The Ultra Beasts (Japanese: ウルトラビースト Ultra Beast) are a group of extradimensional Pokémon originating from a dimension known as Ultra Space. They are unbelievably powerful and dangerous, albeit not of intentional maliciousness. They are hostile to Pokémon and regular humans who have entered through Ultra Wormholes, as the energy remaining on them is mistaken by the Ultra Beasts as a possible route back to their own dimension.
They all debuted in Generation 7. The Alola Pokédex in those games highlights Ultra Beasts with a green background. It also uses this background for Type: Null and Silvally, obviously implying a relation. Cosmog and its evolutions as well as Necrozma also have some Ultra Beast-like properties despite being classified as a "regular" Legendary Pokémon (and thus getting the gold background in the Alola Pokédex).
Sun and Moon introduced the following seven Ultra Beasts:
- Nihilego (codenamed UB-01 Symbiont)
- Buzzwole (codenamed UB-02 Absorption)
- Pheromosa (codenamed UB-02 Beauty)
- Xurkitree (codenamed UB-03 Lighting)
- Celesteela (codenamed UB-04 Blaster)
- Kartana (codenamed UB-04 Blade)
- Guzzlord (codenamed UB-05 Glutton)
The following extra Ultra Beasts were added in Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon:
- Poipole, "UB Adhesive", unusual for the fact that it evolves into Naganadel, "UB Stinger"
- Stakataka, "UB Assembly"
- Blacephalon, "UB Burst"
The Ultra Beasts are also available in Generation 8 by way of the Crown Tundra expansion.
There also a number of fanon Ultra Beasts that exist as well. Please add your Ultra Beasts if you see fit.

All Ultra Beasts have Beast Boost as their sole ability. Wild Ultra Beasts receive a stat increase at the start of the battle like Totem Pokémon. All Poké Balls except the Master Ball and Beast Ball have a catch rate multiplier of 1× against Ultra Beasts; the Beast Ball, pictured at left and not to be confused with the Beastball, has a catch rate multiplier of 5× for Ultra Beasts, whereas this multiplier is 0.1× for all other Pokémon. Ultra Beasts are part of the Undiscovered Egg Group (thus cannot be bred), are all genderless, and are guaranteed to have at least three IVs of 31.
Unlike regular Pokémon, the Pokédex will not register Ultra Beasts until they are captured. If the Ultra Beast is not in the Pokédex, its name will show as ??? in battle.
Canon history[]
According to Alolan legend, the Ultra Beasts appeared from an Ultra Wormhole and fought the guardian deities in the past. Years prior to the events of Pokémon Sun and Moon, Professor Mohn discovered both Ultra Wormholes and the Ultra Beasts. The Aether Foundation conducted research on the Ultra Beasts, including the development of a Pokémon, Type: Null, intended to kill them. They also developed the Beast Ball to catch the Ultra Beasts, as other Poké Balls cannot properly recognize the Ultra Beasts. They also hypothesized that Cosmog is an Ultra Beast from Ultra Space, due to its ability to create Ultra Wormholes.
The International Police has given each of the Ultra Beasts code names, and intends to destroy them to protect the Pokémon world. However, Anabel and Looker task the player with catching the Ultra Beasts to protect them instead. The International Police has found that the Ultra Beasts are surrounded by the same energy found in Totem Pokémon, an aura known as Beast Boost that comes from the Ultra Wormhole. Although Necrozma's Pokédex entry states that it is "reminiscent of the Ultra Beasts", the International Police have not identified it as one and Beast Balls do not have an increased chance of catching it.
Appearances[]
Pokémon Sun and Moon[]
Ultra Beasts first appeared in Pokémon Sun and Moon. During the main story, the player encounters Nihilego at Aether Paradise during their first meeting with Aether President Lusamine, when it emerges from a spontaneously appearing Ultra Wormhole. During the player's confrontation with Lusamine after she captures Nebby, Lusamine uses Nebby's power to open Ultra Wormholes across the Alola region, bringing Ultra Beasts into the region; Nihilego is seen emerging from the portal near Lusamine, while Buzzwole/Pheromosa is seen emerging from a portal over Melemele Island and battling Tapu Koko.
After entering the Hall of Fame, the Ultra Beasts can be found across Alola. If a wild Ultra Beast is defeated in battle, it can still be encountered again in the same area and fought again. The player must catch all of the Ultra Beasts in an area in order to continue with the post-game plot and make the next species of Ultra Beast available. When an Ultra Beast is in the area, the music changes until they are all captured.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon[]
During the story, the player encounters Poipole as the main Pokémon used by the Ultra Recon Squad member Dulse/Soliera. Like in Pokémon Sun and Moon, Nihilego appears at Aether Paradise after meeting with Lusamine. During the player's confrontation with Dusk Mane/Dawn Wings Necrozma, it proceeds to open multiple Ultra Wormholes all across Alola, unleashing Ultra Beasts into Alola. Blacephalon/Stakataka appears on Mahalo Trail, facing against Hala, Hau, and Tapu Koko. Additionally, Olivia encounters Buzzwole/Pheromosa at the Ruins of Life, Nanu encounters Guzzlord at the Ruins of Abundance, and Hapu encounters Xurkitree at the Ruins of Hope.
The first seven Ultra Beasts can be reached in white Ultra Wormholes in the Ultra Warp Ride. Nihilego can be found in Ultra Deep Sea, Buzzwole in Ultra Jungle, Pheromosa in Ultra Desert, Xurkitree in Ultra Plant, Celesteela in Ultra Crater, Kartana in Ultra Forest, and Guzzlord in Ultra Ruin. They can be caught once per visit. After defeating Necrozma at Megalo Tower, the Ultra Recon Squad offers Poipole to the player, and after the player becomes the Champion, the player can catch two Blacephalon/Stakataka at Poni Grove.
Unlike regular Pokémon, the Pokédex will not normally record Ultra Beasts as seen; it will only register them when they are caught. If a wild Ultra Beast is not in the Pokédex, its name will show as ??? in battle. However, Ultra Beasts used by other Trainers will display their names in battle and register in the Pokédex; specifically, this occurs for the Poipole used by the Ultra Recon Squad and the Kartana used by the Ultra Forest Kartenvoy. Additionally, the wild Blacephalon/Stakataka encountered in Poni Grove do display their names and are registered in the Pokédex as seen even before the player catches them.
Pokémon Sword and Shield[]
In The Crown Tundra, the Ultra Beasts, excluding Poipole and Naganadel, can be found in Dynamax Adventures after finding the fourth Legendary Clue. Like the Legendary Pokémon found in the Max Lair, only one of each Ultra Beast species can be caught. Poipole can be obtained as a gift after completing five successful Dynamax Adventures after unlocking They Came From The Ultra Beyond!.
Fanon Appearances[]
Pokkén Tournament 2[]
Nihilego and Pheromosa appear as prominent Pokémon in Pokkén Tournament 2.
Nihilego is a Support Pokémon, and is partnered with Tapu Koko as an Attack-based Support. Nihilego will attack its opponent with Venoshock, which covers an area with poison. Upon stepping within the area, the opponent will be attacked by spikes of poison that will raise from the ground.
Pheromosa on the other hand is a Fighter Pokémon, though was added after the game's initial launch. Pheromosa is a Speed-based Fighter Pokémon, with very quick and powerful close-combat attacks. Much like Shadow Mewtwo, Pheromosa is a glass cannon with only 480 HP.
Pokémon Anima[]
The Ultra Beasts reappear in Pokémon Anima, though are not plot-important until the post-game, unlike their original appearance in Pokémon Sun and Moon. The post-game episode themed around them, titled The Ultra Offensive, is said to delve deeper into the biology of the Ultra Beasts.
While all canonical Ultra Beasts reappear in this game, they are joined by many new ones, who are to be revealed at a later date.
Pokémon Progress and Regress []
The Ultra Beasts also appears in Pokémon Progress and Regress, albeit the original seven are only seen, fought and captured in the post-game, while a group of truly malicious Ultra Beasts are introduced; the Outlandish Ultra Beasts. They take a major part of the main story plot as a third camp against the player and the Team Pause.
Unlike the regular Ultra Beasts, the Outlandish always has two Types, as well as possessing a different Ability; the Outlandish Pride, which allow them to absorb its knocked out victim's highest stat other than HP by one stage. The only resemblance is their same base stat total of 570, with the exception of UB-0J Cuteness, which despite its appearence, is the strongest and the most dangerous of the Outlandish Ultra Beasts, with a BST of 680.
It is said that the Outlandish Ultra Beasts are so malicious and sadistic that even the regular Ultra Beasts had to stop them at all cost, otherwise they will be their next victims.
A famous glitch Pokémon called Missingno. had become a regular Ultra Beast, but with a different Ability called Glitch Field, in which transform almost all existing mechanic to work like in Generation 1 (Red, Blue and Yellow versions), and last as long as Missingno. stays in the battle. It is code-named as UB-00 Mystery. It is also Normal/Bird-type, which the latter one works the same as in the Generation 1 Pokémon games; it does nothing as it is not strong nor weak against any Types, and instead serves as a nod to the original Missingno.'s typing in Generation 1.
Pokemon Stardust Version and Pokemon Comet Version[]
Ultra Beasts can be summoned after beating the game using the UB Attractor. Each UB obtained by this method will be at Level 5. Possible UBs that can be acquired with this system are below...
- Nihilego: Summon with 1 Poison Gem and 1 Rock Gem
- Buzzwole: Summon with 1 Bug Gem and 1 Fighting Gem (only available during the day)
- Pheromosa: Summon with 1 Bug Gem and 1 Fighting Gem (only available at night)
- Xurkitree: Summon with 2 Electric Gems
- Kartana: Summon with 1 Grass Gem and 1 Steel Gem (only available during the day)
- Celesteela: Summon with 1 Flying Gem and 1 Steel Gem (only available at night)
- Guzzlord: Summon with 1 Dark Gem and 1 Dragon Gem
Also in this game are Giga Beasts, Ultra Beast-like creatures who resided in the past prior to being brought into the present day by Team Time to wreak havoc on Suisei. There are six Giga Beasts, as shown below...
- Mysterumira (GB-01 Mysterious)
- Mosquisland (GB-02 Vermin)
- Jestalight (GB-03 Energy)
- Jurashark (GB-04 Consumption)
- Mixtaplite (GB-05 Parasitic)
- Shardness (GB-06 Crystalline)
Despite being at least somewhat different from Ultra Beasts, Giga Beasts have the same stat totals as the Ultra Beasts and share a Beast Boost ability. Instead of being obtainable through post-game missions, however, they freely roam the game's islands after beating the game.
When encountered in the wild, Giga Beasts are at Level 58. In the re-release, wild Giga Beasts get their most prominent stat (or, in Shardness' case, all stats) raised by two (one in Shardness' case) stages at the start of the fight. Giga Beasts are classified as Beasts and therefore easy to catch with Beast Balls.
St. Clair Publications[]
- In Tropes vs. Women in Pokémon Training, all canon Pokémon are available to catch, including the Ultra Beasts, although like all Generation 7 Pokémon, they are unavailable in the original version of the game due to its 2015 release. The Ultra Beasts are found exclusively at the Red Ridge Parkway. Regular Poké-Balls actually work on them in this game; however, Beast Balls can still be obtained and still work best on them, with a 10× catch rate.
- In Super Smash Stadium, Nihilego and Silvally appear as Poké-Ball Pokémon. They can come out of Master Balls despite not technically being Legendary/Mythical Pokémon.
