Chapter 1: Knock-Knock

Written by Dk64rules (tbc)

Gleaming and pleasantly warm, rays of mid-afternoon sunlight beamed into the cozy living room of a modest apartment, resting its shimmery yellows upon a cacophanous sight of hastily shifted furniture, cardboard boxes, and the figure of a teenage boy walking back-and-forth between the room and another, carrying a lot in his hands each way, each trip.

"Alright, and this can go here..." Box down. "This should be over there." The dragging of a nightstand table. "No, wait—!" The dragging of it back. All the while, his rather vibrant red shirt, blue slacks, and golden hair reflected brightly amidst the large window panels' heavy drinking of light. "Whew..." The self-taught mover-decorator wiped his brow of collecting sweat.

*♫ ring, ring ♫*

A pattern of machine vibrations accompanied by a fast-paced video game soundtrack suddenly rang out from the boy's pocket. Stopping in his crusade, he procured his cell phone from within the compartment and answered it.

"Hi Sixty." The voice on the other end, soft and middle-pitched, introduced simply.

"Yo," Sixty casually replied, contrasting the caller's voice with a confident lift, "What time you gettin' in?"

"Oh, yeah, well, that's actually the thing," The voice continued, "My train ride's been delayed to tomorrow."

"Ah damn, that sucks. Are you all right?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'll be fine. I just didn't want you to get too caught up in everything being ready by tonight."

"He says as if I didn't already make a complete mess doing just that." Sixty quipped, prompting a slight chuckle. "Anyway, it's all good. Just let me know tomorrow when I should come get ya."

"Okay. See you then."

"See ya, Eight."

Sixty hangs up the phone, and immediately flops down in the sun on the floor.

"Guess that means my work here is done..."

*knock knock knock*

"NgaAH!" Sixty is violently startled awake by sudden loud knocking at the apartment's front door. The floor-to-ceiling panels that once grabbed up the essence of the sun are now calmly displaying the cool blues and oranges of an approaching sunset; that was a long nap.

"Who even knows I live here already...?" The boy was convinced that anyone knocking at this hour was looking specfically for him. Walking towards the door, he could see the invitingly empty kitchen and was reminded of the frozen pizza he'd go to stick in the oven after...whatever this is.

Finished fumbling with the lock, Sixty gently pulled the door back. "Hello—?"

A young girl, about Sixty's age, stood in the hallway before him. She was petite and slim—well, at least she gave off that appearance. In reality, at least height-wise, she was taller than the boy. But then again, Sixty wasn't really much of a tree to begin with.

"Can I stay here with you?" Her cyan-tinted eyes, contrast to her long reddish-brown hair, stared directly at Sixty.

"U-Uhhh..." Sixty couldn't speak words fast enough to convey the thoughts in his head. In fact, it wasn't even that he couldn't utter them fast enough, it was more like the thoughts weren't coming through as anything that would be verbally intelligible.

"What the hell is this?" He thought, not out of annoyance, but of nervous excited disbelief, "Who is this? Should I let her in? Or not? I mean, she's cute, but...what's her deal?"

Sixty must have been thinking too long, because he didn't even notice that the girl had shifted her focus slightly to the right of him, eyeing the haphazardly-askew couch in the middle of the living room floor.

"Ooh!" The girl exclaimed, barely registering that she bumped into the boy in front of her as she dashed past, into the apartment. Sixty could only look on as his brain tried to comprehend why this teenage girl he's known for all of two minutes has kicked off her shoes and started bouncing up and down on the couch in his living room.

"Sorry," The girl began, still jumping, "It just looked like it'd be real bouncy!" At that, she let herself fall from the height of her last jump, plopping down on her back on the plushy cushions.

"Okaaaaaay..." As if he wasn't confused already.

"Um, right, so why exactly do you want to stay here?" Sixty forwent bothering about trying to get her to leave, probably for the best.

"Because," The girl started, "I'm looking for a new place." Now that Sixty could really register, the girl's voice was very pleasant, a kind of "down-to-earth" vibe, though it also sounded a touch anxious. "I don't really wanna go back to where I was."

Sixty paused a moment, before asking, "And I'm guessing you're not going to talk about it more than that?"

"I don't really want to...is that alright?" Her quieter, polite tone was an unbelievably complete shift from her energy moments ago.

"Hmmm..." The teenage boy pondered, "It's not like I want to turn her away, and I did almost finish setting up all that stuff for Eight...surely we can work this out when he gets here too..."

After a surprisingly tense moment of silence, Sixty smiled, "Yeah, that's cool. You can stay as long as you need!"

"Yeaaaaah!! Woooo!" Upon hearing this, the girl leapt off of the couch and ran over to the boy, embracing him in a tight hug, "You're amazing!"

"It's no prob—oh, shit, my bad," Sixty stopped, "I've never got your name."

"Amy!" The girl replied, giggling as she released her captive.

"Nice to meet ya!"
