Fantendo Card Cataclysm

Fantendo's Card Cataclysm is a turn-based role-playing strategy game developed Button Studios, released on August 13th 2020 on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, Nymbus and Steam. The game features as a crossover between many Fantendo characters from many different universes.

Plot[]

In the Fantendoverse, an dark and malicious sorcerer named The Cardmaster transforms many of Fantendo’s characters into playing cards with help from his assistant, Baron Von Flamefright, allowing him to take over and destroy the universe along with the help of several Fantendoverse villains. However, several heroes across the universe survive the attack, and band together to stand up against The Cardmaster.

Among the survivors are Unten and Zerita, who, after witnessing Mioda being turned into a card, headed to find Doomulus Grime, assuming he was responsible for the attack. They find Grime and prepare to fight him, however, The Cardmaster appears just before they do so, claiming his responsibility for the incident and leaving a clone of himself to fight the group. Unten and Zerita begrudgingly make a truce with Doomulus Grime to defeat The Cardmaster's clone. After doing so, they are approached by Captain Cashew, a pilot driving a large floating airship called the Great Galleon. He explains what The Cardmaster has done, and invites the three heroes to join him on a quest to rescue all of the heroes turned into cards and defeat The Cardmaster once and for all.

After travelling throughout the world's dungeons and gathering Hero Cards, fighting many bosses along the way such as The Cardmaster's servant, Baron von Flamefright, Captain Cashew takes the heroes to The Cardmaster's Lair, a fortified castle in the mountains. It's here Cashew reveals that The Cardmaster is in fact his brother, Casimir Cataan, and believes reuniting with him may cause him to undo his attempt at destroying the world.

Eventually they reach the castle's inner sanctum, where The Cardmaster reveals his black hole spell - a black hole that will grow and engulf the entire Fantendoverse. The heroes fight him, and Cashew attempts to talk him out of his plan, but The Cardmaster simply denies Cashew's claim to be his brother, believing that his brother died long ago and his plot to destroy the universe will avenge him. However, The Cardmaster quickly realises that Cashew is in fact correct, and prepares to undo the black hole spell to put and end to his plot.

At this moment, Baron steps in and prevents The Cardmaster from doing so, declaring that the universe is ugly and should be destroyed anyway. Absorbing the power of the black hole spell, Baron transforms into his true form, the Flamefright Phantom, to kill the heroes once and for all. However, due to the combined efforts of the heroes and The Cardmaster, Baron is defeated and falls into the black hole, causing both him and the spell to vanish.

After the credits, The Cardmaster takes on a new appearance, changing back to his original name of Casimir. He departs with Cashew to travel the universe together.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay of Fantendo’s Card Cataclysm is mostly inspired by games such as Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Mario & Luigi and several others, but revolves around collecting Hero Cards that contain playable characters to use in battle.

Exploration[]

While exploring the world, players can take control of any playable character they have obtained in Hero Cards thus far, exploring dungeons to progress through the story. While exploring, players can run into enemies, and doing so takes them into a turn-based battle against the foe, and potentially several others, akin to the Mario & Luigi games. Additionally players are able to find Support Cards which can be used either inside or outside of battle to heal units, strengthen them mid-battle, weaken enemies, and many more.

Every dungeon the player explores is comprised of three zones. The first zone is typically the easiest, and the third is usually the most difficult and has the most enemies, including a boss fight at the end. All dungeons also have playable characters within them, some of whom can be found and spoken to in-the-flesh after they survived the Cardmaster’s attack, and others who have been trapped within Curse Cards and must be restored before they can join the player.

While not exploring dungeons, the player is able to explore and utilise the hub world, The Great Galleon, a large flying airship in which the characters reside. The Great Galleon features numerous services such as:

  • The Helm, where players can take control of the ship to visit previously-visited dungeons or travel to new ones.
  • Shops, where players can buy Support Cards.
  • Fortune Tents, where players can restore Curse Cards to Hero Cards, freeing the character trapped inside.
  • Craft Tents, where players can repair cards that were torn in battle.
  • Internet Cafés, where players can connect to the internet to play against other players.
  • The Engine Room, where players can modify game settings.

Combat[]

Battles are based off a speed system, in which whoever has the fastest speed between the player and their enemy will move first, similarly to the Pokémon games. During battle, the player is able to use any playable units they have acquired throughout the game so far, which are made available through the form of cards. objective of battles is to deplete all enemies’ health to zero.

During the player’s turn, the player may select one of their cards to summon the character it represents. Then, the character can use one of several attacks.

  • Normal Attacks have an unlimited amount of uses, however they tend to be very basic attacks with no added benefits and not particularly high power. There is only one type of normal attack, however each character has a different variation of it which changes the color and damage of the attack.
  • Special Attacks have a limited number of uses per battle. As a result they tend to be more powerful than Normal Attacks and have added affects such as boosting the team’s stats. Every character has a unique Special Attack.
  • Group Attacks can be executed once the player has defeated a certain amount of foes within a recent timeframe, and they are carried out using two or more characters that have access to the same Group Attack. These are very powerful attacks that surpass the strength of both Normal and Special Attacks. Only 8 different Group Attacks exist in the game.

Alternatively, players can use a Support Card, however opting to doing so ends the player’s turn immediately and prevents them from attacking.

Enemies all have two attacks that they can use, however unlike the player, they cannot use Group Attacks. Like enemies, the player’s units also have HP, and when it is fully depleted, the Hero Card is torn, meaning the character it represents cannot be used until the card is repaired at the Great Galleon’s Craft Tent. If all of the player’s cards are torn up, they will get a Game Over and be forced to restart from the Great Galleon, reversing all progress made in that dungeon. However, this only really happens early in the game when the player doesn’t have that many Hero Cards in their arsenal.

During the story, the player will also encounter boss enemies, which are much stronger and more powerful than regular enemies. Additionally, they are freely able to summon regular enemies during battle.

Once a dungeon's boss has been completed, players are able to return to that dungeon and re-fight enemies, with an added catch that enemies in completed dungeons have a 5% chance to join the player in the form of an Enemy Card once defeated. This allows the player to use the enemy alongside their Hero Cards in other battles, although Enemy Cards are generally weaker than Hero Cards.

Trivia[]

  • Fantendo’s Card Cataclysm was mainly created by the creator as an excuse to draw other Fantendo characters.
  • Pickpocket and Widget were originally intended to be the same character, however they were later separated into two different ones because, fuck it why not.
  • The project originally started out as a trading card game, however the creator couldn’t think of any ideas that would make the rules work out, so he changed it to a turn-based RPG combining elements of previously scrapped RPG projects.
  • All of the character artworks were made for this project, with a few exceptions.
    • Gary's art is a modified version of an artwork submitted to Faz for Fantendo's Secret Santa 2019.
    • Claricat, Ania and Agustaclove's arts were created beforehand as fan arts.
    • Elek-Trode's art is a modified version of a sketch drawn for one of Elek-Trode's alternate costumes in Heirs to the Wrath - Super Ultra Arcade Edition.
    • Tara's art is identical to her art from her debut game, STING.
  • There are several characters that debuted in this game, those being:
  • The Block and Reversal support cards are a reference to the popular card game, UNO.
  • Major inspirations to this project include Nintendo & Fantendo Play: Dodgeball! and Fantendo Smash Bros. Something. Be sure to check 'em out if you haven't already!
  • Fantendo's Card Cataclysm was one of the final non-canon crossover projects of the New Fantendoverse before it was ended by the creator's departure from Fantendo.
  • A sequel was once planned for Fantendo's Card Cataclysm, but the idea was scrapped fairly early in development. Most of the planned roster can be viewed here.
