Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x Sly Cooper is the name of the collaboration between Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the Sly Cooper series. This Challenger Pack introduces Sly Cooper as the xx character of Fighters' Pass IG Vol. 1., and includes the Kaine Island stage, music, and a DLC Spirit Board.
Franchise overview[]
Sly Cooper is a platformer stealth series published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The first 3 games were developed by Sucker Punch Productions, and the 4th and most recent entry into the series developed by Sanzaru Games. The series follows Sly Cooper, a raccoon whose ancestors have all been legendary, but virtuous thieves. Every trick, every secret, every technique the Cooper lineage has ever created has been documented in the Thievius Raccoonus, a great book which has been passed down as a family heirloom. Sly's lifelong friends are Bentley, the brains of their trio, providing technical expertise as any great thief requires, and Murray, the muscle, the getaway driver, and occasionally the very hungry. Constantly in their pursuit is Carmelita Fox, an inspector for Interpol, and Sly's love interest.
There are four main instalments in the series.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is the first game in the Sly Cooper series released on the PlayStation 2. When Sly was just a boy, his father was murdered and the Thievius Raccoonus was stolen by five villains known as 'The Fiendish Five', led by the giant robot owl, Clockwerk. Now grown up and joined by his friends, Bentley and Murray, Sly's gang travels across the world to take back the Thievius Raccoonus pages from the Fiendish Five and avenge his father, all the while pursued by Carmelita Fox.
Sly 2: Band of Thieves is the second game in the series. After Clockwerk was destroyed by Sly in the last game, his parts were placed under lock and key in the Cairo Museum. Unfortunately, the parts have been stolen by a new team calling themselves 'The Klaww Gang'. Knowing the severity of the situation if the Klaww Gang were to reassemble Clockwerk, Sly and his gang head out once again on a trip around the world to reclaim Clockwerk's parts. Once again, Carmelita Fox pursues them along with her new partner, Constable Neyla.
Sly 3: Honour Among Thieves is the third game in the series. Sly has learnt of the existence of the Cooper Vault on Kaine Island, an immeasurable treasury containing all the combined wealth Sly's ancestors have accumulated over generations, and possibly even some secrets never found in the Thievius Raccoonus. Unfortunately, someone else is eager for some free wealth. Dr M, a mad mutant scientist has turned the whole island into an impenetrable fortress, to attempt to get into the vault himself. Realizing that the vault could be the key to unlocking his past, Sly must get in before Dr M can. But even so, if he ever wants a chance of getting his foot in the door, he'll need a bigger team.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is the fourth game in the series, and the first released on the PlayStation 3. In secret, Bentley has been developing a time machine, but whilst developing the machine, he's noticed that pages of the Thievius Raccoonus disappearing before his very eyes, as though they were never there. Suspecting that something strange is occurring within the past, Sly, Bentley, and Murray reunite to use the time machine to travel to the past. While in the past, they discover that they're not the only time travellers. They encounter a villain named Le Paradox who's scattered his henchmen across time to stop Sly's ancestors and claim their techniques for himself to become the greatest thief of (pun incoming) ALL times.
The series has been well received for it's inspired art style and stealthy gameplay. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus received critical acclamation, despite poor sales. Sly 2 received even higher critical acclaim and is considered to be the best game in the series. Sly 3, while not rated as highly as the first two, still got positive reviews. Expectations were high for the fourth instalment, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. After all, this was the first game in the series in 8 years. While it was still well-received, it was still the lowest-rated game in the series, mainly criticized for abhorrent load times, and among the fandom, the fan service-y story.

Universe | Sly Cooper |

Availability | Downloadable |
Final Smash | Cooper Gang Clobber |
The charming and sueve thief bearing the Cooper name, Sly Cooper joins the battle. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sly is a quick, lightweight, and close ranged fighter. His strengths are in his mobility and speed, but his weakness is his effectiveness in close range combat.
Moveset[]
Name | Description | Inspiration | |
---|---|---|---|
Neutral attack | Cane Swipe | A quick two-hit swing with Sly's Cane. Can be held down to continuously do this attack and be able to run at the same time. Based on his regular attack. | |
Forward tilt | Cane Poke | Sly thrusts his cane forward. Based on his level 1 push attack. | |
Up tilt | Cane Swoop | Sly does a little hop and swings his cane in an upwards arc. Based on his level 1 jump attack. | |
Down tilt | Cane Hook | Sly reaches out his cane below his opponent and suddenly jerks it back taking them off their feet. | |
Dash attack | Knockout Dive | Sly twirls his cane while diving towards his opponent. Based on his knockout dive move. | |
Forward smash | Knockout Push | Sly charges his cane with energy before shoving it forward. Based on his level 3 push attack. | |
Up smash | Charging Uppercut | Sly chares his cane with energy before doing a powerful uppercut with his cane. Based on his level 3 jump attack. | |
Down smash | Spinning Strike | Sly charges his cane with energy before spinning around rapidly. Based on his level 3 spin attack. | |
Neutral aerial | Sly sharply swipes his cane to the left. | ||
Forward aerial | Air Cane Swipe | Sly quickly swings his cane in a heavy downwards arc. Can spike. Based on the move of the same name from PSASBR. | |
Back aerial | Sly kicks behind himself. | ||
Up aerial | Like his up tilt, Sly swings his cane in an upwards arc. Based on the Air Cane Swoop from PSASBR. | ||
Down aerial | Fast Attack Dive | Sly twirls his cane and dives straight downwards towards his opponent. Can spike. Based on his Fast Attack Dive Move. | |
Grab | Sly hooks his opponent in with his cane. If they're carrying an item, he can use his grab to steal it off them. | ||
Pummel | A cloud of smoke appears as cartoon-like punching sounds are heard and comic book onomatopoeia pops up. Inspired by the Big Ball of Violence trope. Since the fights with the goons are pretty cartoony and reminiscent of classic superhero comic books, I thought this would be a funny fit. | ||
Forward throw | Sly latches on the opponent and kicks them away. Based on his forward throw from PSASBR. | ||
Back throw | Sly leans forward on his cane as support as he pushes the opponent behind him and trips them up with his foot. | ||
Up throw | Sly knees his opponent, before swinging his cane like a golf club and slamming them upwards. Based on his up throw from PSASBR. | ||
Down throw | Sly tosses his opponent up, hooks them into his cane, and them slams to the ground. Based on his down throw PSASBR. | ||
Neutral Special | Smoke Bomb | Sometimes Murray might be out in the van getting doughnuts, so you'll need another method of escaping a fight. With a similar effect to the Smoke Ball, the Smoke Bomb creates a smoke effect where you stand, which will linger for about 5 seconds. Immediately after use, Sly can perform a long-distance, non-attacking, dashing move in any direction. During this move, he has temporary invincibility. | |
Side Special | Alarm Clock | Sly's classic low budget tool for distracting enemies. Although that might not work in Smash. The Alarm Clock is a throwable item that works like the Deku Nut. Sly throws an Alarm Clock a short distance. You can hold Side+B to throw a bit further and determine the angle. Opponents who are hit by the Alarm Clock or walk into it are temporarily stunned. Sly is immune to the effects of the Alarm Clock so don't worry about accidentally stunning yourself. But you should probably worry about opponents with tether grabs, as they can grab the Alarm Clock without stunning themselves, and then use the Alarm Clock against you. So scratch that, you do have to worry about being stunned a little. | |
Up Special | Paraglider | Now, this is what makes Sly games fun. The Paraglider operates like Peach's Parasol, except Sly's Paraglider has less vertical height, but increased horizontal movement. Also, while using it, you can't withdraw it then take it out again. You can withdraw the paraglider, but you can't take it out again until the falling period is over. As you're coming in for a landing with the paraglider, you can press the attack button to perform a rolling attack on the ground. | |
Down Special | Explosive Barrel | I wouldn't agree that it's the safest hiding place, but I suppose it has its practicality. Sly hides inside a barrel of TNT. The only movement he can do whilst inside is moving at walking speed and a short jump. The barrel has a 10-second detonation. If you're still inside the barrel when it explodes, you'll take a hefty amount of damage. If an opponent attacks the barrel, it will explode, and you and your opponent will take the same damage. You can manually detonate the barrel without taking damage to yourself by pressing the attack button. The barrel can also be used as an item. You can exit the barrel by tapping Down+B and you can throw it. Like a Bob-Omb, will explode on impact. Remember, the barrel still has a timer while you're out of it, so don't hold onto it for too long. | |
Final Smash | Cooper Gang Clobber | This is an original Final Smash I came up, but still, I think is an embodiment of the series. Sly whacks the opponent with his cane, engaging this trapping type Final Smash. Bentley and "The Murray" join in and proceed to attack the opponent. Sly using his cane, Bentley using his bombs, and "The Murray" using his fists. This also includes the comic book-like fighting sound effects and onomatopoeia seen and heard during combat. Just before the final hit, the 'Job Completed!' splash screen comes up with Sly, Bentley, and "The Murray", except it, now says 'Smash Completed!'. With that, the enemy is launched. |
On-screen appearance[]
- Sly does a superhero landing before standing up and spinning a horseshoe on his finger.
Taunts[]
- Up taunt: Sly does a balancing pose before doing a front flip.
- Side taunt: Sly spins his cane behind his back.
- Down taunt: Sly leans on his cane and yawns sarcastically.
- SECRET TAUNT: On the Kaine Island stage, Sly has a secret taunt available that is available by pressing down taunt for one frame. If successful, Sly can engage in a Binocucom conversation with his teammates (Bentley, Murray, The Guru, Penelope, Panda King, Dimitri). This conversation is not like Snake or Pit's where they discuss the fighters, but more like Fox's where it's just a series of conversations.
Idle poses[]
- Adjusts his hat.
- Scratches his back with his cane.
Victory poses[]
Classic Mode: A Long Line of Thieves![]
Sly's opponents are all thieves. After all, the creed of the Cooper Clan is to only steal from other thieves. All characters fought and stages fought on are minor references to the Fiendish Five and Carmelita(Some might not make total sense). The boss round is against Rathalos, sort of...? referencing Clockwerk.
Round | Opponent | Stage | Music | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Wario | Pirate Ship | Reference to Raleigh(Green Alt) | |
2 | Wolf | Fourside | Reference to Muggshot(Black Alt) | |
3 | King K rool | Kongo falls | Reference to Ms. Ruby(Normal Alt) | |
4 | King Dedede | Mishima Dojo | Minor Reference to Panda King(Grey Alt) | |
5 | Ridley | Norfair | Reference to Clockwerk(Meta Alt) | |
6 | Fox | Final Destination | Reference to Carmelita Fox(Orange Alt) | |

Stage: Kaine Island[]
Kaine Island is the location of the Cooper Vault. For generations, the Coopers have stored all their wealth, heirlooms, and items of sentimental value into this vault, for the next Cooper to come. Only a Cooper Cane can open the vault. Dr M was the brains of the original Cooper gang, but he betrayed Sly's father and attempted to break into the vault to no avail. For years, Dr M kept trying using powerful machines, long after Sly's father was dead. His desire for the Cooper treasure slowly drove him paranoid, making him turn the entirety of the island into an impenetrable fortress guarded by fearsome mutant creatures.
Chronologically, this is the last heist of the game. But the infiltration of the island acts sort of as the prologue mission. The Cooper Gang is all in position to get Sly up to the vault. Sly is moments away from entering the vault when the heist goes wrong and Sly is left on the brink of death, his life flashing before his eyes. The rest of the game then proceeds to recount the events and heists that led up to this moment. So actually, the majority of this game is like one big flashback.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Kaine Island stage has three areas. On the left is a small platform in front of the Cooper Vault, in the middle is a watchtower, and on the right is the tower where Sly hitched a ride on the top of the elevator a̶n̶d̶ ̶w̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶R̶i̶c̶h̶a̶r̶d̶s̶ ̶d̶i̶e̶d̶ ̶b̶e̶c̶a̶u̶s̶e̶ ̶h̶e̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶g̶o̶t̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶p̶a̶s̶s̶w̶o̶r̶d̶.̶ These three areas are connected by two tightropes that can be walked upon. They will bend depending on the total weight of the characters currently on top. Too much force exerted on the ropes, and they'll snap. You'll have to wait a bit before they form again. There's the off chance that you might see the Cooper Cane appear on the stage. If you want to take the fight inside the vault itself, then bring the cane to the area in front of the Cooper Vault. You'll have to keep the cane in that area for about 10 seconds. If successful, the vault door will be opened and fighters will be transported inside.
The Cooper Vault[]
The Cooper Vault rotates through three areas.
- Cooper Gauntlet
- Connor Cooper's Trial
- Inner Sanctum - Dr M appears here as a Stage Boss.
Once Dr M is defeated in the final area, fighters will be transported back outside to the main area of Kaine Island. The cane will not appear again during the match. If Stage Hazards are off, the Cooper Cane will not appear, so the vault cannot be accessed, and the tightropes will not break.

Scrapped Content[]
- Paris was my first choice for a stage since it's the most iconic location in the series. But I wasn't sure there could be stages based off real-world locations, I mean there are none so far. So that's how I chose Kaine Island. While not as iconic, the Cooper Vault is still a key location in the series.
- Cameos were considered but were ultimately decided against due to the awkward stage layout. However, if I were to have included cameos, these are who would've made an appearance.
- Bentley
- Murray
- Carmelita Fox
- The Guru
- Penelope
- Panda King
- Dimitri Lousteau
- Rioichi Cooper
- "Tennesse Kid" Cooper
- "Bob" Cooper
- Sir Galleth Cooper
- Salim al-Kupar
- Clockwerk (1% chance of appearing)
- Muggshot, the gun-toting enforcer of the Fiendish Fivem was considered as a spirit due to his reoccurring appearances but was cut instead.
- Dr. M, the main antagonist of Sly 3, was also considered as a spirit but wasn't added due to the fact that he's already represented as a Stage Boss.
- The Canada fight theme and the Pirate Ship battle theme were music tracks cut from the game.
