Description[]

Your Friends. Your World. Your Story.

Experience life on your own unique island in Tomodachi Life Switch – the vibrant sequel to the beloved life simulation game, but on Nintendo Switch! Live out a world of endless possibilities where your Mii characters can interact, grow, and surprise you every day.

Just as in the original game, you create a population of Miis – representing you, your friends, family, custom characters or anyone you choose. Customize each Mii's appearance, voice, and personality, and watch as they develop relationships, partake in activities, and carve out their own slice of life on your island. But Tomodachi Life Switch takes the personalization to a whole new level, allowing you to assign nationalities and religions to your Miis, influencing their traditions, language, and celebrations. The game proudly embraces diversity with the inclusion of LGBTQ+ relationships, ensuring all players feel represented.

Everyday life is more authentic than ever. The revamped illness system introduces allergies and common health issues, while a new island weather system brings variable conditions that influence your Miis' daily lives and activities. Your Miis can now pursue careers and part-time jobs, attend school, and even become pet owners, deepening their interactions and experiences. The new education system allows Miis to learn and grow, affecting their career paths and personal development.

Your island is your canvas in Tomodachi Life Switch. Choose your island's climate, layout, and watch as it shapes your island's flora, fauna, and weather patterns. Place buildings and establish developments to enhance your community and provide new activities for your Miis. Watch as your island evolves over time, with buildings taking time to construct and natural landscapes that change with the seasons. Don't forget to experience the fun with others through local and online multiplayer modes. Visit your friends' islands, meet their unique Miis, and take part in cooperative activities.

In "Tomodachi Life Switch", every choice shapes your unique world and narrative. Embrace the joy of living in a community where unexpected surprises wait around every corner, and every Mii has a story to tell. Your friends, your world, your story - Welcome to Tomodachi Life Switch!

Gameplay[]

New features[]

  • Multiplayer: Players from all around the world can visit other islands and interact with their Miis and participate in their island events, and more. Players can purchase their export item (which is expensive) so that it's available at their own. They can also send their travelers to other islands via an invitation from another player. Additionally, players can trade Miis between other players to their islands. This replaces the SpotPass and StreetPass system, as it's omitted in Nintendo Switch. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required to use online interactivity features.
  • Full pets: No longer as a rent-a-cat/dog coupon - Miis can now be given pets to take care of, that will remain with them for a few in-game years. They can own either at least one dog, cat, bird or rodent. Miis can be seen feeding them, petting them, and doing all the things they need to clean up after them.
  • LGBTQ+ relationships: The game now supports diverse relationship types, allowing you to define your Miis' sexual orientations. This step towards better representation ensures that every player can feel represented in their Miis' relationships. This feature is turned off by default, but can be changed in the settings to the player’s liking. The player can set a Mii's sexuality via the Mii Maker, where they can be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or acesexual. They may also experience no romantic attraction to anybody whatsoever, and choose to be aromantic. Miis can also be transgender or non-binary. In the Mii Maker, a Mii can be referred to as a he, she, they or custom pronouns.
  • Illnesses: The new illness system introduces a variety of realistic ailments that Miis can experience, from colds to chickenpox, ear infections, and more. Allergies are also a new feature, and Miis might find themselves allergic to certain foods or pets. Miis show symptoms of their illness or allergy, and you can take them to the hospital (a new building type) for treatment. Physical injuries are also possible, adding another layer of depth and care to the gameplay.
  • Island weather: The island weather system introduces a variety of weather conditions that influence the daily activities of your Miis. Rain might keep your Miis indoors, sunny weather might see them flocking to the beach, and snowy weather might inspire them to have snowball fights or keep warm inside.

Miis[]

The Mii Maker has been optimized to make it a much more flexible and improved customization tool. In a similar way to how Miis can be edited outside of regular gameplay, Miis can be used as regular residents that live in the Mii Apartments, or they can be townies (originally named as townies from the Sims series) which do not live in the apartments, and instead act as background characters, venue visitors and shop owners.

Appearance[]

Makeup Tool[]

The Makeup Counter makes a comeback from the Nintendo Switch edition of Miitopia, with endless customization options to create each Mii unique. However, makeup does not apply towards baby genetics.

Details[]

Names[]

Nicknames can now go up to 16 characters long, unlike the Nintendo Switch default of 10. Each Mii must be given a first and last name, as well as a nickname that will be shown in most places. The player can also change how it will be pronounced.

Names can also be randomly generated. The player can randomize a Mii's first name or surname individually, and the list of names depends on the Mii's nationality (which is explained later). If no nationality is set, the randomized names use names from the United States. The list of possible names can be seen in the subpage Tomodachi Life Switch/Nationalities.

Relationship[]

You can choose from a bigger variety of relationships of a certain Mii towards the real you. If they are not related or as a friend, they can fall in love, and/or marry your look-alike, unless if you change it to something else. The list has been expanded, as follows:

  • Mother/father/parent
  • Grandmother/grandfather/grandparent
  • Stepmother/stepfather/step-parent
  • Daughter/son/child
  • Granddaughter/grandson/grandchild
  • Niece/nephew/nibling
  • Sibling
  • Cousin
  • Friend
  • Not related
Nationality[]

Due to the big size of the table, it's moved to a new subpage. Go to this page: Tomodachi Life Switch/Nationalities.

The player can set a Mii's nationality. They can choose from a real-world country (as of 2022), a game-series, or none. A Mii with a certain nationality will do certain activities, games and social life. They will also prefer certain foods from their country more than international cuisines. A national day marks as an important day for somebody. Miis wave their flag on their National Day. If they don't have a nation, they fly a flag of the island on the day of the year that the island was started.

Religion[]

Miis can also have a religion. Each Mii can be assigned a religion of your choosing, representing a wide array of real-world faiths. Depending on their religion, Miis can be observed engaging in practices and rituals at specific times of day. These moments may be shared in solitude, or in the company of friends, family, or relatives, reflecting the diverse ways in which faith intersects with daily life.

Religion can be deeply significant to some Miis, serving as a cherished aspect of their identity. For others, it's an integral part of their lifestyle, shaping their routines and behaviors. Each religion in the game comes with its unique set of dietary laws, mirroring real-world practices. If a Mii is offered food that denies their religious principles, they'll politely refuse, explaining that it goes against their faith.

Personality[]

In Tomodachi Life Switch, personalities are the unique characteristics and traits that define each Mii. These attributes come to life in the Mii's interactions, relationships, reactions, and overall behavior in the game. A Mii's personality is the heart of their identity, shaping their story. The core component in determining a Mii's personality is a quiz featured in the Mii Maker, which is the final step in the Mii-making process.

Despite this, a Mii's personality isn't set in stone. It can be edited and tweaked at any time. This allows for dynamic character growth and change, mirroring the complexities of real-life personalities.

The personalities in Tomodachi Life Switch don't just determine the Mii's individual behaviors but also influence their relationships with other Miis. Certain personality types may be more compatible than others, leading to strong friendships, romances, or perhaps even rivalries.

Two new overarching categories debut in Tomodachi Life Switch: Compassionate and Innovative, to join the existing four categories from previous installments.

Islands[]

There are 7 different islands to choose from, complete with its own set of events and values.

  • Archipleigo: The legacy island, used in the first two games, consisting of one main island, and another Leisure Island, connected by a bridge. The same events from earlier games are used here.
  • Tropical: Complete with a popular, sunny beach and tropical rainforest, the tropical island is perfect for surfing and sandcastle competitions.
  • Arid: Not much rain falls here, but this drier, sunnier island has a beautiful oasis and camel trips across the island on offer to experience a desert life.
  • Volcano: A volcano can be seen offshore, at the waters behind the island. There is a very small chance it could erupt, but it's not all bad - it's worth taking a trip there.
  • Mediterranean: A hilly, Greek-inspired island with tall mountains at the back of the island, with apartments situated at the footsteps of the hills. It's great to go mountain climbing or fishing here.
  • Oriental: A rather flat, Japanese-inspired island. With traditional architecture fusing with new styles of the modern day, the Japanese environment is timeless and enchanting. An onsen bathhouse replaces the spa.
  • Snowy: A northern island, with colder temperatures and snow falling for more of the year. Ice skating and snowball fights are perfect to do any time of the year.

Buildings[]

In all islands[]

  • Mii Apartments: This is where your Mii islanders live. Unlike the previous game, Miis can now do more inside of their apartments. Furniture can be placed inside buildings, and the walls and floors can be changed. However, Mii Apartments have a set floor plan, and are just a square room. Kitchen and bathroom equipment cannot be placed into apartments, as Miis head down to the café or the restaurant to eat, and they use the public bathroom in the apartments. Once the current apartment is maxed out, the apartments need money spent from the player to increase the amount of rooms, and the apartment has three upgrades after the original. Each Mii Apartment block houses a total of 150 Miis, but when an apartment is maxed out, the player will need to purchase another, since the newest one isn't capable of going higher. Purchasing the next apartment is very expensive, but once purchased, the next apartment can house another 150 new Miis to move in. An island can hold up to 3 apartment blocks at one time, but each apartment can be individually customized instead of set appearances used after each upgrade.
  • Mii Homes: This is where responsible singles and married couples can settle down in a cozy home. Similar to the apartments, Mii Homes now have full customization besides furniture, with the ability to change the walls, floors, everything, including the floor plan. You can see through the whole house in every room in the home, and the bath makes a return. In the Japanese version, if the house is owned by a couple, they can be seen bathing together.
  • Town Hall: This is where the player can add new Miis, check out their catalogue of foods, furniture, clothing, etc., check their list of grown children and more.
  • Beach: A lovely beach for seaside strolls and enjoying the water.
  • Fountain: This plaza's fountain is a great place to relax.
  • Park: The park is a great place for a stroll in any season.
  • Amusement Park: This fun-filled place is open 24 hours a day!
  • Café: A small café, perfect for taking a cup of coffee or a chat.
  • Photo Studio: Take stylish pictures of your islanders here!
  • Compatibility Tester: This high-tech device tests how well your islanders get along!
  • Concert Hall: Enjoy live performances from your islanders at this music venue!
  • Rankings Board: Compare islander rankings here. The information changes all the time!
  • NEW: Hospital: This is a place where injured Miis get better, or where the player can purchase prescriptions for medicine at the Pharmacy via the ground floor.
  • NEW: Mii TV: Replaces Mii News. Now has a set schedule, with Mii News every 7 AM and 7 PM every day. News is now much more realistic and not unusual, fitting in with the latest happenings on the island.
  • NEW: Pool: Have a swim in the public pool, chat with friends, and take a cool drink or two.
  • NEW: Movie Theatre: Watch movies with your Miis, and see what you can make with them! Players will often get movie tickets as a gift for helping out with their problems. They can do this to take them to the movie theatre and watch a movie. Using two tickets will give the player the ability to create one unique movie, by using the island's Miis to fill in for the cast, backgrounds, cameras and much more. Movies can be edited with different scenes, such as using tons of animations, changing the dialogue, adding backgrounds, scenes and music to create the movie the player wants. The player can choose from a variety of genres, such as family, action, romance, horror, adventure, etc.
  • NEW: Spa: Wash all your worries away at this laid-back spa. This is a destination venue where Miis can be seen in the sauna, doing some yoga, mediating, getting a massage and more. The player can offer a massage here to a Mii if they ask via a problem.
  • NEW: Restaurant: A fancy restaurant perfect for that date with the special someone, or a nice meal. No longer a hidden place on the map, the player can see Miis dining out here with friends, family, or their lover. They may also stop by themselves. The player can also take Miis with them, and pay for their meal. Eating here fills up a Mii's hunger.
  • NEW: Mall: Your one-stop shopping center for all things you need, from food, to clothing and furniture!
    • Supermarket: This is where the player can purchase food for their Miis, as well as ingredients for the player to cook their own meals for Miis. Food is now rendered in full 3D, with proper food animations when eaten (e.g, the plate doesn't get smaller when the food's ate).
    • Clothing Shop: Now merged with the Hats shop. This is where the player can purchase a wide variety of clothing, now divided into shirts, pants, shoes, hats, accessories and more, for the player to make their own clothing combinations on Miis, or choose a pre-set combination of clothing in the store.
    • Pawn Shop: Sell the items you don't need, or head on over and purchase gifts for your Miis.
    • NEW: Furniture Shop: An overhaul of the Interiors shoppe - now in a whole new light. Players can purchase furniture for apartments and homes that Miis can interact with (for example, sit down on, wash hands, etc.) The shop sells a whole range of furniture, such as chairs, TVs, beds, tables, stoves and more, that refreshes every day - once purchased, it's always available from then on.

Relationships[]

Relationships are improved to be much more immersive and personalized to the user's experience. There are several categories that relationships fall into:

  • Acquaintances: Acquaintances are a new relationship that are when two Miis have only just met, and are yet to know more about them. They can become friends via more socialization and outings. Other people, such as co-workers and classmates, fall into this category.
  • Friends: Friends are people that Miis know well and enjoy to be around and do different activities with them. This is the most common category of relationships, and there is no limit to how many someone can have.
  • Best Friend: A Mii can only have one best friend at a time - the person they trust the most, like the most, basically someone that will always be with them.
  • Enemy: Miis can now have enemies, people that are considered rivalries and disliked people. Rivaries tend to start when a fight takes place between two Miis, regardless of their current status in their relationship.
  • Dating: A Mii can have feelings for another Mii, and the player can let them confess their feelings, or let that go and not let them confess. If successful, the two will become start dating (also known as boyfriends/girlfriends). If the player wants to experience more accurate and realistic romance between Miis, they can turn this on in the settings, but it's limited to people 13 years and over. This will include flirting and kissing.
  • Spouse: If the relationship between two daters gets high enough, one Mii can propose and get married. If successful, the two will plan their wedding, taking 8-12 hours. The player can assist in the planning, paying $250, which will finalize their wedding and start it immediately. If one of them go into a lower relationship status, one of them can call off the wedding (before or during the ceremony), or break up altogether. If one or more of the lovers are younger than 18 years old, an Age-o-Matic will need to be used on them, or they cannot get married untl they become 18 years old. When they divorce, the Age-o-Matic will wear off.
  • Ex-Lover: If a Mii has lost their feelings towards their lover, they can decide to divorce, or try to make the relationship between them work again. If they do divorce, both of them will become sad. A divorce can also happen in other gameplay areas, such as in a public area. The two can be seen with eachother, with one of them thanking for the memories they had, the other thanking in return, and a text box says, '[Mii 1] and [Mii 2] are back to being just friends.' Neither of them will gain sadness in this scenario, however.
  • Family and Siblings: These are familial relationships that include parents, siblings, nieces/nephews, aunts/uncles, grandparents and cousins.

Other new features[]

Vacations[]

Vacations are greatly improved in Tomodachi Life Switch. Now, the player can plan vacations for certain Miis to go on. They can choose the country (or more) of their choice, and the number of destinations. The destinations are randomly chosen, but they will always make every vacation even more unique from the last. Visiting Miis are seen travelling on a plane to their destination at the start screen, but instead, the player can see inside and see what they are talking about (before and after the trip, such as what they liked about their trip on their way back to the island). Vacations greatly improve relationships, but are fairly expensive - the cost is determined by the country the Miis are going to visit. However, the player can collect travel tickets from Miis that level up, which allows the player to plan a vacation for free.

Achievements[]

Achievements are a new feature in Tomodachi Life Switch. Completing the requirements for an achievement give the player some money, or in some cases, a new food, clothing item or furniture item.
