story mode, where they have to gather a team of Sonic and Animal Crossing characters in order to defeat Redd and Doctor Eggman and save the Olympics.
