Revision as of 18:57, 18 September 2020

Not to be confused with EnderLegends' page, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x DOOM Eternal.

Ssbxdoom

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x DOOM is the name of the collaboration between Sora Ltd's crossover fighting game and Bethesda's hack'n slash series. As part of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass, content from DOOM appears in the game in the form of paid downloadable content, including series protagonist Doom Slayer as an additional playable character, Hell on Earth from DOOM: Eternal as a stage, music from the series and additional spirits.

The inclusion of Doom Slayer was revealed in a surprise Nintendo Direct, with the character being set for release on June 6th, 2020. Doom Slayer is the fourth character included in Fighter Pass Volume 2. He returns in the game's multiplatform port, and will return in the game's sequel, Super Smash Bros. Omega.

Reveal Trailer

The trailer begins with an aerial view of Okumura's Spaceport of Greed, where the Phantom Thieves are escaping the collapsing palace. Once Akechi has shot Shadow Okumura dead, the spaceship Utopia is suddenly hit with a green beam, causing it to mostly combust and crash back to the ground. Akechi claws out unscathed, only to find the Phantom Thieves have escaped. He then spots a silhouette in the fiery distance. Believing it to be Joker, he empties his clip into this mysterious intruder...it does nothing. Now aware that Akechi is a threat, the person charges towards him. We are unable to get a clear look at him for the time being, but Akechi dodges, soon engaging in a sword fight with this challenger. It ends when Akechi's sword is knocked from his hand, and into the distance. Now cowering in tremor, Akechi fearfully asks, "Who the hell are you?!," as the new remix of "The Only Thing They Fear Is You" kicks in. Finally getting a good look at this intruder, he pulls out his separate sword, before stating, "It doesn't matter. You won't live to remember it." Igniting the sword, now revealed to be the Crucible, the glow of the Argent energy reveals the bloodthirsty executioner to be...

Doom Slayer Razes Hell!

(Direct): The trailer cuts to the text "Now In Development."

("Mr. Sakurai Presents: Doom Slayer"): Gameplay footage of Doom Slayer is shown, ending with his Final Smash.

Logo: The Smash Ultimate logo appears, and transitions to the "SSBU X ____" screen. The Crucible ignition sound is heard once the DOOM logo appears.

Ending Cinematic: The Doom Slayer makes his way out of the mostly destroyed Palace, carrying a lifeless Akechi with him. He steps over the countless corpses of the initial demonic invasion. The sky has turned a menacing violet, as Crazy Hands litter the sky endlessly. VEGA taps into the Slayer's helmet, reluctantly admitting that they are too late to stop this other invasion. He drops Akechi, who has been vertically bisected and indeed cauterized by the Crucible. Igniting the sword once again, we get a visor reflection of the mastermind behind this second wave...Dharkon. This is a teaser for the World of Light: Chapter II DLC expansion.

Gameplay Preview (Direct only, separate from trailer): Doom Slayer is seen fighting alongside Isabelle in a team battle, a reference to DOOM: Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons sharing a release date. They taunt together at the end.

Franchise overview

The DOOM franchise is a series of first-person shooter video games developed by id Software, and related novels, comics, board games, and major film adaptation. The series focuses on the exploits of an unnamed space marine operating under the auspices of the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC), who fights hordes of demons and the undead.

The original DOOM is a first-person shooter presented with early 3D graphics. The player controls an unnamed space marine — later nicknamed the Doomguy by fans and ultimately named the Doom Slayer — through a series of levels set in military bases on the moons of Mars and in Hell. To finish a level, the player must traverse through the area to reach a marked exit room. Levels are grouped together into named episodes, with the final level focusing on a boss fight with a particularly difficult enemy. While the levels are presented in a 3D perspective, the enemies and objects are instead 2D sprites presented from several set viewing angles, a technique sometimes referred to as 2.5D graphics. Levels are often labyrinthine, and a full screen automap is available which shows the areas explored to that point.

In DOOM: Eternal, players once again take on the role of the Doomguy (Doom Slayer) who battles the demonic forces of Hell, from a first-person perspective. The game continues the 2016 reboot's emphasis on "push-forward" combat, encouraging the player to aggressively engage enemies in order to acquire health, ammo, and armor. The player has access to various firearms, such as the Combat Shotgun, Super Shotgun, Heavy Cannon, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle, Chaingun, BFG 9000, and Ballista. Melee weapons such as a chainsaw, the Crucible energy sword and a retractable arm-blade, known as the Doomblade, can also be used.

Challenger Pack

As part of the Challenger Pack, the following content is added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

#75 Doom Slayer

Doom Slayer

Boxing Ring Title Hell's Most Wanted
Final Smash Rip and Tear

The rage-fueled, demon-killing Doom Slayer is added as a playable character, labelled as fighter number #79. His default design is based on his appearance on DOOM: Eternal, but he has alternate costumes based on his appearances in other mainline games. He is voiced by Brad Hawkins. VEGA is voiced by Gianni Matragrano in his triple-A debut.

Doom Slayer is a surprisingly light fighter with a tremendous speed and range game, excelling when fighting opponents with guns. However, the Doom Slayer's close range game is weak without much options to defeat opponents nearby, requiring Doom Slayer to rush from his opponents in order to utilize his strongest killset to guarantee the knockout. Doom Slayer is a menacing fighter, with fast but hard-hitting moves fit to (figuratively) rip and tear through opponents, however he needs to rely on his Fighter Ability, the Ammo Count, as many of his moves rely on it. When it's empty, he has to rely solely on hand-to-hand combat.

Attributes

As previously mentioned, the Doom Slayer is a middleweight. He is rather quick on the ground, and his initial dash is exceptionally fast, close to Mewtwo's and he has a good run speed, comparable to Mario's, which allows him to quickly get out of difficult situations. His walk speed is slow, but his air speed is impressive on par with Roy's. Like in his home series, when dealing with literally anything it is better to just go all-out. However, opponents with fast moves such as grappling hooks (Joker, Rico, etc.) can easily be a match for him.

Doom Slayer has exceptionally deadly smash attacks, allowing him to quickly rack up damage, which is useful as it ties in with his first Fighter Ability, Ammo Count. As the player takes damage or deals physical damage, his rage takes the form of new ammunition. His second gimmick is Weapon Select, allowing him to change his neutral special at will.

Overall, the Doom Slayer is a quick and strong character who won't have trouble bringing hell upon the stage. He has access to a strong toolbox, allowing him to adapt to any situation. However, Doom Slayer will have problems with fighters that can outrun and outwit him, his over-reliance on offense and speed can be baited out with smart planning and while he has different options face-to-face against an opponent, approaching one can be difficult depending on circumstances.

Moveset

Name Description
Neutral Attack The first jab is a simple jab. Second jab is a left hook. Third jab is a downward stomp that may have a meteor smash effect. Multijab is a series of alternating punches.
Forward Tilt Doom Slayer delivers a devastating right hook. This attack can be angled up or down.
Up Tilt Nearly identical to Snake's up tilt, but deals less knockback and more damage, and it can be angled left or right.
Down Tilt Doom Slayer slams his leg down, similarly to Bayonetta's down-air. This attack does not have a meteor effect.
Dash Attack Doom Slayer rushes forward with the Doomblade out, dealing decent knockback and damage. Essentially a weaker side special.
Neutral Aerial Doom Slayer spins his Doomblade in a circle, similar to Joker's neutral aerial.
Forward Aerial A simple slash in the air. Deals minimal knockback and light damage.
Backward Aerial Doom Slayer slashes down with the Doomblade. No meteor smash effect.
Upward Aerial Doom Slayer delivers an uppercut slice that focuses on an upward hitbox
Downward Aerial Doom Slayer slams downward in the same fashion as his Glory Kill. This has a special variation of the meteor smash effect, as the (first) opponent hit by this attack will travel down with him to the ground. If there is no ground, the opponent will lose their stock first. Yikes!
Grab
Glory Kill
Doom Slayer grabs the opponent by the neck.
Pummel Doom Slayer brings his knee to the opponent's face. Deals moderate damage, but is slow.
Forward Throw Doom Slayer delivers a swift but forceful punch that sends the opponent flying.
Backward Throw Doom Slayer grabs the opponent by the leg and throws them with enough force to send them flying.
Upward Throw Doom Slayer trips the opponent and slams them upward with great force.
Down Throw Doom Slayer slams the opponent to the ground, Doomblade ready, and digs the blade right into them, before retracting it inside the opponent, which sends them flying afterwards. This move has a blood effect in the Definitive Edition, but it can be turned off in Settings.
Forward Smash Attack Doom Slayer unleashes his Crucible and holds it above his head. When the input is released, he swings it to the ground, similar to Ganondorf.
Upward Smash Attack Doom Slayer unleashes his Crucible and prepares to swing. When the input is released, he will swing it above his head.
Downward Smash Attack Doom Slayer unleashes his Crucible and holds it like a golf club. When the input is released, he swings it around himself.
Shield Special
Weapon Select
The Doom Slayer can select a weapon by holding B and Shield, then selecting with the left stick.
Neutral Special
Weapon
The Doom Slayer fires forwards with the selected weapon. He will lock on towards the nearest opponent. All of the gun's stats depend on which gun is selected. When he's out of ammo, this move is useless, as the weapon will click to signify the lack of ammo.
Side Special
Blade Dash
The Doom Slayer dashes forwards with his Doomblade slashing outward. The initial dash and first blade hit deals average damage and small knockback but the retracting saw-tooth hitbox deals massive damage, especially if the opponent is hit on the base. Missing this attack will leave the Slayer open to attacks, so it's optimal to land this attack with a hard read.
Up Special
Meathook
The Doom Slayer will equip his Super Shotgun and fire the Meathook upwards. Identical to Byleth's up special, it works as a tether and an attack option. Unlike Byleth, the up special shares a move with his neutral special, as the Meathook is used as the hold fire for the Super Shotgun when it is equipped. It can only tether 2 times as opposed to the normal 3.
Down Special
Equipment Launcher
The Doom Slayer launches a projectile from his Equipment Launcher. There are 3 types of projectiles he can launch.

  • Straight Down: Launches a Frag Grenade. The grenade will detonate after 2.5 seconds. Unlike Snake, the grenade cannot be "cooked" and will be launched at the first chance.
  • Down/Left: Launches a Siphon Grenade. The grenade will detonate on impact. When an enemy is in the radius of the grenade, their health is depleted while the Slayer's is replenished.
  • Down/Right: Launches an Ice Bomb. The grenade will detonate on impact. When an enemy is in the radius of the ice bomb, they will be frozen if their damage is high enough.

When his Ammo Count is empty, the grenade is replaced with a short Flame Belch, which works exactly like it sounds. Flame Belch has a long cooldown, however, so use it wisely.

Final Smash
Rip and Tear
The Doom Slayer activates the Haste powerup and rushes towards anything that is in front of him. If successful, the opponent(s) will be launched into a wall as a cutscene begins. He will load his shotgun and move towards the opponent(s), trapping them in the ground. What proceeds is a brutal beatdown with his fists and Doomblade, followed by a hurricane of ammunition, before Doom Slayer pulls out the BFG 9000. He steps back and aims at the opponent(s). The ball of energy creates a tendril that pierces the opponent before creating a MASSIVE explosion, ending the cutscene and sending the opponent(s) flying off. Ammo Count does not affect this move.

Weapons

Weapon Description
Combat Shotgun Tapping the B button once will fire one shell from the Combat Shotgun. Rapidly tapping the B button will activate the Full Auto mod, which chews through Shells but deals a helluva lot of damage. Holding the B button will launch a Sticky Grenade that detonates shortly after contact.
Heavy Cannon Tapping the B button once will fire a Precision Bolt. Rapidly tapping will fire the cannon normally. Holding B will fire a volley of Micro-Missiles.
Plasma Cannon Like the Heavy Cannon, rapidly tapping the B button will fire the cannon normally. When the Cell ammo is empty, tapping the B button once will unleash a Heat Blast. Holding will activate the Microwave Beam.
Super Shotgun Tapping the B button once will fire two shells at once. Holding the button will activate the Meathook, which whill grapple the Slayer towards an opponent. Rapid tapping does nothing.
Chaingun Tapping once does nothing. Rapid tapping fires the gun normally. Holding switches to Turret mode, which fires EVEN FASTER.

Idle 2 Doom Slayer inspects a random weapon from his arsenal.
Up Taunt Doom Slayer readies his weapons, hungry for a fight.

Hell on Earth is a moving stage inspired by its incarnation from DOOM: Eternal. In the normal version, the stage is almost immediately overrun with demons of all sorts. Made up of mostly Imps and Cacodemons, the occasional DOOM Hunter or Marauder will show up as a stage boss.

In the hazard-less variant, the stage has no demons on the stage. Even then, the bottom of the stage is still replaced with lava.

Trivia

  • Doom Slayer is the 5th character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to originate from an M-rated game, after Snake, Bayonetta, Joker, and Raiden. This chain is followed afterwards by Scorpion.
  • This article was inspired by a seemingly endless wave of similar pages, all originating from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x Devil May Cry.
  • The Khan Maykr Spirit battle almost instantaneously became infamous due to how unbearably difficult it was, overshadowing the Pauline, Jeff, and Sothis Spirit battles. From this, countless memes spawned about its difficulty, even to the point where id Software and Nintendo themselves got in on the fun. A difficulty adjuster for DLC Spirits was added in the 11.1.0 update.
