Development

The game had started development after Paul McCartney interviewing upon composing a song for the release of Destiny in 2014 that "It was pretty special. If something [another game] just as intriguing came up, I’d give it a go. Who knows?", triggering a brainwave in Apple Corps. CEO Jeff Jones who oversaw development of The Beatles: Rock Band. EA were cautious upon the idea due to the "dissapointing" sales of The Beatles: Rock Band, but were spurred on by the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison as well as Ringo Starr voicing his approval over Twitter.

The idea to the small development team came about when searching Beatles songs on YouTube and stumbling across ThatGamer's [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEE04A4B1C4C9EBEC 8-Bit Beatles series]. Where comments suggested ideas for a NES-style Beatles 2D platformer. Encouraged by the idea, the team offered for the videos to be taken off YouTube for the games reveal in return for being hired as "Composing Consultant" for a games official soundtrack in a similar vein to the series.

The game was revealed at E3 2016 on EA's press conference with a surprise trailer reveal by Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney. The trailer consisted of explaining the games concept showing off close-up teaser gameplay. Only for Paul and Ringo to go off-stage due to 'technical difficulties', on comes a live playtest by sons of Beatles Dhani Harrison, Sean Lennon, James McCartney and Zak Starkey of the games first level 'Please, Please Me'. The four would provide commentary and add additional details about the game, ending with EA CEO Andrew Wilson announcing the games release just before next E3 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper for 5 platforms to rapturous applause.
