Mega Man X☆ (Mega Man X-Star) is an upcoming remake of the Mega Man X series, an Octology of Action-Platforming Games that form the Mega Man X series. The game is a remake in that it retells the plots of the eight games providing more connections between each game and expanding on the world established in the series. In addition the game opts for a 32-Bit visual style resulting in all eight games including Mega Man X7 being 2D Platformers.

Along with these visual changes, the games have also seen a change in their boss rosters, giving greater variety, however the bosses that were removed are now optional side bosses that the player can battle in their respective games. Alongside recreating the eight games, Mega Man X☆ also allows the player to tackle new challenge levels which utilize elements from across the series to create a more challenging experience for returning players.

Background Synopsis[]

The timeline of events leading up to the first game, Mega Man X (MMX) is as follows;

55 Years prior to the start of Mega Man X, while researching on archaeological sites in the desert a researcher in robotics and its history known as Dr. Cain uncovers the ruins of Dr. Light's Lab, finding within it old blueprints of various robots and an in-tact prototype known as Mega Man Model X who according to an old holographic signal left by Dr. Light notes that Mega Man Model X or simply, X is intended to protect humanity from its would be threats.

Dr. Cain takes the knowledge gained from researching X as well as Light's blueprints and begins construction of a new type of Robot known as a Reploid. Early Prototypes are rudimentary and prone to failure however after several years of experimentation, Dr. Cain creates the first widely distributed Reploids, known as First Gen Reploids they show an ability for higher thinking although are still generally limited in their abilities and so are mostly assigned to construction work and handling emergencies.

During this time issues with the programming of the First Gen Reploids is unearthed causing some of them to go into a maddened state known as going Maverick. This issue stems back from the complex design used for X's internal processor as well as him spending decades being quizzed on moral questions. Though the Mavericks pose little threat due to their low numbers this halts the production of First Gen Reploids as more researchers are brought on board to improve the design and make a better adaptation. Several years pass and the Second Gen Reploids are complete, having a significantly lower chance of going Maverick, being estimated to be a probability of 1 in 1,000,000. Despite the low probability Mavericks continue to be an issue for humanity going forward and due to the enhanced intelligence of the Second Gen Reploids and anti-Maverick group needed to be established.

The first Reploid created to counter Mavericks, known as Vile was constructed a few years after the first Second Gen Reploids started going Maverick. Equipped with advanced weaponry Vile proved excellent at handling the outbreaks of Mavericks and so more Anti-Maverick Reploids were constructed leading to early groups of Anti-Maverick Forces. A few years after Vile's creation, the first Commanding Reploid was created, intended to help organize and make the Anti-Maverick Units more effective in performing their function this Reploid known as Sigma would go on in the following years to create a group known as the Maverick Hunters the first officially recognized group whose primary operation was to deal with Maverick Outbreaks, Vile would join this group shortly after.

During this time of developing new, more combat ready Reploids, Dr. Cain and other researchers had continued searching the area around Dr. Light's Lab Ruins for other possible ancient technology that could prove useful. This however proved to become rapidly dangerous as Reploids who were sent to scout ahead would often become Maverick due to unknown circumstances. As such with a potentially dangerous threat in the desert, Sigma, Vile and several members of the Maverick Hunters set out to track down the source of the Mavericks. Clearing their way through the desert, Sigma and Vile happened upon another ancient laboratory, this one completely wrecked on the surface levels forcing the duo to explore deep into the underground, clearing a path in the process. Along the way according to logs, Sigma found strange oil-like substances on the surfaces that did not match anything he'd previously encountered. Eventually Sigma and Vile reached the bottom of the ruins where they found another pod similar to the one X was found in.

Attempting to access the pod, it opened and another early Reploid, this one crimson red in colour appeared, attacking Sigma and Vile on sight, although initially posing a serious threat, Vile was able to disarm the Reploid destroying its buster cannon in the process and Sigma was able to knock out the Reploid allowing them to bring it back to Dr. Cain to research. This Reploid, later dubbed, Zero proved incredibly useful for their research as, although possessing a simpler program than X was much easier to understand and helped further the creation of Second Gen Reploids. Roughly five years after his conflict in the ruins, Zero had been rebuilt and fitted with a new hand in place of his original buster cannon. Part of his programming was also rewritten to prevent Zero from attacking unexpectedly and Zero would, after proving his combat capabilities to Sigma be allowed to join the Maverick Hunters which he did.

Some time after Zero joining the Maverick Hunters, Vile began to display erratic behaviour, being more sadistic in dealing with Mavericks some believed that Vile might've been going Maverick himself. During a mission while they were out on patrol, Vile shot several Reploid hostages while dealing with a Maverick, according to Zero's report, Vile could've easily dealt with the Maverick and kept the hostages alive. When told to report back to base for an inspection, Vile instead disappeared destroying his tracking equipment in the process. Believed to have gone Maverick, Vile was labelled an outlaw and was the first instance of a Maverick Hunter of high notoriety going Maverick.

Two years after Vile's disappearance, X who'd up to this point been strictly an assitant to Dr. Cain and been serving as the primary subject of research into Dr. Light's technology found himself thrust into becoming a Maverick Hunter when their research center was attacked by a group of Mavericks. Forced to defend himself, X showed an aptitude for combat and extreme combat awareness making many consider him a possible prodigy for combat. As such, X quickly was enlisted under the Maverick Hunters where his combat skills were put to early field tests, despite the initial promises however X proved to be overly passive and hesitant when performing in active duty, as such he was assigned to a more support role aiding Sigma and Zero in their operations as well as helping with repairs.

A year later and after decades of research the new generation of Reploids had been created, capable of greater combat potential than before and also posessing attributes of Zero's programming, the Third Gen Reploids proved to be a key attribute in turning the tide against Mavericks as a single Third Gen Reploid could take out an entire squadron of Second Gen Mavericks. Several old Second Gen Reploids such as Sigma were also upgraded to Third Gen, receiving more advanced weaponry to boot. Due to the expanding scope of the Maverick Hunters, new Reploids were comissioned to serve a similar role to Sigma however would be for more local operations whereas Sigma still served as the leader of the group as a whole, these new commanding reploids; Signas and Colonel were created to test certain attributes of leadership through different programming. During the construction of Colonel, they attempted to emulate the combination of combat potential and measurement for empathy that X had shown, however the tests were unsuccessful, not wanting to scrap the empathetic programming, they reworked it into a new Reploid known as Iris.

The following year saw further advancements in Third Gen Reploids with two Reploids often considered the apex of their generation; Dynamo and Red being constructed that year who would be assigned to long distance missions under the Maverick Hunters. Dynamo formed a bit of a rivalry with Zero as the two would often compete with one another on missions to test their skills, in addition the duo formed a friendship with Iris who was primarily working with X at the time to support the Maverick Hunters. Red meanwhile was well-respected among the other Maverick Hunters, a balanced individual he displayed excellent analytical skills being able to govern several other Maverick Hunters during an active operation from the field himself, some even considered Red a possible candidate for succeeding Sigma as leader of the organization.

The year after however, an unfortunate incident that occurred during a seemingly routine operation of Maverick patrol where numerous Maverick Hunters who were in close proximity to one another were attacked simultaneously by explosives, this seemed to severly damage their programming causing them to go Maverick. According to the group they sought nothing less than the erradication of humans from the surrounding area and were going to establish a Reploid only nation. Sigma and Zero were sent out to handle the situation however Sigma lost contact shortly after and many feared he may have been taken out by the Mavericks, as such with most of the Maverick Hunters either already active or having gone Maverick, the group saw no other option than to send X in to help and put a stop to the Maverick Hunters who'd gone rogue.

Mega Man X1-X2[]

Mega Man X's plot is largely the same as the original, going to investigate the reports of Maverick activity in the Highway area, X runs into Vile who's returned after years where he was presumed dead. Vile promptly defeats X heavily by utilizing a powerful Ride Armour, however Zero comes in, destroying one of the Ride Armour's arms, freeing X and causing Vile to flee.

After confronting the various Maverick Hunters turn Mavericks, X learns from Zero what being a Maverick Hunter means to him as well as unearthing the discovery that Sigma was in fact behind the rebellion and had turned the other Maverick Hunters to his side years ago. X and Zero go to confront Sigma in his fortress, however on the way up Vile attacks them, Zero seeing no other option self-destructs leaving Vile weakened allowing X to defeat him however Zero seemingly perishes.

With nothing holding him back, X confronts Sigma and the two battle against one another with X coming out the victory despite Sigma's best efforts. Following the events, the remaining Mavericks are dealt with and things slowly return to normal however due to the significant blow dealt to the Maverick Hunters by Sigma's betrayal a new leader had to be chosen. As such, Colonel is promoted to leader of the organization and gradually new Maverick Hunters such as Double are constructed and added to the group to replace those lost in the rebellion.

Beyond the Maverick Hunters however, the realization of the danger a major Maverick rebellion could cause for humanity leads the world's governments to begin planning a new group to act as more of a military force against Mavericks as opposed to the more security work that groups like the Maverick Hunters do. As such the army known as Repliforce is established with a new highly advanced Third Gen Reploid known as General being assigned as its leader, using the template of the Colonel as the base for his design. Due to the establishment of the Repliforce, Maverick Hunter, Red decides to leave the group, joining Repliforce believing his skills will be more useful to them.

Also during the aftermath it was realized that a balanced of command would be needed and so Dr. Cain along with other researchers began two projects, the first to improve communications between Maverick Hunters and Support Teams known as the Navigator System which would lead to the creation of new Third Gen Reploids who were specifically designed to provide information and help to their Maverick Hunter counterparts, Iris was the base of this system and she became X's Navigator for further operations as the two had a history of friendship from when X was in the support division. The other project as the Scientific Reploid Taskforce (SRT) which was established to construct Reploids who would primarily seek out knowledge and information not only to expand their capacity in understanding various combat scenarios but also as a means of countering Mavericks in less direct ways.

From the SRT project, three notable Reploids were generated; Dr. Doppler a Reploid who was specifically designed by Dr. Cain himself and was set to work with the human researchers to find a cause for Reploids to go Maverick. The second was a Reploid known as Isoc, intended to help build the future generation of Reploids, Isoc was sent to the weapons research facility and tasked with developing ways to improve on the existing designs of Reploids. Lastly, Gate was constructed as a Reploid who was intended simply to gather as much knowledge as possible to give a better insight into dealgin with situations relating to Mavericks and other disasters as they arise.

While these projects were active however, leaks got out and rogue groups began constructing lower-quality Reploids which were commonly considered inferior knock-offs by most. Many of these knock-off Reploids suffered from extreme bouts of going Maverick and many would have to be put down due to the instability of their cores. A notable group that emerged among these knock-offs however were the X-Hunters a group of knock-off Reploids as well as repurposed old Maverick Hunters who seemed to be program with a hatred towards X, labelled as Mavericks the group was kept track of however they were difficult to track due to using advanced jamming technology.

Mega Man X2-X3[]

Going to confront the X-Hunters, X and Iris discover that the group has located parts of Zeros' body that were presumed lost following the ending of Mega Man X. Throughout the game X fights with the X-Hunters over the parts of Zero, the game's climax sees either X having successfully recovered the parts of Zero allowing him to be rebuilt, the X-Hunters having enough parts to create a new body for Zero but reprogramming him to fight X or neither side having enough and X fighting the X-Hunters for the remaining parts. It's revealed throughout the plot however that the X-Hunters have a benefactor who's been funnelling resources into their destructive acts, at the climax this benefactor is revealed to be Sigma, initially proclaiming to unkillable it's later revealed in the game through further dialogue between X and Sigma that the body he currently inhabits is separate from the one seen in Mega Man X1, explaining that he has surpassed the limitations of common Reploids and his mind exists across multiple bodies.

Despite his best efforts however, Sigma is once again defeated by X and the X-Hunters are shut down along with many of the Maverick Rebelllions spurned on by them. Concerned about the ominous statement that Sigma had told X about his multiple bodies, X  starts a search in hopes of finding the other bodies of Sigma. With Zero repaired later in the year he returns to the Maverick Hunters as an active member. Iris is assigned as Zero's Navigator to ensure he is back to normal while a new Navigator, Alia is assigned to X, having shown considerable aptitude for her duty, the duo work diligently to investigate the possible locations of Sigma's other bodies while Zero maintains active duty as a Maverick Hunter.

The following year, Dr. Doppler finally succeeds in his operations on avoiding Maverick outbreaks having seemingly discovered a work around for the issue through rewiring of the main programming of a Reploid. Initial tests are performed on the former Maverick, Vile and despite initial concerns the results are shown to be successful and so over the following year, Dr. Doppler's operations are carried out across former Mavericks returning them to a state of normality. While Mavericks continue to be an issue however this advancement in Anti-Maverick technology seems to be a breakthrough and many herald Dr. Doppler as a genius.

On the opposite side of things, concerns over the over-militarization of Reploids causes the opinion towards groups such as Repliforce who have a more military-like structure becomes noticeably more sour. A plan is set in motion to decrease the destructive capabilities of Repliforce in an attempt to make possible Maverick Outbreaks among their ranks less damaging to Humans and Reploids alike. Although this gets some backlash from within the group, General agrees to these terms and personally de-arms himself as a show of trust between Repliforce and the world's governments.

In the later parts of the year, something unexpected occurs as Reploids previously operated on by Dr. Doppler seem to go Maverick once again, although only temporary, this failure to properly prevent Reploids from going Maverick weighs down on Dr. Doppler as many begin to regard his professing of a cure to going Maverick to be overblown. Dr. Doppler becomes more secluded during this time eventually disappearing from the public eye for some time, however towards the tail end of the year, he resurfaces and much to the shock of many has gone Maverick himself, causing the Maverick Hunters, X and Zero to go an investigate they find not only has Dr. Doppler gone Maverick but many of the Reploids he'd operated  have done so as well, attempting to destroy humanity in the process. Concerned that it could mean the presence of another Sigma body, X and Zero head to the heart of the destruction to stop the Mavericks and take down Dr. Doppler.

Mega Man X3-X4[]

After the events of Mega Man X3 with the defeat of Dr. Doppler, the rate of Mavericks seems to go down in response as a result many Reploids who'd gone Maverick as a result of Dr. Doppler were reset to hopefully regain their former normality. During this mass reset it was discovered that a unique computer virus had infected many of the Reploids through the additional circuitry applied to them by Dr. Doppler, the virus, dubbed the Sigma Virus caused Reploids to go Maverick and it was discovered that it has the potential of being passed from Reploid to Reploid during combat. Studies into the Sigma Virus were conducted amongs those in the Maverick Hunters and Repliforce as concerns were that some of them may have been infected.

Later in the same year, Isoc's work on Reploids with improved combat potential was completed with the ultimate Third Gen Reploid, High Max being created who proved to be incredibly effective in combat, helping the Maverick Hunters in handling the Maverick outbreaks which occurred although High Max would often only be sent out on high risk missions due to the extensive time needed for his repairs after said missions due to his complex circuitry.

Towards the end of the year the Sky Lagoon Incident occurred, an event were a massive Mechaniloid, a more rudimentary robot that was a deviation of Second Gen Reploids attacked the floating city, causing it to crash onto the planets surface killing thousands. Due to the poor response at the time, many believed that Repliforce had failed in their mission to stop large Maverick assaults like this and so the opinion towards the military force became even more sour. In response to this, Colonel, the then leader of the Maverick Hunters and a close friend to General decided to leave the Maverick Hunters and join the Repliforce as a show to the world's governments that he would help General in fixing the issues in Repliforce. The Maverick Hunters eventually opted for a new leader, selecting Dynamo as the new leader due to the prowess he'd shown in the field although many believed the decision was a result of internal issues as many viewed Signas as the better candidate.

Following this change in the power structure, many began to view Repliforce under a more positive light as the effort Colonel put into improving the capabilities of the Repliforce without stepping on the previously established disarmament protocols proved effective however many still regarded the group as a threat to humanity and useless as a military force as Maverick outbreaks were still common place and without an active researcher like Dr. Doppler to focus efforts towards curing the issue of Mavericks or the Sigma Virus many saw the Repliforce as a group getting unjust resources.

Tensions would continue to mount over the rest of the year and well into the following year, Maverick Hunters and Repliforce Soldiers began to compete directly for handling Maverick outbreaks and often would lead to more destruction than prior as the latter group became more desparate to prove its worth to the world. The time apart had also strained Colonel's relationship with his former colleagues, Zero directly expressing concern that Colonel had lost sight of their original mission.

Mega Man X4-X5[]

After the defeat of Colonel, the betrayal of Iris and Double and the defeat of General, the Repliforce army is subdued by X, Zero and the other Maverick Hunters. Many of the Repliforce are examined for possible signs of the Sigma Virus however many like Red come back negative and are proven to have been unrelated to the Maverick attacks of Repliforce. For many Humans and Reploids alike though, the group's name held too many negative memories and so it was decided to be disbanded in the early months of the following year.

The World's governments, believing that a united force like the Repliforce proved to be too powerful and begin investing in smaller more national military groups that would protect individual nations and be kept under greater control instead of being able to act freely like Repliforce had. One notable group to spurn out of this is Red Alert which was heralded by former Maverick Hunter and Repliforce Soldier, Red. The new organization quickly gained massive popularity due to their openness with the public and would often keep out of the way of groups like the Maverick Hunters earning a general respect between both groups.

During the same year, due to a critical failure during an operation, the Maverick Hunters unfortunately lose several of their members during a bomb threat from a Maverick rebellion, being unable to properly deal with the emotions of losing several of his close comrades, Dynamo stepped down as leader of the Maverick Hunters and Signas replaced him in the role. Dynamo returned to the front lines of combat alongside now veteran Maverick Hunters, X and Zero. During this time, High Max's combat capabilities also improve as his rate to be repaired after missions is improved with advancing technologies, for the public High Max begins to become the most recognized member of the Maverick Hunters due to his extremely high success rate in putting down Mavericks.

In the later parts of the year, X and Zero adopt a new Navigator system as new Navigators who'd been under training from Signas are assigned to them forming what would later become known as the Three Branch Navigator Structure. The two new navigators; Palette & Layer would provide additional support to X and Zero providing specialized information allowing the information to be more precise and useful. Alia would also continue to serve as a Navigator for the duo, having taken over from Iris following her betrayal.

As the heat from Repliforce's rebellion had finally cooled off, many eyes turned to the Space Colonies which had been built in the years and had been damaged as a result of the Maverick rebellions, for many they viewed the Space Colonies as aging structures which were in dire need of repair. As such a large Reploid maintenace crew supported by the Maverick Hunters was sent to the various Space Colonies to repair them and upgrade them with new technology improving their efficiency, X was assigned to Space Colony Oceania, Zero was assigned to Space Colony America, High Max was assigned to Space Colony Africa and Dynamo was assigned to Space Colony Eurasia, each providing support in dealing with residual Maverick presences in the area and providing immediate support in the case of a Maverick rebellion among the maintenance workers.

By the following year much of the maintenance for the Space Colonies had been completed with only the oldest and largest of the space colonies, Eurasia left to repair. However during this time, Dynamo was found to frequently be losing communication with the Maverick Hunter Base and out of concern, Signas sent X and Zero to investigate what was going on. When arriving at Space Colony Eurasia the duo found the space colony had been completely taken over by Maverick Reploids and evidence of the presence of the Sigma Virus could be found throughout, fearing the potential that Dynamo had been taken out in the conflict or worse turned into a Maverick himself the duo head deeper into the space colony to investigate.

Mega Man X5-X6[]

At the climax of X5, Dynamo, having completely succumbed to the Sigma Virus, sets the Space Colony Eurasia on an intercept course with the planet, though able to break off some pieces of the space colony with the Enigma Cannon, roughly 75% of the Space Colony's mass still impacts with the planet leading to massive devastation. A near mass extinction ensues in the following months, with humans as well as many biological forms of life being forced into underground and underwater settlements. It's estimated that following the event, roughly 60% of the Earth's population was wiped out.

During the climax, Zero was lost in the escape sequence, protecting X by getting an escape pod out in time. Over the following year, humanity slowly rebuilds, not being able to return to the surface but rather through adapting to their new way of life. The remaining Reploids who still exist are rallied behind the Maverick Hunters and groups like Red Alert to help gradually fix the surface by cleaning up the chemical waste which had spread across the planet through acid rain during the first few months following the impact. During this time of rebuilding, Isoc presents his second successful design to the world's people, the Fourth Gen Reploid, technologically superior to Third Gen Reploids and capable of performing the actions necessary to help rebuild the surface so that humans and other animals can one day return. Among the early Fourth Gen Reploids is an experimental design known as Axl who shows an adaptation of the existing weapon adaptability skill but on a much more direct level.

During the recovery, the scientist Reploid, Gate who'd been constructed for the purposes of gathering knowledge became a bit of a leader among the Reploids as his research conducted in the field often helped identify methods for not only fixing the planet but also improving the methods by which the planet could be fixed as well as observing how the Eurasia Space Colony's impact was able to happen in spite of existing security measures. Alia was assigned as Gate's Navigator as he has little combat experience and needed to be kept alert in case of Maverick attacks as over time the Mavericks who'd survived the impact formed small bands of roving raiders who'd attack the Reploids on the surface.

As the years went on, Mega Man X continued to serve alongside High Max as some of the only veteran Maverick Hunters left on the entire planet, many regarded the two as rivals of sort as their incredible skill in combat and being some of the only Reploids to directly go after Raiders at their bases put them in a league above even more militaristic groups like Red Alert. As the technology of Reploids continued to advance thanks in part to the Fourth Gen Reploids, a new type of Scientific Reploid known as Lumine was created, intended to research the possibility of human settlement on other planets. Some Reploids believed that Gate and Isoc held some degree of a grudge against Lumine as his newer design made many regular people revere him as a saviour to them despite Gate and Isoc's actual efforts in the field. During a sturdy into the crash site itself, Gate happened upon a piece of technology which had survived the crash, a small motherboard, little to Gate's knowledge however, the motherboard's operating circuits were still active and he received a small shock which transferred the Sigma Virus into him.

Over time, Gate slowly stopped leaving his lab and cut contact with Alia all together, secluding himself in his lab to work on some sort of experiment that he refused to reveal to anyone except Isoc who had gained his trust. According to some Reploids, they saw a strange figure entering Gate's Lab from time to time who looked a bit like a Maverick Hunter. During this time, the excavation teams had finally been able to unearth the pieces of Zero, unlike his first sacrifice, Zero's state was much more dire as his primary memory drive had been damaged which would potentially leave him in a catatonic state even if he was repaired, concerned of the impact seeing Zero in this state might have on the Maverick Hunters, the excavation team instead opted to bring Zero to Red Alert instead. Fortunately the group had been rebuilding their lost resources over the years and had a suitable repair team that diligently worked to repair Zero, although it took considerable time, Zero was eventually repaired, roughly four years after the Eurasia Impact, despite having his primary memory drive in tact, it seemed that Zero's memories of what happened directly after he helped X onto the Escape Pod had been damaged beyond repair. For the time being, Zero was kept under the protection of Red Alert as he made a full recovery over the following year.

During this however, Gate who'd been slowly engulfed by the Sigma Virus had mutated its programming, adapting it with his own to create a new computer virus known as the Nightmare Virus which was even more ruthless and devastating to Reploids, able to inflict hallucinations and madness on its victims. Initial experiments proved successful for Gate and in time he would use rebuilt Maverick Hunters and Mavericks who his team had collected from impact sites across the planet in a scheme to take the planet over.

Mega Man X6-X7[]

As Gate leads a Maverick Rebellion against the remnants of humanity, Zero comes out of hiding, revealing himself to the public and helping in the fight against Gate and Isoc. At the climax of the plot, the once great High Max has been corrupted by the Nightmare Virus and much to X's remorse him and Zero defeat High Max and put a stop to Gate and Isoc before they can unleash a more virulent version of the Nightmare Virus. As time passes on, humanity recovers from the damage dealt and fortunately thanks to the ever approaching development of new Fourth Gen Reploids the projects to rebuild the Earth's surface are accelerated.

Shortly after the events of Mega Man X6, Zero leaves Red Alert on good terms, thanking them for helping him in such dire times and returns to the Maverick Hunters, believing it to be the place where he belongs. The early Fourth Gen Reploid, Axl meanwhile joins Red Alert, having a great deal of admiration for Red as a leader and proves his worth early on thanks to his adaptive abilities.

Several years pass and it seems that while the Mavericks have continued to be a threat for humanity and Reploids alike, the issue is finally beginning to resolve itself as the first humans are able to return to the surface after a decade spent under the surface. In the meantime Lumine's space project is seeing greater fruition as the first Jakob Elevator is established creating a high-speed access point between Earth and the first lunar colony. Around the same time, X decides to retire from active duty with the Maverick Hunters in hopes of uncovering a possible cure for the Nightmare Virus which still crops up from time to time, during his investigations over the next two years X unearths a piece of his own coding which seems to be capable of repelling Computer Viruses which had remained hidden and dormant until the Sigma Virus and later Nightmare Virus became more prevalent.

Although things had seemingly been getting back to a semblance of normality for humans, underneath the surface the organization, Red Alert had been suffering from considerable internal struggles, the group, now comprised of many Ex-Repliforce Members, Third Gen Combat Reploids and newer Fourth Gen Combat Reploids had been slowly collapsing under internal politics as the many different Reploids believed their potential was being stifled. Red under the pressure of all of this, sought out help from the group's research division, a risky proposal was given and perhaps due to the pressure or simply not fully considering the danger it would pose, Red permitted the proposal and the Research Division got to work constructing a new Reploid.

During this time, Axl happened to discover the plans that Red had agreed to and confronted his commander about this, however Red dismissed Axl's concerns and ordered Axl to go in for a psyche assessment, unwittingly Axl agreed not realizing that Red had ordered the research division to wipe Axl's memory of that knowledge. Despite the wipe however Axl still felt a degree of distrust towards Red due to his inability to recall his memories from that time period, in response Axl attempted to leave the group, however Red, wanting to use Axl's potential in the project attempted to stop him causing considerable structural damage in the area where the two fought. This caught the attention of the public and as Red attempted to track down Axl who'd gone into hiding, the Reploids he sent out caused severe damage and destruction resulting in the group being labelled as Maverick by the world's governments.

Despite being hunted, Axl sought out the Maverick Hunters and managed to find Zero during one of his operations, convincing him to take Axl into the group as a secret. Zero brough Axl back to the Maverick Hunters where Axl elaborated his concerns about Red Alert and was informed of the destruction they'd caused looking for him. Concerned for his safety, Axl asks Zero and X to help him stop Red Alert as he can't let them capture him but also can't let Red Alert destroy everything they've rebuilt.

Zero agrees to help and although X is hesitant at first, noting that he's been years out of practice he agrees to help Axl and the trio start a covert operation not officially recognized by the Maverick Hunters. In spite of this covertness however, Zero is quickly contacted by Layer who'd deduced what him, X and Axl were planning and informs the trio that Signas has agreed to the operation but is keeping it covert listing Zero as being away on a mission and X as retired still.

Mega Man X7-X8[]

With the collapse of Red Alert, much of humanity views the never ending conflict with Mavericks to be a lost cause and more attention it put towards Lumine's lunar colonization project with many of the world's governments removing resources from their armed Reploid forces and channeling it into the Lunar Colonization Project. For many Reploids this leads to them falling into disrepair with it being estimated that Pre-Fourth Gen Reploids are effectively extinct within two years due to disrepair and going Maverick.

Groups like the Maverick Hunters still are around, the renown of X and Zero as well as the rising popularity of Axl as a new generation of fighter has the group pivot from hunting down Mavericks primarily to assisting humanity in moving to the moon. Over the course of the next three years, the Maverick Hunters see little in the way of Maverick rebellions and the idea of disbanding the organization due to the relative peace is thrown around. With the first humans arriving on the moon, the population on the earth dwindles, however to the surprise of many, Lumine whom had been organizing the Lunar Colonization Project arrives on Earth bringing with him a new generation of Reploids, simply known as Neo-Reploids they're based on Axl's technology and prove to by highly adaptable and resistant to the Sigma Virus and Nightmare Virus thanks to X's Coding being discovered a few years prior.

The Neo-Reploids begin sweeping across the planet, helping the remaining humans who're either planning to move to the Moon or remaining on Earth in dealing with Mavericks as well as day-to-day issues. For many of these Neo-Reploids they notably lack any combat capabilities meaning they're a much lower threat if they do go Maverick. The success of the Neo-Reploids along with continued support from the Maverick Hunters. However the next year during an announcement to all of humanity, Lumine is suddenly kidnapped on-stage by a resurrected Vile, despite the best efforts of the Maverick Hunters, they are unable to track down Vile or Lumine's location and to the further shock of many, Sigma, seemingly back from the dead proclaims his resurrection having taken over one of the Jakob Elevators and in the process declaring his war to take control of Earth.

The large army that the resurrected Sigma had amassed proves to be a daunting threat to the remnants of humanity on Earth and so X, Zero and Axl are sent in to combat once more to deal with Sigma's forces and hopefully recover Lumine who's knowledge on the Lunar Colonization Project is critical to its success.

Post-Mega Man X8[]

At the climax of Mega Man X8 it is revealed that the Sigma who appeared to be controlling everything was in fact merely a puppet created by Lumine, infected with the Nightmare Virus several years prior, he'd trapped many of the humans brought up to the moon with the intention to take over the Earth in a significantly weakened state. After defeating Lumine, many of the Neo-Reploids return to normal as many were following the orders they were given.

Over time the population gradually return to Earth, the Lunar Bases more so being used for research as there was simply never much put towards residential areas on the bases. Over time the population of Humans and Reploids continue to co-exist in relative peace, the general lack of major Maverick Rebellions seeming to have allowed for humanity to recover.

Over the decades leading into the 23rd Century, the population began to boom again as the quality of life had returned to how it had been around the times of X4. For many the continued threat of the Mavericks became an ever omni-present issue, though many attempted to solve the problem most attempts resulted in failure or at worst a minor Maverick Rebellion.

For this the world's governments came together and began Project Omega a plan that would have scientists both Human and Reploid, across the world work together on various projects to solve the Maverick issue, for many this sparked a golden age of technological growth. The previous untapped field of human cybernetics had been blown completely open by this time with humans augmenting their bodies allowing them to live for much longer periods of time meanwhile the quality of Neo-Reploids improved with newer models looking more and more human.

The degree to which the change had occurred left older Reploids like X, Zero and Axl falling behind as their once legendary combat prowess now suffered limitations and so although hesitant X and Zero decided to willingly upgrade their physical bodies having their consciousnesses and main programming moved to newer more adaptable bodies. For Axl however that was a change he was not willing to make, over the remaining decades of his life, Axl proved in spite of his outdated design that he was still a capable fighter and eventually during a ruthless Maverick Outbreak involving the new Golem-Class Mechaniloids Axl fell in battle, too damaged to be repaired.

As time would pass on the Navigator System also changed becoming more interconnected and many of the older Navigators were phased out, either moved to active duty or upgraded into the interconnected sphere of information. Leaders like Signas also saw themselves as being made redundant and so most joined the hunters themselves on the battlefield. A prominent scientist would rise in this time of perpetual smaller conflicts, known as Dr. Weil he was heralded as a genius in robotics, said to be up there with Dr. Light and Dr. Cain before him. Dr. Weil created what would become known as the ultimate Reploid, Omega named after the project itself. Omega proved to be a master of combat, unmatched by all his incredible skill with the energy saber saw many to compare him to Zero as the two become fierce rivals in spite of how little Omega actually spoke.

While Dr. Weil had been focused on the combat side of handling Mavericks other scientists had looked at specifically fixing the issue of Mavericks as the Sigma Virus, long thought to have gone extinct was found to have in fact mutated over time, adapting to the ever improving technology of Reploids. As such these scientists, whose names were lost to history created what was known as the Mother Elf, alongside Reploids and Mechaniloids a new type of robot had become more advanced and capable dubbed Elf (Electronic Living Virtualoid) they are sentient computer programs, without a physical body and thus immune to the effects of the Sigma Virus, many initially were used simply for recreational purposes such as entertainment however the Mother Elf was specifically created to combat the Sigma Virus, creating what was known as the Infinity Equation it would continuously generate an ever more complex equation for the Sigma Virus to solve making it impossible for the Virus to do anything and would eventually cause the virus to suffer a critical error, destroying itself.

The Mother Elf was dispersed into the Navigator Sphere of Information (NSI) where it was able to destroy many instances of the Sigma Virus within the system, leading to a total purge helping many Reploids to recover. For many however this was not enough as many Reploids when going Maverick would become disconnected from the NSI. In response to this predicament, Dr. Weil proposed a new solution known as Project Elpizo which would create a web of control by having one Reploid merge directly with the Mother Elf and all others connected through the NSI would act as conduits, unleashing constant broadcast signals which would be automatically picked up by any Mavericks forcing the Mother Elf's control into them.

For many Reploids the idea of being controlled was an unappealing one and the project received significant backlash from the populace. Despite this however the ever looming threat of Mavericks became increasingly more severe, every day hundreds of Reploids would be sent out into battle against Mavericks coming back severely damaged or to the point of no repair. The Maverick War never seemed to end and for many the endless waves of Mavericks became exhausting on the mind, many pondered trying to start up the Lunar Project again or migrating humans to the Space Colonies which were still operational, however the focus towards Project Omega was absolute and determined to see an end to the conflict, Project Elpizo became more popular, first with the humans and then more so with the Reploids, many of whom lost their friends and colleagues in the endless war.

However as the Mother Elf was bring brought out to be merged with Omega who had been deemed by Dr. Weil as the perfect candidate, a leak of information got out, rapidly spreading across the NSI, it revealed Dr. Weil to have been funding and orchestrating many of the Maverick Outbreaks, prolonging the war. To many this betrayal suddenly shifted the tide of conflict, Dr. Weil was hunted down, fortunately escaping thanks to Omega, the two went into hiding, however what many didn't realize was that the leak was in fact planned from the beginning, hidden beneath the leak itself was a computer virus, though small and without adaptability it was able to brute force its way into the Mother Elf's inner control, corrupting her data directly rather than taking control. The virus was quickly wiped from the NSI during its next routine scan however the damage was already done, the Mother Elf, now dubbed the Dark Elf attempted to assert direct control over the Reploids, however fortunately many were able to break free of its control thanks in part to the various Navigators who'd become linked to the system, able to cut the programming tethers between the Mother Elf and the Reploids. The Dark Elf was contained for the time being however the broken tethers manifested into new Elfs, the Baby Elves, some suffered from the same programming fault as the Dark Elf while others retained the original programming of the Mother Elf, many Reploids went Maverick as a result of losing control to the Dark Baby Elves.

As the years went on, this new war, the Elf Wars raged on as fierce combatants such as X, Zero and Signas would frequently engage with entire armies of Mavericks on their own. The tide of battle gradually shifted in the Maverick Hunters favour however as the lack of new Dark Baby Elves meant that more and more Reploids were able to join the Maverick Hunters and other similar groups in the fight against Dr. Weil and Omega. During the twilight years of the Elf Wars, Dr. Weil and Omega made their first physical appearance in over three decades, making a direct attack of the Maverick Hunter HQ where the Dark Elf was being contained, the push was surprisingly effective with many Maverick Hunters being slaughtered in the process. As Omega neared closer and closer to the Dark Elf the Maverick Hunters fell one by one in his path, in the containment room X, Zero and Signas confronted Omega and Dr. Weil. Omega immediately attacked, fighting with an unbridled rage as the trio of Maverick Hunters held their ground, although slowly but surely Omega's sheer skill and raw power with his energy saber overwhelmed all three of them, as a last ditch effort Signas attacked Omega from behind, grabbing and restraining his limbs ordering X to shoot Omega to stop him, as X did so however, Dr. Weil shot Signas multiple times with a small weapon he'd concealed, as Signas lost his grip, Omega blocked X's attacks causing a cloud of smoke, as Omega cleared the smoke from his gaze he was greeted with the sight of Zero piercing his own energy saber through Omega's head, dealing a critical strike which caused Omega to fall, completely lifeless. X promptly shot the weapon out of Weil's hand and the duo were able to finally arrest Weil however mourned over the loss of Signas who'd been struck in critical areas damaging his primary circuits.

As a result of their actions, the remains of Omega which were identified to be beyond anything anyone could've expected were sent onto an orbital station known as the Forbidden Ark where they would remain in orbit around Earth. Dr. Weil meanwhile faced a tribunal for his actions, cybernetically altered he was left with the constant memories of his defeat and was condemned to wander the wastelands the war had created as a result of his actions. For many X and Zero were heralded as the great saviours of humanity however both held remorse over the great loss of life and for Zero especially he believed that many of the actions he had taken during the conflict were immoral as such he sealed himself away, intending to only return should all other options fail. X meanwhile ever hopeful of the future, established the city of Neo Arcadia, shifting his focus away from direct conflict he brought the Maverick Hunters on as the city's primary defence and the city itself became known as a beacon for humanity as most of the world's population flocked toe the city as the city grew ever larger. Having deep regrets over the Elf Wars however, X had the knowledge of Dr. Weil and Omega purged from historical texts and over the generations humanity itself would forget about the Human and Reploid who brought the world to the brink of annihilation.

Characters[]

Character Description
Megaman X Official
Mega Man X
One of the main protagonists of the Mega Man X series, the namesake Mega Man X is a successor to the original Mega Man, constructed by Dr. Light, Mega Man X is capable of a much greater degree of decision making, making him in many ways far beyond the technology that existed when he was created. X is often described as calmer and more thoughtful in contrast to his friend and rival, Zero, often wondering about the nature of the battles he engages in, X is still however a dutiful fighter believing that regardless of how dire the circumstances he must stand against injustice.
X2 Zero
Zero
One of the main protagonists of the Mega Man X series and initially a role model for X, Zero was built by Dr. Wily, originally intended for evil by being created with what would become known as the Zero Virus however after an initial conflict after his activation, the virus was purged from Zero's programming. Often eager to get into battle, Zero is often very vocal to others about his thoughts on them and sometimes lacks a filter on his thoughts being headstrong. Despite this however, Zero proves repeatedly throughout the series his determination and bravery to oppose Maverick threats.
Axl Spirit
Axl
Introduced as a main protagonist in Mega Man X7 although appearing in the plot between Mega Man X5 and X6, Axl is part of a new generation of Reploids and has many new advancements over his predecessors. Although often referred to as a rookie by others, Axl is often overly determined to prove his worth taking on extremely dangerous assignments earning him notoriety among the groups he was a part of for being incredibly capable. Perhaps Axl's most defining feature is his Copy Shot which allows him to take on attributes of the enemies he faces and use those attributes agains them.
Sigma Spirit
Sigma
The main antagonist of the series in a sense, Sigma was once the leader of the Maverick Hunters however when infected with the Zero Virus which would later go on to mutate within Sigma into the Sigma Virus. Sigma is a ruthless leader who cares little for the well-being of his comrades and is unrelenting in his punishment for failure, many towards the later parts of the series even revere Sigma as a fearful tyrant. Due to his connection with the Sigma Virus, Sigma is often capable of escaping death by creating back-up bodies, transferring his memories from each encounter with X and Zero to become more dangerous.
DrCainMMX
Dr. Cain
A brilliant scientist for his era, many consider Dr. Cain to be the father of all Reploids as by utilizing the basis of X's design he was able to turn what was effectively a novel prototype concept into a fully-fledged new evolution for robotics. Dr. Cain is described as wise and often lost in his thoughts, often attempting to seek ways to improve life for robots believing that he is in part responsible for the Maverick outbreaks which have occurred from the Reploids that were created from his breakthroughs.
Vile RMXDiVEH
Vile
One of the first Maverick Hunters and considered a legend in his time, Vile is more notably known throughout the series as a ruthless killing machine of a Maverick who takes great pleasure in the suffering and misery he can inflict upon others. Many believe that Vile had always been that way and it was just a matter of something pushing him over the edge from a Maverick Hunter to a Maverick. Although he was destroyed in Mega Man X, Vile returned in X3 and X8, it's unknown whether Vile's memories were transferred between bodies however he does maintain an intense hatred of other Reploids.
ColonelMMX4
Colonel
The second leader of the Maverick Hunters, Colonel is a skilled tactician having considerable experience under his belt from his time as a field operative. Many within the group respect Colonel as his wisdom and calm demeanour contrast significantly with his predecessor Sigma. Perhaps his most defining trait however is his unwavering loyalty and sense of honour, which is what attracted him to joining Repliforce alongside the issues that group was suffering from at the time.
IrisMMX4
Iris
Iris is a navigator who helped X and Zero during their early missions, originally Iris and the Colonel were intended as one Reploid who'd have the sense of duty of the former and the more advanced understanding of emotions and decisions of the latter, as such Iris is often very friendly to those she works with and develops a strong bond particularly with Zero.
Signas
Signas
The fourth leader of the Maverick Hunters, Signas is second only to Sigma in terms of his service as leader by the events of X8, for many Signas was a remarkable soldier and although he lacked the sense of duty that Colonel would often instil or the more assertive directions of Sigma he was seen as more of a middle ground, willing to adapt to situations when the circumstances would change and be much more willing to accept losses and retreats. Signas also despite becoming the leader of the Maverick Hunters still remained as an active field operative, going out on missions as he believed it helped keep his ability to make quick decisions sharpened.
DoubleMMX4
Double
A rookie Maverick Hunter who joined the group shortly after the events of X2, Double is a bit aloof as far as Maverick Hunters go, not exceptional in any aspect although for some Double's greatest talent is his extreme luck. For whatever reason, Double is considered by many to be a good luck charm as when he's on the battlefield things seem to go in favour of the Maverick Hunters who're with him. Some believe that there is a guardian spirit watching over Double that protects him in some manner.
X5Dynamo
Dynamo
A remarkably talented Maverick Hunter, Dynamo is a cocky individual who shows a great deal of pride in his work although is also a bit of a show-off, preferring stylish and visually impressive types of attacks over more practical ones. Some consider Dynamo as the poster child for a new generation of Maverick Hunters as his more charismatic personality is much more endearing to Humans and other Reploids. Dynamo's signature weapon of choice is his Energy Whip a powerful long range variant of the Energy Saber.
Red X7
Red
Part of the same line as Dynamo, Red is a bit of an interesting individual, quite friendly and also displaying many qualities of leadership it's believed he was designed as the union between the more combat-orientated Maverick Hunters and the more task focused Maverick Hunter Leaders. He has a penchant for having a seemingly emotionless state of mind while in combat as many Mavericks he's taken down have described him as a nightmare of a hunter due to his relentlessness and cold expression-less face, this however seems to merely be a facade he uses during combat as when interacting with the public and other Maverick Hunters he's often described as very warm and kind-hearted often seeking to bring out the best in his colleagues.
DrDoppler X3
Dr. Doppler
One of several science-orientated Reploids built, Dr. Doppler's primary goal was to find the cause for Reploids to go Maverick, a bit of an eccentric individual he was personally programmed by Dr. Cain and so shares many of the strange quips that his creator has. Dr. Doppler has been described as a bit quirky as well, having a rather jovial personality although expressing it through strange mannerisms. Perhaps however most notably is Dr. Doppler's lack of sense of space as many of the Reploids he'd interacted with by observing their behavioural circuits described him as a probing individual.
Gate
Gate
Gate, also known as the Great Seeker of Knowledge was a science-orientated Reploid constructed with the purpose to gather information. According to Gate himself, this desire for information manifests itself in an inexplicable focus on a singular goal when new information presents itself. To many Gate is a very knowledgeable, yet also humble individual, never utilizing his vast intellect for a sense of superiority and was often eager to learn much about others and so focused on finding Humans and Reploids alike who had a similar desire to attain knowledge.
Isoc X6
Isoc
Isoc is a science-orientated Reploid who was also installed with the combat data of numerous former Maverick Hunters. Isoc's goal in life was to created the new generations of Reploids who'd be able to protect humanity while also furthering the endeavour to bring Reploid-kind and mankind closer together. Isoc is a bit of a social hermit when described by others, he often becomes deeply involved in his work and has been known to even run out of energy and needs to be hauled back to a charging station from time to time. Isoc has himself expressed disappointment in his inability to work longer believing it to a limitation that he requires to truly understand what it is to be alive.
General X4
General
Leader of the Repliforce, General is one of the largest humanoid Reploids ever created, this was to allow for one of the most advanced set of programming at the time to ever be implemented, the non-centralized design allowed multiple computers to operate simultaneously allowing the General to come to quick and logical decisions extremely quickly, in essence having the decision making capabilities of multiple reploids giving him a function similar to that of the Three Judge system. General was built based on the existing designs for Colonel's original design however was improved upon allowing for the multi-layered processing that failed to work with Colonel. In many aspects General is righteous and noble and is heavily respected by those within the Repliforce, he is stern with his judgement and orders but is not overly forceful like Sigma had been prior to going Maverick.
Elemental Story Monster 2973
Alia
One of the first Reploids built specifically for the then new Navigator System, Alia is a highly intelligent individual, having a deep almost encyclopedic knowledge of the adversaries that X faces. Her knowledge also stems from being directly in contact with the main manufacturing firms of Reploids and so has personal knowledge of the various attributes of the Reploids X is up against. Personality-wise Alia is a rather confident individual, often stating her opinion and advice with an air of certainty and sometimes will even actively argues alongside X against their enemies.
Pallette
Pallette
One of the more recent Navigator-style Reploids, Pallette was developed with specialized scanning equipment which allows for her to perform long-range scans before missions giving a detailed and informed layout of conflict areas including being able to identify possible alternate routes of entry with a high success rate. Pallette's personality is rather childish compared to previous Navigators with her often butting heads with X, Zero and especially Axl over trivial matters irrelevant to the mission, she's also expressed interest in being an on the ground Maverick Hunter although according to interactions with Zero her skill at aiming is ironically, horrible.
Layer
Layer
One of the more recent Navigator-style Reploids, Layer was developed with an advanced combat chip allowing her to easily identify enemy weak points as well as even in some instances hack into an enemy's programming via wireless connection through the Maverick Hunter she's assigned to and weaken the target/s. Layer has a very calm demeanour and is a bit hard for the Maverick Hunters to talk to as she tends to talk very little especially compared to Pallette, she does admit that she thinks Axl acts too much like a child and thinks it's funny that Pallette and him constantly argue, she also seems to hold a degree of respect for X and Zero due to the degree to which they're willing to go to protect Humans and Reploids.
High Max X6
High Max
Considered the apex of Reploid design particularly in terms of combat potential, High Max is an incredibly powerful Reploid who is shown to be nigh unstoppable when deployed on the field. Despite this he is rarely deployed due to the time it takes for his repairs between operations. Not much is known as High Max personally as to make space for his advanced combat awareness system he has a significantly suppressed emotional chip which makes him rather silent, this is not at a lack of intelligence however as when High Max tends to speak he does so in a very efficient means which comes off quite robotic as a result of him focusing solely on relaying information.
Lumine X8
Lumine
Considered the pinnacle of Reploid design for his time, Lumine was the only known science-orientated Fourth Gen Reploid and possesses an incredible processor for information making him effectively unmatched in terms of comprehending complex situations. Lumine was tasked with devising the means by which humans could travel and colonize the Moon as the situation on Earth had become significantly unfavourable as a result of the ongoing Maverick Wars. Lumine is shown to be a very kind-hearted individual, having a strong sense of empathy that helps him understand the plight to a much greater degree than previous reploids with similar goals. It is notable that Lumine prefers the company of Humans over other Reploids in spite of no such preference existing in his programming, Lumine himself admits this stems from a fascination he has with Humans that he simply lacks with Reploids.

Challenge Levels[]

Initially appearing as Challenge Bosses in the Mega Man X Legacy Collection, Challenge Levels are an evolution of that concept, expanding on them by not only giving the player the challenge of fighting returning bosses but also creating entirely new levels unique to this game which are intended to test players who've mastered the levels from the main games.
