Super Mario: The Star Kingdom is an upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch, being developed by LuigiGuy Games as the company's first mainstream project, with support from Nintendo. A PC port is also on the table in addition to the Switch version, as well as a 3DS version. It was announced via an investor's meeting, with Nintendo giving permission to LuigiGuy Games(the developer) for them to announce the game via their website.
Story[]
One day, Bowser and Bowser Jr. stumble across the Star Kingdom, a land full of mystical stars, said to contain tons of power. Attracted to this, Bowser seeks out these stars. Sadly for Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Wario, Yoshi, and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom are taking a vacation to the Star Kingdom. Once the local residents inform Mario & Luigi about the Star Kingdom's Star Dilemma, they set off for adventure. Meanwhile, Wario sets off not for the Stars, but for what treasures they might have.
Gameplay[]
The game is a mixture of classic 2D Mario and modern 3D Mario. Like in the 2D games, you can go from left to right, stomping enemies, and collecting powerups, but you have a health meter, must collect stars, and can Wall Jump and Ground Pound like the 3D games.
You can also select your character. Mario, Luigi, Wario, Peach, Yoshi, and Waluigi are all available to choose from. Each character has their own stats and special move.

Items[]
Throughout the game, you can pick up powerups. Collecting a power-up lets you take another hit of damage by having the powerup wear off.
Game Modes[]
The game has a few different modes, accessed from a main menu.
Single-Player Story Mode[]
In this mode, you play through the campaign to stop Bowser and retrieve the Power Stars by yourself.
Two-Player Story Mode[]
This mode is the same as the Single-Player, but you have another player with you who can help or harm your progress. If a player stays off screen for too long, they die.
Two-Player VS Mode[]
If you don't feel like cooperating in Two-Player Story Mode, then you can just duke it out. There are several versions of Battle Modes:
Arena 1v1 - The standard battle mode. Use items to defeat your opponent. | |
---|---|
Race - Play on a linear racetrack and make it to the finish line, while using boosts along the way | |
Minigames - Play some minigames competitvely. | |
Old-Fashioned Way - Same as Arena 1v1, but more limited and you can fight melee attacks |
Minigames[]
Throughout the course of the game, you unlock minigames you can play in the HUB world. To play, you buy the minigames from Shy Guy's shop. Each character also has a unique minigame(with the exception of Waluigi, who shares Wario's minigame). Each minigame also rewards you with small items, power ups, and even Power Stars!
Sharp Spinies - Mario's minigame. You must dodge spinies and jump over them with his signature ability, the Spin Jump. | |
Tall Tower - Luigi's minigame. You must use your exceptional jump to make it to the top. In addition, segments where his high jump are used are present. | |
Blocked Blocks - Wario and Waluigi's minigame. You must use Wario's Shoulder Bash or Waluigi's slide kick to break the blocks blocking the exit at the top. | |
Tounge Twisted - Yoshi's minigame. Use his long tounge and eat the specified amount of enemies before the time runs out. | |
Great Gap - Peach's minigame. You must use her slow decent to make it over several large gaps. |
Minigames also exist for 2 Player VS mode, though this time they are not character specific, and are modified versions of Luigi and Peach's minigames.

Trivia[]
This is the first Mario game to come out on PC since "Mario Teaches Typing 2" from 1997, and the first to be a platformer since "Super Mario Bros Special" from 1986. This is also the first offical Mario game playable on Ubuntu Linux computers.
This is the first time Waluigi was given a significant role in a Mario platformer, despite the game being a spin-off, due to being handled by a non-Nintendo developer.
According to an interview with LuigiGuy Games, the Cape Feather was originally considered as a power-up. In that same interview it was also mentioned that Wario was originally an unlockable character.
Originally, only Mario and Luigi were planned to playable, with no special moves. However the lead programmer suggested multiple characters with unique physics and moves.
Waluigi was originally going to have everyone except Yoshi's abiliy plus his own ability. However this would make him too overpowered(by human standards, as the lead desginer said)so he just has his own ability.
This is LuigiGuy Game's first and only 3DS game, and also the first game for them to be credited in. In addition, this is also the last first party game for the 3DS to enter development.
Originally, Wario was not able to wall jump, due to his already poor jumping skills. However this was changed so Wario can wall jump for difficulty balancing.
The game was actually nearly cancelled. The developers faced software problems and didn't know how to fix it. However, they got support and development continued, at the cost of the game being delayed by two days.
