Super Smash Bros. Versus (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ対 Dai rantō Smash Brothers Tai, Great Melee Smash Bros. Versus in Japan) also often shortened to SSBVS or Versus is a fighting game developed by Sora Ltd., HAL Laboratory and Bandai Namco Games and is published by Nintendo for the next gen Nintendo console. It is the fifth game (sixth if 3DS and Wii U are counted serpate) in the series.

Like in previous games in the series, Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game in which up to four players use various attacks, techniques, and items to deal damage to their opponents. The aim of the game is for players to increase their opponents' damage percentage, causing them to fly back further when attacked, and knock them out of the playing field. Returning items first introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl include the Smash Ball, which allows characters to perform powerful Final Smash attacks, and Assist Trophies, which summon various other video game characters onto the field to attack opponents or help in other ways. And introduced back in he first game, Poké Ball Pokémon that help its summoner. Like its predecessors, Super Smash Bros. features collectible in-game trophies based on characters or items seen in various Nintendo or third-party games. Each stage features an alternate Omega form, which replaces the stage's layout with a flat surface and removes all stage hazards and items.

The fourth installment in the series introduces the ability to customize both existing characters and Mii Fighters, altering their movesets and giving them unique power-ups. The game supports local and online multiplayer. Whereas local and online matches with friends have fully customizable rules, online matches with strangers are divided into two modes: "For Fun" and "For Glory." For Fun features random stages and items, with Smash matches only and Omega stages omitted, while For Glory limits matches to Omega stages with no items and the option for 1-on-1 battles for more tournament-style gameplay. Customized characters, Mii Fighters, and Amiibos cannot be used in online matches against strangers.

Versus Mode

Versus Mode is a multiplayer mode that enables players or computer players to fight against each other or in a variety of settings. Versus mode appears in all Super Smash Bros. games. The characters can participate in a variety of battles, including Free-for-alls and team battles. The players can also set the rules for the battle including the amount of time, the amount of stock, the items that can be used, handicaps, and the stage that the battle will take place on. The players can also choose settings for the computer players including computer players' levels. Some of these features, however, have to be unlocked in order for them to be used.

8-Player Smash

A special mode of Versus in which it is able to battle with eight characters at the same time. The only perk to this mode is that only certain stages can be chosen to fight on, preventing from fighting on a stage that is too small for eight players.

Switch Mode

In this special mode, players fight with stocks as default, but only can go up to five stocks in a battle. For each stock the player has to select a different character. During the fight everything acts the same as in a regular versus battle, the only difference is that a new input has been added that let's you switch between the characters. One has a short reloading time after characters have been switched, preventing the players from keep switching the entire time.

There are three versions of this mode. You can either play 3 vs. 3, 5 vs. 5 or 3 vs. 3 with 2 additional assist trophies. In the later you can select three characters as stocks and additionally two assist trophies that you can activate in battle. They both count as a stock as well, thus when they are defeated the opponent gets an additional point. When all your normal stocks are gone, the assist trophies will automatically enter the battlefield.

Expand this to see the list of assist trophies that can be selected for this mode:

Smash Down

Smashdown renders the fighters selected in a given battle unavailable for use in following battles, forcing players to select a different fighter with every match they play.

Classic Mode

Classic Mode is a mode in which the player fought in a predetermined order: the player would always fight a specific character at a certain stage in a fixed order under static conditions. The player will be able to chose a path into which direction they are going and will eventually reach their Final Destination. The path will branch out so they will be able to choose which way they are heading. Each level is based on a specific theme of the series. Inbetween the stages there will be levels like Target Smash and Race-to-the-Finish.

If the player loses all their stock, they are brought to the Continue screen with a "Yes" or "No" answer to the Announcer's question "Continue?" Some points and coins - the number of which varies depending on the difficulty level - and half the points are lost if "Yes" is chosen, but a "GAME OVER" is shown if "No" is chosen or if the player does not have the required amount of coins.

You have 2 stocks for every battle, aside from the mini-games inbetween of course. The opponent(s) and stage are random at each time, however the order of the fight conditions are the same.

All-Star Mode

All-Star Mode  is a gameplay mode, that pits the player against every playable character in the game. The character chosen has only one stock in this mode. In both games, unlike previous games it is playable from the start because of the sheer amount of characters and even is a way to unlock new characters. Because of the large cast this time around you'll fight the characters in waves in order of when they were introduced into the series, from earliest to latest.

You're able to play in co-op which this time will unlock both their All-Star spirits. This time around you're also able to save between battles and continue at a later moment. IF you die, you will not respawn to your latest safe point.

Story Mode

See: Super Smash Bros. Versus/Story

A mysterious entity felt that the border between all the Nintendo universes were very tiny and that he could break the walls inbetween. The person mashed up all the universes into one big dimension and trapped its heroes inside of it, who have to fight each other in order to survive. The villains on the other hand have started their own league, although that also doesn't go that well.

Tower Smash

A new and special mode in which you select five character who, together, enter the tower in order to reach the treasure locked at the top. There are a total of 70 floors. The first floor counts as a check-point, following that are 8 floors in which the player has to fight against another character. The floor after that consists out of three rooms, behind each of them is another boss character. After defeating them you advance to the next checkpoint floor and repeat. At the top you'll always fight Master Core and will obtain the treasure that he protected afterwards.

Event Matches return from previous installments of the franchise. Like before, players must complete various challenges, some of which involve fighting under unique circumstances. There are a total of 64 Events.

Multi-Man Mode

Multi-Man mode is a single-player mode which appears in the game. They challenge the player to defeat as many opponents as possible in a six-player battle, under various pretenses, before falling from the stage or self-destructing, themselves. Your opponents are the Mii's that are directly taken from your Mii Channel and friends on your console. During a Multi-Man Brawl, every 25th character spawned is a character, rather than an alloy.Multi-Man Mode can be played up to two players, and the game's compatibility with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection allowed one to play the mode online.

Home-Run Contest

The Home-Run Contest is a minigame in which the player(s) must knock a Sandbag as far as possible, usually with the Home-Run Bat given. The player has 10 seconds to rack up damage to lengthen the home-run. The most effective technique for dealing much damage very quickly is known as bat dropping.

The player starts on a platform with a Sandbag in the center, and the character about 1/3 of the way from the left of the platform facing right. Slightly to the left is a bat, which can be used to hit the bag extremely far. Hitting with the end of the bat, known as a tipper, makes Sandbag go farther than a mid hit, which goes farther than a close hit.

Target Smash

Target Smash!, known as Break the Targets! or Bonus 1: Break the Targets in Super Smash Bros., and Break the targets! and Target Test in Melee, is a mini-game appearing in all three installments of the Super Smash Bros. series. The goal of the game is to smash 10 targets as quickly as possible. The game records the lowest time taken to smash all ten targets. If a character has never smashed all the targets, the game will also record how many targets were smashed in that time. There are three Target Smash stages ranging from easy to difficult. Players also have the option to build their own target smash stage in Stage Builder simply by adding tagets. Every month there is a special target smash stage in which players can try to achieve the highest score in an online ranking board. These stages are more themed than the default stages. While they change every month it can occur that a stage is recycled.

Race to the Finish

Race to the Finish, written as Race to the finish! in-game, is a bonus game in the game in which you have to reach the finish line as quickly as possible. Unlike Melee's mode your time doesn't count down but just counts how long you take to cross the finish line. Each series has their own stage to race on, the Mario franchise's stage is similar to the Mushroom Kingdom while the Kirby franchise is similar to Gourmet Race. It can be played to up to 4-players locally.

Stage Builder

Stage builder returns from its previous incarnations. This time around a lot more things have been added to improve on the stage builder. It takes what Smash for Wii U improved in, and adds more to it. Last time the objects were limited to springs, canons, moving platforms and lava. This time more objects have been added, with some of them returning from Brawl like: tunnels, pillars, ice blocks, drop blocks, spikes, ladder, rotating platform and the conveyor belt. Water blocks now also are added.

Newly introduced objects are environmental objects. When selecting which background the stage has, a pack with objects belonging to that becomes available to decorate the stage with. Most of these either act as structures, but some are purely aesthetic. The background are:

  • Cloudy: A cloudy sky, similar to the backgrounds of Battlefield and Temple. Floating pillars appear in the background. Has clouds and ancient Greece-like structures.
  • Volcano: A rocky mountain area. A volcano is in the background and its lava flows all over the rock. Crumbled rocks and such are structures.
  • Ocean: A view of an ocean. Rocky structures appear in the water. Has multiple underwater structures like reef and mines.
  • Space: An area in outer space. A giant space craft appears in the background. Mainly futuristic machines as structures.
  • City: A modern city-like structure made of rounded shapes. The Super Smash Bros. logo acts as the sun. Structures include cars, hydrants, lanterns and such.
  • Forest: A view of a giant forest with a thick tree at it's center, popping out far above the other trees. More nature structures likes trees and bushes.
  • Darkness: A dark area, looking out over a van Gogh painting-like background with the moon shining bright in the sky. Structures here are often light-source based, like lanterns.

Target Builder

Completely new to the series is the Target Builder. It is implemented in the regular stage builder, but basically adds one new object for the stage builder, a Target. These are the same targets from Target Smash and Race to the Finish. When you place a target in the stage builder, it automatically changed to a Target Smash stage, allowing you to create your own Target Smash stage.

SSBVS-Bowser's-Castle BowsersCastleMap
The castle is a medium sized stage consisting out of a base platform with two smaller platforms on the side. These side platforms can be broken when Thwomps crash down upon them, but will be rebuild after time. The Thwomps will not be present the entire time. The background features a head statue of Bowser spilling lava which fills most of the background and drops down into a waterfall behind the stage. Popodos jump in and out of the lava, Toads are locked up in cages and a Dry Bones is clinging to a half-sunken climbing wall in the background.
SSB Donkey Kong SymbolGangplank Galleon
Gangplank Galleon-0 Gangplankgalleon
The ship is a huge stage on the scale of Palutena's Temple and Great Cave Offensive, being based off its incarnation from Donkey Kong Country 2. The stage can be separated in three main parts: the masts, the deck and the lower deck. The masts are a series of platforms which hold the masts and climbable ropes, at the top is even Krow's crow's nest. Several shooting barrels are also located between the masts. The upper deck bears large resemblance as to how it appeared in the first Donkey Kong Country. It does include a canon that shoots one up. The lower decks can be accessed through the door left of the upper deck but also by simply dropping down. The lower deck mostly contains cargo crates which act as platforms. The lower half of the ship is sunken, being a sink danger. A barrel also appears here to shoot players up.
SSB Pokémon SymbolPokémon Stadium

The third incarnation of the Pokémon Stadium in the series, but simply dubbed Pokémon Stadium because the other two were removed. It is an evolved version of the previous two, including all of the stage transformations of the previous version, adding background Pokémon as well. It however also adds two new transformations: Ghost and Psychic, bring the total up to 10 transformations. The Ghost form darkens the stage greatly, it being illuminated by the dim lights on the stage. It bears as resemblance to a Victorian street. The Psychic form fills the stage with neon lights and adds two teleport pads to the stage.
SSB Pokémon SymbolAlola Islands

A travelling stage which passes the four Alola Islands.

It starts at Melemele Island, specifically on the battle stage of Iki Town. Left is a cliff while right is walk-off, it also adds two platforms to the stage and features Iki town residents and Pokémon in the background. Tapu Koko may appear to electrify the base platform

The second island is Akala Island, specifically the peak of Wela Volcano Park. You fight on the battle stage with a central hovering platform and additional ones at the side of the volcano. Kiawe and residential Pokémon are in the background. Tapu Lele may appear and induce sleep on the base platform.

The third island is Ula'ula Island, specifically Mount Lanikala. It is a walk off to the right, cliff to the left and hosts one long platform on the left. The Pokémon Center is in the background and npc's cheer there as well. Tapu Bulu may appear and gives the base platform healing properties.

The last island is Poni Island, specifically Exeggutor Island which is the front of the island having high ground to the left (a palm tree acts as a platform here as well) and the Magikarp boat as platform on the right, it is surrounded by water. The background primarily features Alola Exeggutors. Tapu Fini may appear and create a fog on the stage.

SSB EarthBound SymbolSaturn Valley
SSBVS-Saturn-Valley SaturnValleyMap
Consists of a grassy, elevated plain with a dip in the center. There are two houses, one on each side of the stage, and each has a wooden roof that acts as a platform. In addition, there's a Hot Spring in the center of the stage that will gradually heal the players who stand in it. There is a slope leading off the plateau, but it is merely part of the foreground and can not be used.
SSB Fire Emblem SymbolValla
SSBVS Valla Gygen Castle VallaMap
The hidden kingdom of Fire Emblem Fates. Players fight on the floating castle Gygen (Loulan). The base platform is in front of its gates, it has two pillars on each side on which you can fight, leaving a some of the base platform on each side as well. Nothing much happens on the stage except for other islands floating by slowly, acting as additional platforms.
SSB Golden Sun SymbolVenus Lighthouse
SSBVS-Venus-Lighthouse VenusLighthouseMap
A Golden Sun location. It has two identical tower on each side which host a platform in them to fight on. The middle section is the largest tower which has platforms on each side with an elevated part in the middle. At the top are the four statues which summon a ball of energy when the sun sets which splits the middle tower in half and reconnects at night.
SSB Xenoblade SymbolArgentum Trade Guild
SSBVS-Argentum-Trade-Guild Argentumtradeguildmap
The stage consists out of two large platforms underneath each other. The lower is a large platform in front of the guild's entrance while the other one is on the roof. While on the roof you can jump on the higher roof left of the stage and even more left is another small platform attached to the ship at the height of the bottom platform. Thick clouds are underneath the trade guild, causing for a short bottom blast line. To make up for that there is a high upper, and far side blast lines.
SSB Snipperclips SeriesSnipperclips
SSBVS-Snipperclipspng Snipperclipsmap
The stage is similar to as it appears in the picture, only larger in size for the players so they can actually fight on it. While it doesn't look like it, it is a platform stage similar in size to Final Destination, albeit a bit bigger. The basket has been moved up which gives the right platform also a wall on the right. The middle platform still has the seesaw although the distance between the platforms is much bigger. The base platform is completely carton now with the pencil still at the left side, sticking out and also acting as a ledge. However there is much more room between the pencil and the platform, so it doesn't create a wall.
SSB Excitebike SymbolExcitebike
SSBVS-Excitebike Excitebikemap
A rather walk-off stage similar in size to that of Colosseum or Bridge of Eldin. On the left is a ramp, then it leaves empty room in between before going to the next ramp of which half of the ramp extends into a longer platform. Below that are two pools of mud that have sticky properties. Sometimes the Excitebikers drive by, in this case the only 10% safe part is the muddy part of the stage.
Rayman Icon SSBDLand of the Livid Dead
LandofthelividdeadoriginsSSBVS - LandoftheLividDead Landofthelividdeadmap
While the stage takes its inspiration from its incarnation in Rayman Origins it still pays respect to the one in Rayman 3. The stage is rather simple, being a stone platform with many coffins, some flesh eating plants and some Teensies locked in cages on the background. It has a hunebed in the center of the stage acting as a platform and some other stone platforms hovering around. Underneath the stage is a poison lake, one can swim in it but takes damage while doing so. Occasionally a spine serpent will traverse underneath the stage which can save one from death. Occasionally spiked tentacles will emerge from a random direction as well and stay on the stage for a bit. One side of the tentacle will act as a platform while the other side has spikes on them. They might cover other platforms making them unusable.
Minecraft Icon SSBDMinecraft
SSBVS-MinecraftMinecraftmines Minecraftmap
The top of the stage seems fairly simple, as it appears to be a simple flat grassfield with the size of Final Destination. There is a house being build in the back and many trees. The main feature of the stage are the wooden panels. On the surface are two panels that when broken lead to the mines below the surface. Diamonds glitter inside of the mines. In the mines there are two wooden panels at the side of the stage, if broken one can smash the opponent out from the side of the stage. In the center of the cave is yet anther wooden panel with a ceiling just a few feet above it where characters can be stage spiked down into the lava-filled hole when the wooden panel is broken. After some time, the wooden panels will respawn, sometimes "trapping" the fighters inside the cave. At night Creepers will roam the surface, but can be defeated. When the sun arises they will explode.
Tales symbolTitania
SSBVS - Titania Titaniamap
A rather simple stage in that it takes place on top of the prison tower of Titania. To the left is a huge mountain which prevents being KO'd to the left side. Two additional platform hover next and a big higher to the tower. It is always gloomy on the stage. At some point Armatized Innominat appears in the background of the stage and perform his Right of Rule which makes him fly through the center of the stage as he performs a powerful slash with his blade.

The stage layout is based on the design of the Twilight Town from Kingdom Hearts III. It consists of a medium platform in the middle, with a two small platforms rising above it. On the left side of the medium platforms wall, two very small platforms are wedged in. Two other platforms are side by side the medium platform. In the background the train station clock tower can be seen. The train occasionally passes by during the match.

The Ruins
Ruins Theruinsmap
Being based on the first level of Undertale, the Ruins. This is where you enter the game with a blank slate. You fight on the ground which is roughly the size of Final Destination. However 1/4 of the right is an elevated platform, with a pit underneath. In the background is the door into the ruins, two staircases lead to the door and the wall is covered with some ivy. In front of it is a pile of autumn leaves and a safe point, in front of that is a small river with a bridge across it. Pillars are then adjacent to the stage itself. The platform has a table with some cheese on it and decorated with many spider webs. Somewhere on the background is another pile of leaves on which Napstablook is resting. On the other side is a rock near a button.
