Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Touhou Project is a piece of DLC for Nintendo's acclaimed platform fighter Super Smash Bros Ultimate, bringing content from the Touhou Project, a long-running indie bullet hell series.

The third Challenger's Pack in Fighter's Pass Vol. 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Touhou Project brings a new fighter in Touhou's main character Reimu Hakurei, as well as many new Spirits, the Hakurei Shrine as a stage, and a massive amount of the Touhou Project's famous songs. In addition, the pack was accompanied by a new wave of Mii Costumes, each based on characters from the Touhou Project.

This pack was made as a proof-of-concept for a potential Challenger Pack based around Touhou, as well as to demonstrate the franchise's large impact and relevancy.

Franchise Overview

What is the Touhou Project?

The Touhou Project, usually referred to as just Touhou (And officially titled Project Shrine Maiden in the West, though nobody really uses that name) is a long-running series of bullet hell shoot-em-ups developed by Team Shanghai Alice. However, this name is misleading on multiple levels; Nobody there is named Alice, the company is located in Japan rather than Shanghai, and it isn't even a team-Everything, from the artwork, to the music, to the game itself, is developed by one man. His name is Jun'ya Ota, but most people call him ZUN. Touhou is one of, if not THE oldest and biggest indie game series, and is a major pillar of the doujin (Amateur self-published works) scene.

Touhou began in 1996, with the PC-98 game Highly Responsive to Prayers. There, the inexperienced shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei frantically tried to direct a bouncing Yin-Yang Orb into various enemies. Over time, the series began to evolve into what most fans are familiar with, signified by the shift from the PC-98 to Windows. This brought on a soft reboot, as well as the shift to being self-published rather than being published by Amusement Makers.

YukariDanmaku

A more extreme example of Touhou's gameplay.

After the shift to Windows, the general formula solidified. The gameplay is portrayed by a top-down perspective, where the player maneuvers their character-Always Reimu Hakurei and her witch friend Marisa Kirisame, sometimes with a third or fourth character that varies between games-Through six stages worth of difficult and intricate patterns of danmaku, or projectiles. If the requirements are met, and extra stage will be unlocked as well. While some danmaku patterns are simple and unnamed, the majority are spell cards; Personalized patterns unique to a certain character.

As of current, the Touhou Project has 17 mainline games, including the PC-98 releases. However, it has a sizable number of spin-off titles as well; These games are indicated by a decimal point in their numbering, based on the mainline titles they were released between-For example, Immaterial and Missing Power is numbered 7.5, and Fairy Wars is the 12.8th. These spin-offs include six fighting games, five unorthodox shooters, and an upcoming side-scrolling action game. In addition, Touhou has a sizeable amount of print works and music albums, expanding it's universe even further. These supplementary materials have good synergy with the games, with just about every game character getting a mention, and a couple characters from the books making appearances in the games.

What is Touhou About?

The Touhou Project takes place in Gensokyo, a haunted region of Japan sealed off from the Outside World. Gensokyo is home to humans, but it also houses various fantastical beings, such as youkai, fairies, oni, and the like. The name Touhou translates to "Eastern" or "Oriental," and the Project mostly draws from Japanese culture; However, some characters occasionally draw from other cultures.

Gensokyo was created to allow for the survival of youkai; Since youkai require humans to fear them to exist, they had a hard time surviving in an increasingly scientific and skeptical world. As a result, Gensokyo was cut off from the outside world with the Great Hakurei Barrier, maintained by the Hakurei Shrine. This shrine is managed by Reimu Hakurei, the main protagonist of Touhou. In addition to the youkai, various things that are forgotten are often transported to Gensokyo as well, meaning Gensokyo is home to quite a few extinct species.

In order to perpetuate Gensokyo's existence, the spell card system was put in place. The spell card system acts as an equalizer, so that humans may defend themselves and youkai may sustain themselves, without bloodshed from either party. In gameplay, this serves to justify the existence of the danmaku patterns, right down to the names. The ease of battle, coupled with the lack of injury, has also led to the inhabitants of Gensokyo fighting at the drop of a hat for varying reasons.

The main crux of the game's plots revolve around Incidents; Various abnormal events. These Incidents vary in severity, from something as life-threatening as an eternal winter to something as harmless as a flying boat suddenly appearing. Reimu, Marisa, and whoever else they may have brought along then set out to resolve these Incidents, usually by beating up everyone in their path until they get to the culprit. Due to the aforementioned spell card system, the culprit usually caused the Incident just because they were bored, and are let off the hook just as easily, though there are some deviations from the norm. Either way, the amount of instigators who weren't forgiven can be counted on one hand.

An interesting thing to note is Touhou's staggeringly-large cast of characters, with the majority having a minor role and a very vague personality. This leads to many different interpretations, as well as minor characters suddenly becoming extremely popular. In addition, the vast majority of characters are female; The amount of male characters is incredibly small, especially when taking into account the fact that most of those males were only mentioned. According to ZUN, men do exist in Gensokyo, but most characters shown are female because the series has built up a reputation of having young-looking girls fighting instead of spaceships and military vehicles. As a result, introducing a male character now would feel rather odd.

What is the Impact of the Touhou Project?

The Touhou Project's real claim to fame is it's absolutely massive fanbase. Despite it's status as a simple shoot-em-up, the colorful cast of characters, coupled with ZUN's incredibly lax and encouraging attitude towards fanworks, has lead to Touhou becoming a major pillar of the doujin scene, though in the Touhou fandom this term is usually used to refer to Touhou fanworks. The Touhou Project dominates fan conventions, enough that it got a yearly convention all to itself in the form of Reitaisai. While the fandom isn't at the same level as it's peak thanks to the advent of more recent doujin games, the Touhou fandom is still going strong.

The sheer amount of Touhou fanworks is so large that some fans aren't even aware that the franchise is based around the games. Many fan-made anime adaptations exist of the series, though ZUN is adamantly against an official adaptation, and multiple fangames have been produced as well, from Touhou versions of other games like Castlevania and Mega Man to original creations; Some are serious, while others are offbeat and based around fandom in-jokes and memes.

One of the biggest parts of the Touhou fandom is the music. Touhou's soundtrack is held in high regard, and many doujin circles cover those songs and sell albums at conventions. Touhou music is so heavily covered that most songs have between 60 and 200 covers. Some covers get so popular that they surpass the original song and become viral, such as Masayoshi Minoshima's Bad Apple!! feat. nomico, IOSYS' Cirno's Perfect Math Class (A remix of Beloved Tomboyish Girl), BeatMario's Night of Nights (A cover of Flowering Night), and... Whatever the %$#@ this was supposed to be (It's a weird remix of U.N. Owen Was Her called Ronald McDonald Insanity, but most people didn't know back then).

While Touhou has mostly remained in Japan and on computers, it has started branching out in recent years. At the time of writing, twelve of the thirty official games have been ported to Steam. While only one has been officially translated, this is simply because ZUN knows the fanbase will create their own translation in a couple of days, relieving him of the responsibility of translation. In addition, ZUN struck a deal with Sony to bring Touhou fangames to the PlayStation 4, and some fangames have released on the Nintendo Switch as well.

Introduction

Reimu Hakurei is the main protagonist of the Touhou Project, and for good reason. She is in charge of managing the ancestral Hakurei Shrine, which gives her two important jobs: One, exterminate troublesome youkai, and two: Look after the Great Hakurei Barrier, which hides Gensokyo from the Outside World and allows for it's youkai inhabitants to survive even when outside humans stop believing in them.

Interestingly, no official story has been told from Reimu's perspective, despite her being the main protagonist. This leads to multiple different interpretations of her character, from strict and dutiful to lazy and obsessed with get-rich-quick schemes. Still, some of her personality traits seem to pop up quite often.

Reimu is usually straightforward and optimistic. Due to her duty, she is rather distant, especially from other humans. She can swing from one mood to the next fairly quickly, being cheerful and airheaded one moment, and harsh and irritable the next. While she thinks of youkai and humans equally, her status as youkai exterminator often forces her to antagonize them. However, she usually ends up befriending the youkai she fights, allowing her to act as a meditator between humans and youkai. On the flipside, her impartial view means she isn't very attached to others either; with her being described as "actually alone in her heart."

Playstyle

Reimu is a mobile defensive zoner who, true to her bullet hell origins, is built around dodging attacks while slowly chipping away at her opponent until they reach kill percent. On the flipside, she can't take many hits, being the same weight as Meta Knight and Zero Suit Samus, making it essential to use her defensive capabilities to the fullest. In addition, Reimu comes with some unique abilities and attributes, further bolstering her defensive capabilities. Much like her home series, Reimu is hard to get a hang of, but amazingly rewarding and amazing to watch once you do.

Taken from the aerial battles of Touhou, Reimu's air game is incredible. Her high jump height and air speed, coupled with her moderate fall speed, makes her fast and floaty, allowing her to cover great distances and dance around attacks with ease. In addition, her aerials are all quite useful, and her Focus mechanic makes Reimu almost uncontested in the air.

Reimu's Graze gimmick effectively makes her immune to all but the strongest projectiles, allowing her to simply dash into projectiles with no ill effect. In addition, her down smash and down special utilize barriers that block out any attacks that hit them. When used right, Reimu's Graze and barriers combined makes her almost invincible.

Despite her many strengths, Reimu is not perfect. Her light weight means she is easily knocked around and comboed, meaning one false move can spell doom. In addition, Reimu doesn't have many kill moves save for her forward smash and up special. Lastly, Reimu struggles against fighters with long-reaching melee attacks, such as Shulk, Min Min, and Simon, making them highly effective counterpicks against her.

Overall, Reimu is deemed a viable, high-tier fighter by the competitive community. While she is hard to get a hang of, reflective of the Touhou Project's high difficulty, when used right, she becomes an unmatched defensive zoner, able to dance around attacks, laugh at projectiles, and fly across the stage while rarely ever making contact with the ground. While her light weight and lack of kill moves, her mobility, barriers, and projectiles more than make up for it. Some even go as far as to call her the best in the game, though this status is contested, especially after some post-launch nerfs.

Moveset

Fighter Abilities

  • Grazing - When Reimu is standing, walking, dodging, or using her up special, she becomes immune to projectiles. When this occurs, the Grazing sound effect from the Touhou games will play. Functionally, this is more or less the same as the shields used by the Links and the Heroes. Grazing is a staple of the series, occurring when the player just barely misses a projectile. This adds points to their score, so high-level players often go out of their way to cause Grazing to get a higher score. This mechanic is also present in the fighting games, where a fighter becomes immune to projectiles during a dash or a super jump; Ironically, this is more or less the inverse of Smash's take on the concept.
  • Shot Types - Reimu has two different shots, Hakurei Amulet and Persuasion Needle. In general, the Hakurei Amulet has a larger hitbox and is more defensive, while the Persuasion Needle is faster and stronger, and is better at offense. Reimu can switch between them with her down special, elaborated on below, and uses these shots for her jab, side tilt, up smash, forward and back aerials, up throw, and neutral special.
  • Power Meter - Reimu's projectiles-The Hakurei Amulet, Persuasion Needle, and Yin-Yang Orbs-Would be strengthened by her Power Meter. This meter fills up primarily by dealing damage to opponents, encouraging Reimu to play more aggressively and not just start camping at the edge of the stage. The Power Meter also fills up slightly in response to Grazing, Perfect Shielding, glancing blows, and dodging attacks. However, the Power Gauge doesn't fill up as much during evasive or defensive maneuvers. As such, her primary source of filling up the meter comes from dealing damage and being aggressive. In the mainline games, the power of the player's shots is increased with the Power Meter. This is gained through collecting Power Items, generally by destroying enemies. While Grazing doesn't fill up the Power Meter, it does increase the player's score, which is translated by having it fill up the Power Meter in Smash.
  • Reimu's gohei can destroy projectiles, much like the Belmont's whip. While this isn't directly taken from any Touhou media, it fits in with Reimu's anti-zoning capabilities and her distant nature.
  • When Reimu air dodges, she will stay in place after the dodge instead of falling, allowing her to maintain her position or right herself. This is an adaptation of Focusing and her ability to float, elaborated on under her up special.

Ground Moves

Description
Jab (Tapped) Reimu throws out a single large projectile. The Hakurei Amulet is larger and has a homing property, while the Persuasion Needle is faster and deals more damage. Based on the interpretations of the respective moves from the fighting games.
Jab (Held) Reimu shoots a volley of projectiles. Holding the button increases the duration of the move. The Hakurei Amulet has a wider spread, while the Persuasion Needle has slightly better range. Based on the standard shooting attack from the mainline games, as well as her 5B move from the ground fighters.
Forward Tilt A long-range gohei thrust. A good poking tool. Based on her far 5A from the ground fighters.
Up Tilt Reimu fires a projectile upward. Based on her shot move from Highly Responsive to Prayers.
Down Tilt Reimu spins her gohei on the ground. Based on her 2A from the ground fighters.
Dash Attack A sliding kick. Pressing the button again causes Reimu to perform a flip kick. Based on the slide and Ascension Kick from Highly Responsive to Prayers, which in turn was adapted into the ground fighters.
Forward Smash A horizontal gohei swing. While one of her slowest attacks, it is also one of her few kill moves. Based on her 6A move from the air fighters.'
Up Smash Reimu swings her gohei above her head twice. Based on the gohei move from Highly Responsive to Prayers.
Down Smash (Cautionary Border) Reimu creates a pair of barriers on either side. These barriers can deflect projectiles, much like Ness and Lucas' side smash or Min Min's up smash. An altered version of her Cautionary Border attack from the ground fighters. Resembles Pit's down special.

Aerial Moves

Description
Neutral Aerial Reimu throws out a single large projectile. Similar to her tapped jab.
Forward Aerial (Youkai Buster) Reimu fires three fast projectiles forward. The Hakurei Amulet spreads apart as it travels, while the Persuasion Needle deals more damage. Based on the Youkai Buster shot, specifically the version used in the fighters.
Back Aerial Reimu fires a stream of projectiles behind her. Resembles her held jab, but with less spread and more range. Based on her jumping 5B from the ground fighters.
Up Aerial (Ascension Kick) A flip kick. Based off the Ascension Kick from the fighters, which itself is adapted from Highly Responsive to Prayers.
Down Aerial Reimu swings her gohei downward. An original move, though loosely resembles the killing blow used on the fortune teller in Forbidden Scrollery. Also resembles Ike's down aerial, albeit a good deal faster.

Throws

Description
Grab Reimu traps the opponent using her Yin-Yang Orbs.
Pummel Reimu sharply jabs the opponent with her gohei. Based off her far 5A move from the ground fighters.
Forward Throw A crosscheck with the gohei. Based off her 6A move from the ground fighters.
Back Throw Reimu warps the opponent behind her, then smacks them away with her gohei. Resembles Sephiroth's back throw.
Up Throw Reimu throws the opponent upwards and fires a shot at them. Based on her shot move from Highly Responsive to Prayers, and resembles her up tilt.
Down Throw Reimu sticks a talisman on the opponent and throws them down, followed by the talisman exploding on the opponent. Loosely based off her grab animation from the air fighters.

Specials

Name Description
Ext3 0e1 Options Reimu fires a stream of projectiles from her Yin-Yang Orbs. Both shots have unique effects for this move. The Hakurei Amulet has a mild homing effect, and can be charged to increase the size, power, and homing capabilities. The Persuasion Needles are faster and stronger, and can be spammed by holding the button down.

Options are a mainstay of the mainline games, being objects floating around your character that add some extra firepower to your shots. Depending on the game, you either have two Options or up to four. Reimu's Options are her ancestral Yin-Yang Orbs, elaborated on below.

Ext3 0e1 Ext3 0d6 Yin-Yang Orb Reimu throws a Yin-Yang Orb forward. If it hits a wall, it will bounce off. The attack can be angled and charged, with the latter increasing the size, power, and speed of the orb. After a short amount of time, the orb will return to Reimu. Reimu can fire both orbs in rapid succession; During the attack, the Yin-Yang Orb will not fire projectiles during the neutral special. If charged, Reimu cannot fire the second orb.

The Yin-Yang Orbs are magic, anti-youkai artifacts, and one of Reimu's signature items. In Highly Responsive to Prayers, Reimu had to guide a bouncing Yin-Yang Orb around the screen, while in the shooters they became Options. The fighting games have a move that harkens back to HRtP, which this attack is based on (Albeit shrunken down to fit in with the Option interpretation).

Ext3 0e1 Ext3 0d1 Focusing Reimu rises into the air, much like R.O.B.'s up special. Like R.O.B., Reimu does not go into freefall after using the move, allowing her to continue moving and attacking as usual. During this move, Reimu is capable of Grazing.

Focusing is a very useful move from the mainline games that slows Reimu down and shows her hitbox, allowing her to dodge and Graze more easily. This is a staple of Touhou's gameplay, and the games would be that much harder withoutit. In addition, this move also adapts flying capabilities of pretty much every Touhou character, as well as Reimu's unique ability to float.

Ext3 0e1 Ext3 0d2 Shot Change Reimu changes her shot type. This functions much like Min Min's ARMS Change; By default Reimu starts with the Hakurei Amulet, and can switch freely between shots on the fly.

Changing shots is a recurring part of the Touhou series. Before starting a playthrough, the player can choose their character and which version they use, creating more ways to play. This usually takes the form of different shot types, though some games add a twist to it (Youkai partners, sub-shots instead of main shots, Animal Spirits, etc.). Due to the differences in gameplay, Reimu can swap on the fly in Smash rather than choosing from the beginning.

SSBUSmashBall Fantasy Seal Reimu creates a storm of multicolored orbs that home in on opponents, dealing damage all over the stage. Functions somewhat similarly to Diddy Kong's Final Smash.

Fantasy Seal is Reimu's signature "Bomb," a limited-use attack that deals high damage all over the screen. Bombs have different requirements for obtainment throughout the series, but usually they must be collected. This is somewhat similar to grabbing a Smash Ball to pull off a Final Smash, meaning it doesn't have to be shoved into Reimu's normal moveset.

FinalSmashSymbol Fantasy Nature

If Reimu's opponent is at 70% or higher, she will send out a burst of energy and talismans, dealing massive damage in a wide radius and instantly killing anyone over 100%. Notably, Mystic Oriental Love Consultation (End of Century) from Hisoutensoku will start playing during the Final Smash, and will continue to do so during the results screen if the match is ended with this attack.

Fantasy Nature is the ultimate expression of Reimu's abilities, causing her to float away from reality itself and become invincible. This attack is so powerful that she refused to use it in spell card battles until Marisa put a name and time limit on it, despite Reimu being the biggest slacker in Gensokyo. This move has taken many forms through the series and is up to interpretation; In this case, Smash adapts the version from Hisoutensoku.

Animations

  • Entrance: Reimu flies in through a gap.
  • Idle Animation 1: Reimu boredly fiddles with her gohei.
  • Idle Animation 2: Reimu rests her gohei over her shoulders.
  • Up Taunt: Reimu faces the screen with her gohei over her shoulders, holding a pair of ofuda in her left hand. Based on her artwork from Perfect Memento in Strict Sense.
  • Side Taunt: Reimu lifts her gohei up and down on either side of her in a prayer motion.
  • Down Taunt: Reimu dusts off her hands and puts them on her hips. Based on one of her victory animations from the air fighters.
  • Victory Animations:
    • Reimu throws a talisman onto the screen, reading "No solicitors!" Based on one of her victory animations from the air fighters, which themselves reference one of her spell cards from Double Spoiler.
    • The camera zooms in on Reimu, who puts her gohei behind her back and smiles. Based on the title screen of Double Dealing Character.
    • Reimu sits down and opens her donation box, then frowns upon finding there is nothing in it.
    • If the match was finished with Fantasy Nature, Reimu uses Fantasy Seal, creating numerous multicolor orbs that orbit around her. During this, the camera zooms in on her eyes, which are glowing with energy.
  • Reimu's victory theme is a remix of the first few seconds of Theme of Eastern Storythe most recurring theme in the Touhou Project. This remix is made in ZUN's signature style, prominently featuring a violin, synthesizers, and trumpets, the latter of which is commonly referred to as "ZUNpets" by the fans.
  • When Kirby copies Reimu, he will gain her hair and signature ribbon, as well as her neutral special, Hakurei Amulet.
  • Uniquely, whenever an attack whiffs Reimu or she Grazes a projectile, the Graze sound effect will play.
  • When Reimu is defeated, she will explode into a burst of Point Items.

Alternate Costumes

Number Origin
#1 Reimu's default design.
#2 A blue and white outfit with green hair, referencing fellow shrine maiden and friendly rival Sanae Kochiya. It also resembles her Player 2 color palette from the fighting games.
#3 A yellow and green outfit with light green hair. Based on the unconsciously-functioning satori Koishi Komeiji. Reimu's Yin-Yang Orbs become purple, referencing Koishi's closed third eye.
#4 A green outfit and white hair, referencing the half-phantom gardener Youmu Konpaku. Reimu's Yin-Yang Orbs become fully white, as a nod towards Youmu's phantom half.
#5 A purple and white outfit with blonde hair. References Reimu's mentor, the mysterious gap youkai Yukari Yakumo.
#6 A dull white and red outfit with white hair. Based off of the fire-wielding immortal Fujiwara no Mokou.
#7 Black and white with blonde hair. References the secondary protagonist of Touhou and Reimu's best friend, Marisa Kirisame, as well as the first boss of the Windows era, the darkness youkai Rumia.
#8 Reimu's PC-98 era outfit.

Classic Mode

Reimu's Classic Mode is a recreation of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the sixth and most well-known Touhou game, as well as the first in the Windows era. As a reference to Touhou's gameplay, every match uses the Stamina ruleset. Reimu has three stocks with 50 HP each, while her opponent has one stock with 100 HP.

The Hakurei Shrine is a new stage that comes with Challenger Pack 8. A run-down Shinto shrine located on the east side of Gensokyo, the Hakurei Shrine generates the Great Hakurei Barrier, which hides Gensokyo from the Outside World. It is the only entrance to Gensokyo, and as such it is a key location in the Touhou Project.

Reimu is in charge of taking care of the shrine. However, being the lazy slacker she is, she doesn't take care of it very well. In addition, she tends to befriend whatever youkai she exterminates, causing them to all flock to her shrine. Lastly, in recent times the Hakurei Shrine has faced religous competition from the more modern Moriya Shrine, the Buddhist Myouren Temple, and the Taoist Great Mausoleum. All in all, Reimu doesn't get very many donations, leaving her in near-constant poverty.

The Hakurei Shrine is a simple stage, floating in the air. Fighters can duke it out on both the ground and on the roof of the temple, with the latter being a soft platform. Occasionally, yin-yang platforms will appear, forming patterns that reference Reimu's Option patterns. These patterns include:

  • Two platforms, one on either side of the shrine.
  • Two above the shrine.
  • Four above the shrine.
  • Four below the shrine's roof.
  • Four spread out in a square formation.
  • Four rotating around the stage.
  • Four platforms, two in the upper-right side and two in the bottom-left side.

Cameos

The Touhou Project, as mentioned above, is known for it's absolutely massive amount of characters. Due to the nature of spell card battles, most of the youkai Reimu exterminates come to hang out at the shrine with her. This has the unfortunate side effect of leaving her without many donations, as socializing with the youkai she is supposed to exterminate doesn't exactly do wonders for her reputation.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Hakurei Shrine is home to the largest amount of cameos in the entire game, at a whopping 46 (51 if groups are counted separately). The characters appear scattered throughout the shrine, watching the battle from afar. This somewhat resembles the stages of Hopeless Masquerade, where almost every character in the series up to that point made an appearance in the background. The Hakurei Shrine was one of these stages.

Characters
Marisassbu
Marisa Kirisame

Marisa is the secondary protagonist of the Touhou Project, and Reimu's closest friend. She prides herself on being an ordinary human magician, and contrasts Reimu by being straightforward and easy to understand. She is also infamous for stealing anything she can get her hands on, including her own signature move, the Master Spark.

MimaTouhouMS
Mima

Mima is a vengeful spirit that Reimu faces regularly in the PC-98 games. She claimed to know a lot about the Hakurei Shrine, as well as desiring revenge against the human race. However, she has lived for so long that she forgot most of this knowledge. Mima is most well known for effectively being the secondary main character of the PC-98 games, then dropping off the face of the earth after the shift to Windows.

TouhouGenjii
Genjii

Back in the PC=98 games, Reimu couldn't fly on her own. As a result, she had to ride on the back of the flying turtle Genjii. Due to his age and closeness to Reimu, she often calls him "Gramps." While he hasn't made an appearance since Mystic Square, ZUN has stated that he's probably living in the lake at the back of the Hakurei Shrine.

Th06Rumia
Rumia

The very first boss to use the now-common spell card system, Rumia is a shadow youkai. She has the ability to manipulate darkness, and uses her powers to blind her prey... Except she can't see through her own darkness, and often knocks herself out against a tree in the confusion. Frankly, she's probably the dumbest character in the entire series.

Cirno
Cirno

A fairy that controls ice, Cirno is known for two things: Claiming to be the strongest despite fairies being the weakest beings in Gensokyo, and being an idiot. Despite her apparent weakness, Cirno has actually proven to be the strongest fairy, and has been slowly climbing up the ranks of Gensokyo's power levels. Perhaps she's not that far off the mark...

Hong Meiling
Hong Meiling

A proud Chinese youkai with a mastery over Tai Chi Chuan, Hong Meiling is the gatekeeper of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She is a laid-back individual who has a tendency to take siestas on the job, which tends to get her into trouble. While she isn't very strong as a youkai, she is well-rounded against humans, which is likely why she was appointed gatekeeper.

Patchouli
Patchouli Knowledge

Patchouli Knowledge is a magician youkai, gifted with control over the five Chinese elements-Fire, water, wood, metal, and earth. She stays in the Scarlet Devil Mansion's library for... Something. Whatever the reason, it's never really explained. Patchy suffers from asthma, anemia, and vitamin A deficiency, making her rather fragile. As such, she's forced to stay in her library most of the time.

Th14Sakuya
Sakuya Izayoi

The maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Sakuya is a human born outside of Gensokyo... And that's about all we know of her backstory. While various ideas have been suggested, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Sakuya is easy-going and refined, acting with mannerisms and abilities far beyond her supposed age. She fights with a massive array of knives, aided by her unique ability to control the flow of time.

RemiliaHisoutensoku
Remilia Scarlet

Remilia Scarlet is the mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She is a vampire with many powerful magical abilities, and gives off an aura of charisma and elegance... Except she's actually as childish as her looks suggest. Her light appetite means most humans she feeds off of live, but she ends up staining her clothes from it, giving her the title Scarlet Devil.

Th06Flandre
Flandre Scarlet

Flandre Scarlet is Remilia's little sister. She has the terrifying ability to destroy whatever she wants. This, coupled with her emotional instability and lack of control, has led her to be locked away in the Scarlet Devi Mansion's basement for almost five hundred years. Despite this, she's actually nice and quiet, even if she is a bit odd at times.

AliceMargatroid
Alice Margatroid

Alice is a doll-controlling magician. She used to be a human, but became a magician youkai after becoming strong enough. Spirit Battle References

  • Marisa: The poison floor and the mushrooms represent Marisa's potions and the mushrooms she uses to make them. The Mii Gunner would use the maid outfit as an approximation of Marisa's outfit, and the sudden final smash references her signature Master Spark, a massive beam for energy. Reimu and the Hakurei Shrine is a nod towards their closeness, as Marisa is Reimu's closest friend.
  • Cirno: The Ice Climbers represent both Cirno's ice powers and Daiyousei, the fairy midboss of Cirno's stage in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. The battle description is a cheeky nod towards the memes surrounding Cirno being the strongest in Gensokyo.
    • Cirno (HSiFS): The Enhancement to her Hidden Star in Four Seasons design is a reference to what might be her greatest moment, as she defeated the god Okina on her own. It also references the boost in power she received from the seasonal energies at the time.
  • Aya Shameimaru: Dark Pit is an obvious stand-in for Aya, thanks to her black wings. The strong winds reference Aya's own power to manipulate the winds, and Yuri references her photography. The Great Plateau Tower is a reference to the engu's home, Youkai Mountain.
  • Sanae Kochiya: Reimu represents Sanae by virtue of being a fellow shrine maiden, as well as having her own alternate costume based on Sanae. The other fighters represent Sanae's patron dieties; Palutena represents the sky god Kanako, while Ivysaur represents the comparitively sillier earth god Suwako. The Ore Club Reimu is equipped with represents both gods, being a large club of rock that can fire off tornadoes.
  • Byakuren Hijiri: Byakuren is represented by Zelda, who's more physical style of magic is used as a stand-in for Byakuren's own physical spells. The increased move speed and the invisible, Motorbike-spamming Wario both represent Turbo Granny, her urban legend from Urban Legend in Limbo. Lastly, the Rainbow Cruise represents her own ship, the Palanquin Ship
  • Toyosatomimi no Miko: Marth is a shoe-in for Miko, being the refined and graceful prince. Zelda and Dark Samus represents her followers the feng-shui manipulating Futo and the ghost Tojiko. Marth having to be defeated twice is a nod to Miko's resurrection. The Kalos Pokemon League is used as a stand-in for the Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum.
  • Flandre Scarlet: The female Villager is used as the closest approximation to the young, destructive Flandre. The Fire Bar and multiple Villagers reference her spell cards Taboo "Lävatein" and Taboo "Four of a Kind", respectively, while the Stamina Battle and temporary invincibility reference the long, grueling battles and survival spell cards of the Touhou Project's Extra Stage bosses.
  • Sakuya Izayoi: Shiek's speedy fighting style and Needle Storm allows her to stand in for Sakuya and her knives. The time simulates Sakuya's time-stopping abilities. Alucard, being half-vampire, represents her vampire master, Remilia, and Dracula's Castle represents the Scarlet Devil Mansion. The Giant Killer ability is a nod to Sakuya's possible past as a vampire killer.
  • Youmu Konpaku: Kirby does double-duty as both Youmu's phantom half and her master Yuyuko. Death's Scythe and the abundance of food represent both Yuyuko's powers over death and her large appetite. Youmu herself is only truly represented through Lyn, reflecting her status as a servant. The Weapon Attack boost references her swordfighting skills.
  • Reisen Udongein Inaba: Reisen is represented by the Inkling's purple alt, with the Bunny Hood and Ray Gun referencing Reisen's being a Moon Rabbit and her weapon in the air fighters. Her Spirit equipping you with a Bunny Hood is, obviously, also from her being a rabbit. The Tomodachi Life stage references Eientei.
  • Suika Ibuki: The Stamina Battle aspect references Suika's status as the final boss of the fighting game, Immaterial and Missing Power. The giant size from both the Spirit Battle and the Spirit's effect represent Suika's density manipulation and size-changing, and the Moon and Fountain of Dreams are meant to simulate the final stage of IaMP, simply titled Gensokyo.
  • Mamizou Futatsuiwa: Mamizou herself is represented by Mario, and the Super Leaves in the Spirit Battle and the Spirit's effect represent her being a Bake-danuki. The Isabelles represent her tanuki followers, and the Ditto is a nod to her power to disguise objects.
  • Sumireko Usami: Ness is used to represent Sumireko due to their psychic powers, which is also reflected in Sumireko's PSI Attack boost. Fourside is used as a close match with her home stage in Urban Legend in Limbo, the Outside World, and the Abra represent her teleportation powers. Lastly, the other Nesses reference her final battle in Antimony of Common Flowers, where Sumireko fought two doppelgangers of herself.
  • Yukari Yakumo: Yukari is represented by Peach, while her shikigami Ran and her shikigami Chen are represented by Fox and Incineroar, respectively. The Stamina Battle setting and the many projectile-based Assist Trophies represent the general gameplay of Touhou, and Mementos referenced both her gaps and her infamous spell card, Obsolete Line "Trip to the Old Station".

The Mii Costumes were chosen for the following reasons:

  • Marisa was chosen for being the second main protagonist of the project.
  • Meiling and Utsuho were chosen because they would easily fit the mold of their respective Miis.
  • Suika and Tenshi were chosen for being the final bosses of the first two Touhou fighting games.

If the player has purchased the costumes for Marisa, Suika, and Meiling, they will replace the fighters in their respective Spirit Battles and Classic Mode fight.

Trivia

  • This page stems from SharkLord's recent interest in the Touhou Project and a desire to bring more attention to the series, as well as a desire to show improvement since his first page, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
  • While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Touhou Project was originally intended to be a more realistic concept than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, it ended up going off the rails as SharkLord proceeded to cram every cameo and song possible into the page.
  • Embodiment of Scarlet Devil has the most songs out of the games represented, with a whopping 9 songs. Conversely, Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream and Violet Detector are tied for the least amount of songs represented, at only one.
  • The song Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly ~ Red and White marks the first time in Smash that a tracklist uses a song from a series owned by an entirely different company-In this case, Amusement Maker's Seihou Project.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate X Touhou Project is the first time Smash has used fanmade covers and songs from fangames. Concealed the Conclusion and Azure Reflections hold the honor of being the first fangames to be represented in Smash, with Concealed the Conclusion being the first to have a unique song directly taken from the game.
