The only new thing that has added in Squad Strike is that players can also battle with a squad of 4 fighters.
All 86 characters (88 if counting Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon) from all previous Super Smash Bros. games return as playable characters. The game will feature 24 newcomers. Six fighters are planned as downloadable content, making it a total of 30. In total, it would be 110 (112) characters at launch and 116 characters (118) are playable overall. Like Smash 4 and Ultimate, the Mii Fighters are available from the start via customization. Like in Ultimate, each character is numbered in the order from when they first joined the series, with the exception of Echo Fighters (who share a number with the character they are based on) and Pokémon Trainer (whose Pokémon are numbered instead). All characters who have Echo Fighters are available from the start, while Echo Fighters themselves are unlockable.
Each character has a set of alternate costumes that features different colors or designs. The amount of costumes have now been increased to 10 from 8 in SSB4 and Ultimate. However, due to the presence of 8-Player Smash, only eight costumes can appear in each battle. A list of alternate costumes can be found here.
