REVOLUTION LOGO GLOW ALT

Super Smash Bros. Revolution follows Ultimate as the sixth entry in the Super Smash Bros. series, realeased on Nintendo's Next Generation console in July, 2027 after a long period of time since it's reveal in March, 2024. This game continues the "EVERYONE IS HERE" trope, now with stages, songs and items returning as well. It's also the second instalment to have a competitive balance in mind, with a large focus of the roster is to introduce interesting newcomers and fan-favourites, and rework veterans based on latest and oldest appearances. Previous modes from multiple other titles also return to this instalment, besides World of Light and Subspace Emissary. Masahiro Sakurai takes the role of Director, helped by Nintendo, Bandai Namco and third-party company SuperStar Studios.

New Features[]

  • Movement speed, which includes aerial and fall speed, has been increased for every veteran in the game.
  • The game now has gameplay and mechanics inspired from Capcom's Marvel VS Capcom series, but fitted for a fplatform fighter and with some tweaks to fit with the Smash Bros, style.
  • Shield is genrally buffed, and no longer too easy to break - even moves with high damage output won't deplete it as much as it did before. It also will not drop out in multi-hitting moves.
  • Chains are introduced to the game. With every hit you do in a combo, you now gain additional damage for how many unique hits you land in a row. The more unique, the better. Finishers grant bonus points in time mode.
  • Breakers are introduced to the game - upon getting hit into an infinite (over 10 hits), you have the option to break the combo with a boost. However, this is laggy, and when used improperly makes you open for a punish.
  • In Team Battles with Team Damage set to on, you can now grab and throw your teammates to get close to the action. However, this will still deal damage to them.
  • Custom palettes can be created in Customisation for your characters - up to 10 slots can be created.
    • Same can also be done with Mii Fighters and your avatar fighter, both of them have 100 slots instead, and have custom item pieces.
  • The announcer now exclaims "The winner is..." as was previously removed.
  • Your character selection will carry over between consecutive matches in Normal Smash modes. Why this was not a thing in Ultimate I do not know.

Veterans - Changes from Ultimate[]

Fighter01 Mario
  • Cappy appears more frequently in his moveset and animations, such as Super Jump Punch and Cappy Tornado.
  • Mario now has a somewhat jollier flair to his expressions, which include light attacks, taunts, some aerials and special moves. He still does have his more angrier brows and serious faces in other moves, however.
  • Many of Mario's animations have changed a bit to match his appearance in Super Mario Odyssey.
  • Mario's attacks, especially ones involving fire, have been given more retro, flashier effects to fit the game's theme.
  • With the universal 12 costume limit, Mario regains his Wario-inspired and Fire Mario recolours, along with a recolor based on Toadette and his appearance in Mario Tennis Aces. His Waluigi recolor was changed to reference Nabbit instead.
  • Mario is no longer a truly Balanced fighter, his moveset now being a little more of the Rushdown style than before. The Avatar had replaced him as the "jack-of-all-trades" fighter.
  • Mario can now damage an opponent in a footstool. (0.7%)
  • His combo ability, a staple of the character, is relatively unchanged from the previous game.
  • Mario's fireballs can be spammed repeatedly.
  • Super Jump Punch can be used by cancelling a tilt.
  • Cape produces a gust of wind towards the character.
Fighter02 Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong is more of a bruiser and a grappler in this game, as such is reflective in his moveset.
  • Forward Cargo Throw changed directory, to at least 40 degrees. Kills at quite early percents.
  • Down Cargo Throw reverted to Smash 4's, where he throws you down to the blast zone.
  • Dash Attack is altered to go further if you hold down A, but has a weaker hitbox while going the distance. You can also roll off the ledge this way, like his home series.
  • Hand Slap is now revamped into Konga Beat, producing a shockwave of noise like Donkey Kong Jungle Beat of sorts. It does not retain the spike properties Hand Slap once had in the air, unfortunately.
  • Forward air and Headbutt have recieved a speed buff, Fair's damage compensated but still powerful.
  • Ding Dongs are somehow once again possible.
  • Instead of gorilla sounds, Donkey Kong now has his proper voice actor, Takashi Nagasako, do his voicelines.
  • His Up Taunt has him slamming his chest more proudly. His side taunt has also changed to him snacking on a banana before throwing it away.
  • Shield Special is Exploding Barrel, where he rolls a DK Barrel that breaks apart upon high falls and touching opponents. Good edgeguard and suprisingly fast.
  • DK gains 12 extra palettes: Orange, Purple, Cyan and Multi-colored Yellow and Blue.kihi
Fighter03 Link
  • Link has been overhauled drastically.
  • Side tilt slices similar to his Side Smash, and produces the same energy ring. Jab also does this.
  • Down tilt, while the same, has less lag so it can easily follow up to Link's new aerial options.
  • Side Smash is an overhead swing of the Master Sword, much like his old side tilt. However, charging this brings a special new ability where Link can make a quake with sourspot wind hitboxes.
  • Forward air is a double slice in a vertical direction rather than a horizontal one, improving his range.
  • Back air connects better.
  • Down Air gets a speed buff.
  • His throws make use of his divine abilities seen in Breath of the Wild:
    • Forward Throw is Daruk's Protection, producing a barrier around him that pushes opponents out.
    • Up Throw is Revali's Gale, producing a tornado. This can be cancelled with Spin Attack or most aerials, depending on the percent. The tornado lingers for a while.
    • Down Throw is Mipha's Grace. He does his old down throw, but he also gains health if you press the special button once it lands.
    • Back Throw is Urbosa's Fury, being his old back throw but with an added electric shock that strikes even foes that are not part of the throw.
  • He can shoot up to three arrows at once if you stock up enough.
  • Boomerang gains the gale once more.
  • Spin Attack hits foes in, but otherwise the knockback has had a nerf.
  • Remote Bombs are more reliable in terms of speed and practicality. You can hold out at least two before you can set them off.
  • Light Arrows become a cinematic final smash, first starting with Epona charging at the foe and Link getting on. He then proceeds to charge and fire the arrow in the plains.

Stages[]

Battlefield

Your basic three platform stage set now in a clock tower. The background spirals with the gear below. The lights change depending on what time of day it is.

Big Battlefield (Ultimate)

Big Battlefield

Your basic seven platform stage but in the open abyss of the oceans. Literally ported from Ultimate because nobody cared about it.

Final Destination (Revolution)

Final Destination

The classic no hassle flat stage with a Vaporwave aesthetic, like many of the game's UI. Background goes through many variations.

Midair Stadium

Midair Stadium

Brawl's no hassle stadium returns as it's own playable entry for the first time! Crowd cheers in the background as the stage transitions from plain to subspace invasion when the foe has one stock or 1 minute remaining in a match.

Meta Crystal (HD)

Meta Crystal

The crystal abyss from Smash 64 finally returns as it's own playable entry for the first time! A fairly simple, no hazards stage

The Ultimate Show

The Ultimate Show

A stage inspired by the Super Smash Bros. Revolution Invatational. A arena area with the screen transitioning from the flaming smash ball to a closeup view of a randomly selected fighter.

Peach's Castle 64

Peach's Castle (64)

A odd shape of platforms surrounding a small castle building. A bumper is present on the top and the red and black checkered platforms move from side to side. There's two walls for your teching needs.

Mushroom Kingdom (64)

Retro Mushroom Kingdom

A new take on the iconic Super Mario Bros. stage with pipes, platforms, teeters and walk-off zones. NES Pirahna Plants come from the pipes.

Princess Peach's Castle

Princess Peach's Castle

On top of the Mushroom Kingdom's most favoured location, this big stage can sometimes have Switches that spawn invisible platforms or a Banzai Bill plunging down to blow up part of the castle!... unsuccesfully.

Rainbow Cruise

Rainbow Cruise

Above the clouds, you're set on a Airship at the beginning of the fight, before eventually climbing up and around again through some tricky platforming. Carpets can be ridden on, and golden donut blocks are present around the map.

Mushroom Kingdom II

Subcon Kingdom

Two big walkoff floors lead to two smaller platforms with a log in between them. Logs go down the river, Pidgits fly on their rideable carpets, and sometimes Birdo shows up to clobber you with eggs!

Delfino Plaza (Ultimate)

Delfino Plaza

The paradise of Delfino Island will be explored with this transition stage from the middle of Delfino Square, to a small pool of water, to even a smaller island! So much to explore, so little time...

Luigi's Mansion (Ultimate)

Luigi's Mansion

In the crooked old Mansion, you fight between the first and second of the building, along with the rooftop. If you knock down the stands in the house, it will tumble down, giving less area to scavenge!

Mushroomy Kingdom (Brawl)

Mushroomy Kingdom

A more modern take on the classic 1-1 and 1-2 stages from Super Mario Bros. Turned into a rigid desert, this autoscroller should bring back childhood memories for some players.

Figure-8 Circuit

Figure-8 Circuit

A simple 8-shaped track with inspiration from the Mario Kart series. Shy Guys drive along the simple course, but don't get run over by one! Or, alternatively, you can hit THEM instead!

Mario Bros. (Stage)

Mario Bros.

A retro underground from the arcade classic Mario Bros.. Shellcreepers and Sidesteppers frequent around the arena. You can hit them from underneath the platforms, attack them, or use the POW Block at the center to knock them down and throw them at your opponents!

3D Land

3D Land

An autoscroller stage that takes you through the charming world of Super Mario 3D Land. You'll encounter Flippers, Note Blocks, tilting platforms, rotating blocks and spike pillars along your journey before going in a giant pipe and resetting the cycle.

Golden Plains

Golden Plains

A flat stage based on New Super Mario Bros. 2. In the stage every fighter has a coin counter. If you get 100 coins - whether it be from the stage, Red Rings or P-Switches, you'll become Gold and your stats increase!

Paper Mario (Stage)

Paper Mario

Three stages packed into one theme. The first has you in Hither Fither Hill. A fan will blow it sometimes to cause havoc! The second is the S.S. Flavion. The stage wil sometimes have a Giant Blooper making waves, or a big whale blowing underneath! The third is based on Bowser's Sky Castle, packed with two platforms and a Statue head that can rotate or snap it's jaw!

Rainbow Road (7)

Rainbow Road

The iconic final cup stage in it's Mario Kart 7 varation. The stage transitions to multiple parts of the track, from the giant moon, to the rotating planet, to the galatic mushrooms, and even to just the normal road itself!

Mushroom Kingdom U (Ultimate)

Mushroomy Kingdom U

A transition stage provided by a green Kamek. The beginning sets you in a no hassle Acorn Plains, though it could change to Meringue Clouds, Rock Candy Mines or Side-Lift Tower! Icicles, Beanstalks, Water spouts and Urchins, and even Nabbit can also shake the stage up!

Good Egg Galaxy

Good Egg Galaxy

A weirdly bending stage with the center of gravity being curved as opposed to centered. Two platforms accompany the walkoff stage, as well as some stunning things flying past it's background occasionally!

Mario Circuit (8)

Mario Circuit

Another transition Mario Kart stage with this iconic track being it's variation from Mario Kart 8. With antigravity, the stage functions differently with the Shy Guys getting you not just from below, but also to the side or even from above!

Super Mario Maker (Ultimate)

Super Mario Maker

A stage that has a layout which always changes every time you revisit it! Multiple items can be found from the source game and it's sequel, and it swaps from Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros U themes!

New Donk City Hall (Ultimate)

New Donk City Hall

An iconic location from Super Mario Odyssey, the stage takes you through multiple parts of the tower. You can get musicians and even the mayor, Pauline to sing along the songs Jump Up, Superstar! or Ground Theme (Super Mario Odyssey)!

Mushroom Kingdom III

Grass Land

You could say this is the Mushroom Kingdom III! The stage is pit in walkoff floor with two big platforms. Koopa Paratroopas and Hammer Brothers will sometimes bombard you every now and then.

Bowser's Castle (M)

Bowser's Fortress

After six games, we finally got a true Bowser's Castle stage. The chained, steel platfrom is surrounded by a waterfall of lava. Sometimes, Thwomps will appear and break the ledges to the stage, also meteor smashing anyone who gets too close!

Dr. Mario (Stage Leak)

Dr. Mario

True to the NES game, the match starts on a low ground with Viruses frequenting around the floor. Touching them causes brief poison damage. Megavitamins will stack around the viruses, eventually eliminating them. The stage has a CRT filter.

Marina Stadium

Marina Stadium

A giant stadium filled with fans from across the Mushroom Kingdom. Spike and Chain Chomp clash out in Tennis while you focus on battling close to court. If one of them gains a Special Shot, it slow downs time of the fight before firing. If you parry, no effect, if you're too late, shieldbreak. Being hit by it at 100% will KO you through a Screen KO.

Forest Maze (Brawl Mod)

Forest Maze

A twisted and dim forest stage with multiple platforms. Sometimes, doors will open and going through them goes to another platform, or sometimes even offstage! Choose your doors wisely as they could lead you to a grand victory!

I swear I'll get back to them one day

Trivia[]

  • Kamek, Funky Kong, Magnus, Black Knight, Kecleon, GrookeyGiygas, Captain Rainbow, Snip & Clip and Beat from Sega's Jet Set Radio were once considered fighters for the game, Funky and Black Knight cut due to "being too similar to their originals", Kamek for his own appearance as a stage hazard, Grookey replaced as a Pokeball Pokemon in favour of Corviknight , and Giygas becoming a boss quite late into development after the team couldn't think how to balance him out.
    • The reasoning for Magnus, Kecleon, Captain Rainbow and Snip & Clip is unknown.
  • The characters Balloon Fighter, Bubbles, Mach Rider, Ayumi, TakamaruDixie Kong, Geno, KrystalRhythm Troupe, Heihachi, Alph, Rex, Spring Man and Ribbon Girl - who were all considered from previous installments in one way or form - had made their way into the game due to SuperStar Studios wanting to "finish the job" with them.
    • In addition, Tetra, Urban Champion and Excitebikes became Assist Trophies, and clever nods to the original characters found in the 200 trials including N.O.N.E. and Dragon King are references to Melee's NONE character used for testing and Smash 64 's initial concept  - Dragon King: The Fighting Game - before it became what it is today.
  • The Avatar fighter does have a default name, called Astar. This name is also said in the cutscenes of the 200 Trials of the Revolution mode if that name is used.
  • The inclusion of the fighter Waluigi was meant to make him the joke fighter of the roster, but it unintentionally made him a mid-tier fighter.
  • Other joke fighters include:
    • King Boo
    • Chandelure
    • Toy-Con Mech
  • The decision to choose Chrom over Marth for a Fire Emblem starter was mostly contreversial to Fire Emblem fans, but fine with everyone else.
  • This is the first Super Smash Bros. game to:
    • Have a assisting director from another company.
    • Gain the biggest filesize of a game in Smash history.
    • Allow Assist fighters to be playable with the use of the Assist Tag.
    • Alter Echo Fighters more than before since Ultimate.
    • Feature a fully original playable fighter, the Avatar.
    • Feature more indie game Assist Trophies and Spirits.
    • Not just have a starter Pokemon's final evolution as the new Pokemon representative
    • Feature much more newcomers than Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS - by a margin.
    • Have the longest development time in Smash Bros. history. (7 year period)
    • Have the most introduced series of all the titles.
    • Have every stage, assist trophy and even items returning from previous installments.
    • Introduce a Fire Emblem Represenative that DOESN'T USE A SWORD.
