Saffron is a nineteen-year-old military scientist who once worked to design experimental spells. Many of her spells were deemed too dangerous to ever be used, and were locked away. At the end of the war she was developing weapons for, however, the Calamity spells mysteriously vanished. Saffron set out into the monster-infested wastes to recover them, with each step in her search taking her closer and closer to the mysterious walled-off land known as Eden...
Just like how One Step From Eden was heavily inspired by Mega Man: Battle Network's gameplay, Saffron's fighting style in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is partially inspired by Mega Man in many ways. Both utilize a wildly varied assortment of projectiles based on the various attacks they can obtain in their home series. While Mega Man is limited in scope by the size of his moveset, however, Saffron goes above and beyond by coming into fights with a Deck of spells which she can unleash with reckless abandon at the cost of MP. In other words, she's more like a fusion of Mega Man and Hero. When it comes to long-range combat, Saffron may excel, but her light weight and slow fall speed makes her easy to combo when enemies get close.
She has a number of other properties unique to her as well. Her Smash Attacks don't gain nearly as much power as others' when charged, but instead become capable of hitting enemies much further away than normal. Once per stock, she can use her Up Special while in hitstun. Some of her attacks - particularly Deck Spells - grant her stacks of Trinity, indicated by triangle icons floating near her body, which can be spent once she has three of them to grant special properties to those moves.
Of course, Saffron isn't the only one on the road to Eden. And though One Step From Eden's other playable characters are a bit preoccupied, Saffron's alternate costumes has her borrowing more than just their color palettes; she'll mimic their fashion styles entirely. It's a shame that Selicy herself isn't playable, but being able to wear her hoodie is still rather nice.
Fighter Ability: Deck & MP[]
Located close to Saffron's HUD is her Deck - a supply of spells separate from the ones in her moveset - and her MP Gauge, which can contain up to 3 MP and slowly recharges over time. At any given moment, she can see both her current spell and the next spell she'll be able to use. By using her Neutral or Side Special, Saffron is able to cast her current Deck Spell at the cost of some MP.
By pressing the Special button while shielding, Saffron can Shuffle her deck. This prevents her from using Deck Spells for about a second, but replaces her currently drawn spell with a new one. The more Shuffle is used, the longer each Shuffle will take.
Moveset[]
Normal Moves[]
Neutral Attack
Field Bracer Saffron fires up to three quick shots from the device on her left arm. This move is functionally similar to Mega Man's jab, and boasts the same incredibly high projectile priority but low knockback. |
Forward Tilt
Field Bracer Saffron fires up to three quick shots from the device on her left arm while moving forwards. Again, this move is functionally similar to Mega Man's forward tilt. You can even jump while firing shots to fire the remaining ones in midair, effectively giving Saffron an extra aerial attack. |
Up Tilt
Whirl Saffron conjures a tornado above her head. Holding the attack button causes her to fire the tornado upwards, extending the length of the attack animation while turning it into a projectile attack. |
Down Tilt
Wreath Saffron conjures magical vines from the ground. These vines lash upwards, and boast a surprising amount of vertical reach. Hitting an enemy with the very tips of the vines will drag them to the ground and root them in place for about a second. |
Dash Attack
Step Pierce Saffron thrusts one arm forward, encasing it in a spike-shaped magical aura. This move is surprisingly effective against shielding enemies, capable of destroying them instantly, but its predictability holds it back a little on that front. |
Forward Smash
Bow Snipe Saffron manifests a bow made of magical energy and uses it to fire an ethereal bolt directly forwards. It's especially nice to have in fights with more people since it pierces through enemies' bodies, letting you hit multiple targets at once. The more this move is charged for, the faster and farther the arrow will fly. |
Up Smash
Thunder Saffron calls down a thunderbolt to strike the space directly in front of her. It's functionally similar to Bayonetta's Down Smash, driving downward and striking the earth at Saffron's feet, except it knocks enemies upward and trades some of its horizontal reach for even more vertical reach. Charging the move will cause the lightningbolt to strike farther away from Saffron. |
Down Smash
Power Saws Saffron spawns magical sawblades in the ground on either side of her. After spinning in place for a few seconds, the sawblades move away from her, travelling across the ground. The more this move is charged for, the faster and farther the sawblades will move before they despawn. |
Neutral Aerial
Circuit Saffron charges her body with electricity, shocking enemies that touch her multiple times in a row. |
Forward Aerial
Doubletake Saffron draws a kunai in each hand and throws them forwards, one after the other. A straightforward two-hit attack. |
Back Aerial
Tri Shot Saffron fires a spread of three shots behind her with one hand in a wide spread. If she has three stacks of Trinity, she will fire two more volleys of three shots in quick succession. If she doesn't, she'll gain one stack of Trinity if any of the shots hit an enemy, up to a maximum of three. The move is fantastic for farming Trinity stacks for Deck Spells thanks to its wide range, but it doesn't deal much damage at all without spending any Trinity on it. |
Up Aerial
Mana Potion Saffron hurls a potion into the air above her head. The potion is a projectile affected by gravity (though its fall speed is about the same as one of Samus's bombs) that deals a decent amount of damage on impact. If it lands on Saffron's head, though, she instantly regains 1 MP. |
Down Aerial
Firestorm After a short pause to gather her magical energy. Saffron hurls a ball of fire directly underneath her. This projectile travels a bit slowly, but reaches decently far downwards. When firing it off, Saffron possesses a sweetspot directly underneath her that destroys the projectile but can meteor smash enemies. Offstage enemies beware! |
Grab
Pull Saffron conjures a swirl of green magic directly in front of her. Enemies caught in the swirl will be snared in it, rooting them in place. |
Pummel
Wobble Saffron uses a wave of green energy to juggle the enemy first backwards, then back forwards into their original position. This pummel can also hit nearby enemies that Saffron doesn't have grabbed. |
Forward Throw
Flurry Saffron strikes the grabbed enemy multiple times with a barrage of weak jabs, with the last one launching them backwards. |
Back Throw
Monument Saffron skirts behind the enemy while summoning a stack of cubes, then throws her weight against the stack, knocking it down onto the enemy. The cubes dissolve on contact with the ground. |
Up Throw
Upwind Saffron pours more energy into the magic locking the enemy in place, turning it into a magical tornado that hurls the captured foe skywards. |
Down Throw
Guillotine Saffron pushes the enemy onto the ground and conjures a blade made of crimson magic that drops down on them from above. If the enemy is at 150% damage or more, this attack is an instant K.O., but they're still able to escape from the grab even while this throw is in progress. |
Special Moves[]
Neutral Special
Deck Spell Saffron casts her current Deck Spell at the cost of some MP, then cycles to the next Deck Spell in line. |
Side Special
Deck Spell Functionally identical to Saffron's Neutral Special. The only difference is that you can use it on the go. |
Up Special
Second Soul Saffron manifests a pair of magical wings and flaps them once, launching herself in the chosen direction (or directly upwards if no direction is inputted). This move can be used while Saffron is in hitstun to instantly cancel out of it... but only once per stock. |
Down Special
Reflector 1 Saffron surrounds herself with a purple barrier for as long as the Special button is held. This barrier reflects oncoming projectiles, and can damage nearby enemies when it comes out. Functionally, it's similar to the version of Falco's Reflector from Melee, but with one important addition - each use of the move costs 1 MP. |
Shield Special
Shuffle Saffron loses access to her Deck Spells for about 1-2 seconds. After this time has passed, her current Deck Spell is replaced by a random one. |
Final Smash
Wristwatch Saffron overcharges her Field Bracer and casts Time Stop, freezing the stage and all her enemies in time for a few precious seconds. While time is frozen, Saffron's attacks deal slightly increased damage, her MP refills instantly, and Shuffling takes no time at all. |
Deck Spells[]
Blackout
2 The entire screen darkens briefly, and a powerful slash attack attempts to strike each enemy in their current position. Just because it's dark, though, doesn't mean you can't dodge it! |
Boomerang
1 Saffron hurls a magical boomerang directly forwards. It spins forwards a set distance, then turns around and flies backwards. Unlike other boomerang projectiles, it doesn't try to home back in towards Saffron, since it's just a magical conjuration. |
Cryokinesis
2 Saffron conjures than fires a large icicle. She can still move while the icicle is forming, letting her aim it more easily. The enemy struck by this projectile is instantly frozen solid. |
Empower Ring
1 As long as this Deck Spell is at the top of her deck, her attacks deal slightly increased damage. The effects persist for a short time after Empower Ring is cast. |
Excalibur
3 An enormous golden sword drops from the sky and lands at a random point on the stage, skewering any enemies underneath it. If anyone else touches the sword before it despawns, it unleashes a highly powerful area-of-effect attack. |
Explosion!
3 With a wave of her hand, Saffron conjures an enormous multi-hit explosion a short distance in front of her. An unbelievably powerful attack, but Saffron requires time to both charge the attack up and rest afterwards, making it prone to interruption. |
Fimbulveter
3 A chilly wind begins to blow in the direction Saffron is currently facing. While this wind blows, her more powerful attacks have a chance of freezing enemies. Frozen enemies are affected by the wind more than non-frozen ones. |
Fury
3 Saffron dashes forwards, striking enemies in her path one time. This attack deals damage equal to the amount of damage Saffron has taken. |
Glitterstorm
3 Golden streaks of light fall from the sky around Saffron, skewering any unfortunate enemies they land on. Where they land, they release coins that bounce across the ground, dealing additional damage to enemies. |
Infinity Beam
2 Saffron starts firing a long, piercing laser. It rapidly decreases in power and knockback as it continues, eventually getting to the point where it deals no knockback at all, but Saffron can continue to fire it for as long as she wants. The move will only end when she makes another input. |
Innervate
2 By clearing her mind, Saffron increases her Max MP from 3 to 4. When she is K.O.'d, her Max MP immediately reverts back to 3. |
Lifesword
1 Saffron slashes in a wide circle around her with a high-tech sword. This sword is aura-based, meaning it deals increased damage as Saffron takes damage, but each hit also causes Saffron to take a large amount of recoil damage. |
Minnie Gun
1 Saffron begins firing off a volley of twelve shots in the direction she's facing. Each shot is weak and doesn't deal much knockback, but she can move and attack while firing. If she has three stacks of Trinity, she will fire an additional twelve shots. If she doesn't, she'll gain one stack of Trinity as soon as she uses the spell. |
Ragnarok
2 Saffron forms a sword out of crimson magic and hurls it directly forwards. A highly powerful projectile that shatters shields in a single strike. |
Sunshine
3 The battlefield is filled with a warm glow for a short time after this spell is cast. The glow sears opponents, causing them to take rapid chip damage until it fades. |
Miscellaneous[]
On-Screen Appearance
Saffron drops down from the sky, landing in a crouch. As she stands, she throws her labcoat into the air, and slides her arms into the sleeves as it falls onto her. |
Idle Pose (1)
Saffron adjusts one of her gloves by its cuff. |
Idle Pose (2)
Saffron raises her hands to her tie and quickly tightens it. |
Up Taunt
Saffron summons a witch's black hat onto her head and poses briefly with it. The hat will remain on her head until she gets hit by an attack (which will knock it off) or tries to use this taunt again (which will cause her to throw it away). |
Side Taunt
Saffron summons the card of her current Deck Spell out of thin air, like a magician. After showing it to her enemy, she just as quickly dispels it. |
Down Taunt
Saffron pulls one glove off to look at her wristwatch, tapping the face experimentally. |
Left Victory Pose
Saffron thrusts one arm forwards, summoning a Ragnarok blade that floats ominously behind her. |
Up Victory Pose
Three new cards appear in front of Saffron, and she looks between them, contemplating which to take. |
Right Victory Pose
Saffron turns away from the camera and looks towards the distant horizon. |
Classic Mode: One Step From Calamity[]
The encounters that Saffron faces during her Classic Mode, "One Step From Calamity," are loosely based off a few of the Calamity spells the player can obtain in One Step From Eden. Said Calamity Spells play a heavy role in the fighting style of each opponent you face.

Road To Eden is the stage that comes packaged with Saffron, based on the battlefields that the player fights enemies in while playing One Step From Eden. Compared to the The Darkest Dungeon stage from the previous DLC pack, Road To Eden is significantly smaller, though still decently big as far as stages go. The stage consists of a single large floating platform a bit larger than Final Destination, with four smaller platforms floating in a row directly above it. When hazards are turned on, the occasional enemy will hop onto the stage. They're weak enough that they can be dispatched with a single blow, and drop items when defeated.
Boss Encounters[]
When playing with stage hazards on on Road To Eden, one of seven bosses from One Step To Eden may randomly appear. These bosses will attack the players with all their signature attacks from the original game, and can be attacked just like most Assist Trophies. Depleting a boss's health will leave them prone. You can either leave them be for an enormous burst of healing, or land a finishing blow to gain a special buff. Just be careful when fighting them; the bosses will leave early after they successfully K.O. a player.
Gunner, the hotblooded cannon-toting mercenary. More information to be added!
Hazel, the refugee mechanic and master of turrets. More information to be added!
Reva, the knight who protects those in need. More information to be added!
Selicy, the fleet-footed young woman with the endless supply of quips and references, is the most evasive boss by a wide margin. She hops from point to point, slashing at nearby foes with blades of ice. She will only stand still when performing a long-range attack utilizing the four icicles that float by her side at all times, which she hurls at enemies from all directions or uses to quickly teleport to distant positions.
The fighter who defeats Selicy gains an ice element on all their attacks, letting them freeze foes solid with their heavier hits.
Shiso, the mysterious and relentless assassin. More information to be added!
Terra, the sorceress who rules the new world. More information to be added!
Violette, the musician with a razor focus on her craft. More information to be added! |

- The decision to make a DLC pass based on One Step From Eden was largely a spur-of-the-moment one. IncarnateParanoia had been planning on making another SSBUx page for a while, but had not been able to decide which character they wanted to do until the day of the page's creation.
