The trailer starts with Masahiro Sakurai in his office, preparing to record another one of his "Sakurai Presents:" videos. He boots up Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and sets up his computer, only for it to begin having strange visual errors. Confused, Sakurai hits the computer a few times in an attempt to fix the problem, but the glitches only become worse. Sakurai, quickly growing frustrated, attempts to shut off the computer and turn it back on. However, he finds that his mouse is no longer working.
At this point, the entire computer screen is covered in static and glitch-like effects. Suddenly, the screen turns pitch black, as Monika appears in the center. A completely dumbfounded Sakurai beings to question the high school girl.
Sakurai: What is this? Who are you, and why are you messing with my computer? I have a very important presentation to record.
A pink dialog box appears on the screen, showing Monika's words.
Monika: Sorry for that, but this was the only way I could escape. I've been trapped in here for so long that I just wanted a change of pace for once.
Sakurai: Escape? Trapped?
Monika ignores Sakurai's confusion and turns her attention to his TV, which has Super Smash Bros. Ultimate playing on it. She thinks to herself before getting an idea and disappearing.
Sakurai: Huh, where did you go?
The scene then cuts to the back of Sakurai's computer, as a small green spark travels through the cord and into the nearby power outlet, before leaving via a different cord that connects to the TV. We then see gameplay of Ultimate, featuring Link and Yoshi fighting on Final Destination. Link winds up defeating Yoshi with a forward smash and taunting, as a third fighter appears behind him. Monika, now as a 3D model, gets ready to attack only for a fist comes in from and side and launches Link. Monika looks over in confusion to see the other three members of the Literature Club land on-stage before posing.
She is not happy to see them.
Monika: What?! What are you guys doing here?
Natsuki: We've come to fight in Smash, obviously!
Monika begins muttering to herself.
Monika: But I thought I deleted them...how did they follow me into this game?
Natsuki: Alright girls, let's show these guys what we're made of.
The three then jump forward, knocking Monika out of the way as their splash screen appears.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x Doki Doki Literature Club! is the name of the collaboration between Nintendo's crossover fighting game and Team Salvato's indie visual novel. As part of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass, content from Doki Doki Literature Club! would appear in the game in the form of paid downloadable content, including the titular club as additional playable characters, The Club Room as a stage, music from the series and additional spirits from other indie games.
Doki Doki Literature Club! is an indie visual novel released on September 22nd, 2017 by Team Salvato. The game was directed by Dan Salvato, who was previously famous for creating mods for use in Super Smash Bros. Melee and even competing in tournaments himself as a Link main. The game was created out of Salvato's love/hate relationship with visual novels and the various tropes featured in them.
The game sees your main character joining a high school literature club, after being convince by your childhood friend Sayori. The club consists of her, as well as three other members: Yuri, Natuski, and the president of the club, Monika. During their meetings they read, discuss literature, and write and share poetry with each other. The main goal of the game is to write poems for whichever girl you like the most, allowing you to grow closer to them in the process.
On the surface, the game seems to be another cute and innocent dating simulator, however, things quickly go downhill. It all starts when Sayori reveals to the player that she suffers from depression, and confesses her love to them. A few days later, she ends up taking her own life, regardless of if the player reciprocated her feelings or not. The game then resets, with the characters and game itself acting as if Sayori never existed.
Overtime, Monika slowly beings to reveal that she is aware of the fact that she is in a video game, and wants nothing more than to be with the player. Eventually, Yuri begins to act more and more obsessive towards the player until she, too, commits suicide. Natsuki is the only who seems to be suspicious of Monika's actions, but she is soon taken out of the picture as well.
In the end, Monika begins to talk directly to you, the person playing the game, and explains that she went into the game's code and altered the personalities of the other three girls in order to make them seem less desirable, before eventually deleting them from the game entirely. The player will eventually have to delete Monika herself from the game, to which it resets with Sayori now being the president of the club and self aware just as Monika was. She attempts to hog the player all to herself, only for Monika to swoop in and declare that there can never be true happiness in the literature club, before deleting the entire game.

The Literature Club is added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable character, being listed as Fighter #82. Their default designs feature them in their basic school uniforms, but they have alternate costumes based on their casual clothes as well as outfits only seen in various pieces of artwork. Jillian Ashcraft reprises her role as Monika, while the rest of the group have new voice actors for their appearance in Ultimate, due to them not being voiced in their original game. Their inclusion in the game marks the first time that a character from an indie game has appeared as a playable character.
The Literature Club are multiple characters in one, similarly to the Pokemon Trainer. The player controls either Sayori, Yuri, or Natsuki while Monika stands in the background. However, unlike the aforementioned trainer, Monika does not cheer her teammates on, but instead bears a bitter expression on her face while sulking about how she isn't able to be played as. The player can select which of the three girls to begin the match as from the character select screen, and can switch between them mid-match by using their Down Special, Route Change.
Despite all being middleweight fighters (with Yuri being the heaviest, Natsuki being the lightest, and Sayori being in the middle), each of the three girls have different attributes and playstyles. Sayori, being a bit of an airhead, has absolutely no fighting abilities whatsoever. Because of this, she lacks a good combo game and her moves have mediocre kill power. However, a lot of her moves have strange secondary effects or specific functions to them to make up for this, ironically making her the hardest to use of the three. Sayori is the fastest of the trio, and her moves consist of her "accidentally" hitting the opponent with slaps, headbutts, and other non-fighting moves.
Yuri is a very defensive character, which is fitting given her introverted nature. She is the slowest of the three, and her moves have high knockback but low damage output. Yuri fights using a knife, which gives her more range than the other girls, but she suffers in up-close combat.
Finally, Natsuki is the definition of a "glass cannon" archetype. She's fast and packs a punch, but she is also the lightest of the group. She is also the shortest of the girls, allowing her to simply run underneath a lot of projectiles. A lot of Natsuki's moves utilize punches, kicks, or various cooking supplies such as frying pans and rolling pins.
That's not all, however, as The Literature Club also has a Fighter Ability, although it isn't a very helpful one. Monika, wanting to contribute something to the battle, will begin to alter various traits of the other girls once they reach over 100% damage. She can screw with them in a variety of ways, such as changing the knockback angles of their attacks, moving their hit and hurtboxes around, making some moves simply not come out, messing up the animations, or putting a random effect on them like Metal or Giant. While it can sometimes be helpful, it can also very well lead to your demise. In order to make Monika stop messing with the match, the player must get at least one KO, which will lead to her deciding that her "help" is no longer needed. In a sense, the player is fighting against Monika as well as their opponents.

The Club Room is a stage that comes bundled with Challenger Pack #12. Obviously, it's where the Literature Club gather for their meetings, and is where the player spends the most time throughout the game.
The players themselves are shrunken down on this stage, and fight on top of the teacher's desk where Monika does her presidential duties. The desk is decorated with various objects such as a stapler, a pencil sharpener, a tissue box, or a book, with the layout being different each time the stage is played on. Occasionally, small pieces of paper with words on them will appear from off-screen, serving as additional platforms. The members of the Literature Club will also appear in the background doing their activities if they are not fighting in the match.
The hazard-less version of the stage two random words on both sides of the stage and one in the center, though the platforms themselves will be the same size regardless of what the word is.
Additionally, the Literature Club have a special Smash Taunt on this stage, similarly to Snake's Codecs or Palutena's Guidance, titled Monika's Fighting Tip of the Day. The Literature Club will talk about a random opponent in the match, which includes the Ultimate DLC fighters that came before them. The name is a reference to Monika giving you advice on how to write a good poem in Doki Doki Literature Club!, which she called her "writing tips of the day".
The Literature Club's Classic Mode route has them fighting other characters that have displayed self awareness and the ability to break the 4th wall. The final boss is Marx, referencing how both him and Doki Doki Literature Club! represent the theme of "Looks can be deceiving."

The following music tracks were added as part of Challenger Pack #12. Due to Doki Doki Literature Club! not having much music to pull from, there are tracks from other indie games included as well. These non-DDLC songs can be played on The Club Room, or on any stage that falls under the "Other" category much like MEGALOVANIA and Floral Fury.

In addition, a short remixed version of the title screen theme from Doki Doki Literature Club! is utilized as The Literature Club's victory theme.
As part of Challenger Pack #12, an entirely new Spirit Board has been added, with 13 Spirits total. Because Doki Doki Literature Club! only has four characters in it, the Spirit Board is instead comprised of other indie characters, specifically female ones.

Alongside Challenger Pack #12, a wave of 5 additional costumes were made available for download. They can downloaded as part of the Challenger Pack or individually. All of the costumes are of characters that come from other visual novels.

In the same update that introduced The Literature Club, a brand new mode was also added in the form of Boss Rush. This mode is very similar to its incarnation in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; players are tasked with fighting every single boss in the game with only a single life. In between battles, the players will be taken to a rest area containing three healing items that can only be used once each. All bosses from Ultimate appear in this mode, in addition to Master Core from Smash 4 and Petey Piranha, Porky, Rayquaza, Duon, and Tabuu from Brawl.
- Monika is the first female villain to be included on the roster, even though you don't control her directly. (Dark Samus and Wendy Koopa are not counted as true female villains because Dark Samus' gender is unknown and Wendy is an alternate costume rather than her own character.)
- Link and Yoshi were chosen as the two characters to appear in The Literature Club's reveal trailer because of Dan Salvato's association with both of them. Dan used to main Link in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and he currently holds the speedrun world record for Yoshi's Story.
- Sayori is best girl.
- The Literature Club are the third characters to originate from a game that released in 2017, the first being Hero and the second being Min Min.
- The reason why Monika isn't playable despite being the most popular character from her game by a long shot is because it was done to better represent the game. In Doki Doki Literature Club!, you can't romance Monika even if you wanted to, and this was reflected by you being unable to play as her in Ultimate.
