The Luminary is the main protagonist of Dragon Quest XI. He is an eighteen year-old boy who hails from the village of Cobblestone within the kingdom of Erdrea. The hero chosen by the World Tree, Yggdrasil, the Luminary is a reincarnation of Erdwin, the original hero to have held the same title. As with all protagonists of the Dragon Quest series, the character's name is chosen by the player; "Luminary" is instead only a title.
Though originally unbeknownst to him, The Luminary is the son of the ruler of Dundrasil, King Irwin. Upon his birth, the king sent his son away to the town of Cobblestone in order to protect him. Due to possessing the Mark of Light on his hand, rulers of neighbouring regions claimed that The Luminary's birth foretold the return of the Lord of Shadows and wished to kill him to prevent such.
Physical Appearance[]
The Luminary possesses blue eyes and short brown hair that reaches only slightly past his chin. His only other notable physical trait is the strange mark present on his left hand; the so-called Mark of Light consists of a spikes U shape with a cross hovering above it. The mark on his hand appears to glow when in danger.
While The Luminary's clothing can be changed by equipping different armour sets, his most well-known attire is that which he is shown wearing at the beginning of Dragon Quest XI. The Luminary wears a black long-sleeved shirt underneath a long purple tunic. Around his shoulders and across his chest is a brown leather patch that seems to be thicker than the rest of his tunic. The Luminary also wears tan pants that are tucked into light green boots that possess purple outsoles. Around his waist he wears a brown belt with a tan bag attached to it, and a brown strap held together with metal clasps cross around his chest. The Luminary wears his sword sheathed across his back.
Personality[]
As a character intended to serve as a stand-in for the player, The Luminary possesses little personality for themselves and most of the characteristics he does display are determined by the player's dialogue choices. Perhaps his most notable personality traits are those that make him stand out from other Dragon Quest protagonists: instead of being bold and overly courageous individuals willing to throw himself into dangerous situations with little thought, The Luminary initially appears to be more reserved who is somewhat insecure and easily manipulated by his faults. Additionally, because of his sheltered upbringing, he is unsure of his place in the world and seems somewhat hesitant at the thought of having to live up to the expectations of him as the one chosen by Yggdrasil.
The Luminary is shown to be good friends with Gemma, a girl born in Cobblestone on the same day as him. Gemma and The Luminary are described as childhood friends, and she seems to be one of the few characters that The Luminary is willing to express his true feelings and thoughts to.
