Super Mario Stars is a 2.5D side-scrolling Mario game developed and published by Nintendo. It was released on the Nintendo Switch.

Plot[]

A letter is sent to the Mario Bros residence. It's opened at it reads:

"Dear reader, you have been invited to the 100th Anniversary of the Castle's Power Stars which protect the kingdom."

Mario and Luigi get ready and venture towards the castle, starting with a tutorial level. Upon getting to the Castle, the party has already started. However, Mario notices how Princess Peach is noticably absent. He goes towards the upper floor but instead finds her trapped in a dark bubble. Then, a Ztar (black star with white angry eyes) blasts through the window and knocks out Mario. It flys away with Peach, unconcious in the bubble.

Mario wakes up later to find the Castle in ruins. Mario goes down to the Party Room and finds Toadsworth knocked out. He explains that the castle was attacked by the Ztars. The Ztars are negative powers of energy and the opposite of the Power Stars. The Power Stars were handed down by the Star Sprites to protect the Mushroom Kingdom by the evil Ztars. However, due to the Grand Star's age, it loses the ability to protect the kingdom. The Ztars blew everyone else away from the Castle. So, Mario quickly ventures onto a new adventure.

Mario travels through various worlds, fighting many enemies and Ztar-possessed equivalents. Along with Ztar-possessed Bosses. Along the way, he finds many of his friends, such as Luigi, Toad and Toadette, unlocking them as playable characters. He also finds the pieces of the Grand Star. However, at the end of World 4, Bowser's Airship crashes by with Bowser on it, not pleased how the world is being taken over by someone else. Mario manages to sneak onto the airship and fights Bowser Junior. However, after he's done, the airship gets attacked! Mario runs straight out towards Bowser, and he finds out that the Ztars are attacking the ship. The ship begins to crash towards World 5, and Mario and Bowser are separated.

Getting to the World 5's final area, "Tear in the World", Mario and co. encounter the Grand Ztar and the centre of the tear in the fabric of time and space. Peach is trapped there, used as a Power Source along with the final Grand Star Piece. The heroes would proceed to battle the Grand Ztar, however, the battle gets interupted halfway by Bowser, who would set the Ztar ablaze. The Ztar, however, would fly towards bowser and go into his mouth, turning him into "Grand Ztar Bowser", a giant monsterous beast. However, using the power of the rejoined Grand Star, the beast is defeated. Mario and co. now with Peach and the Power Stars, return back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Plus Story[]

Peace is restored to the Kingdom after the last adventure, and Toad Town and the Castle are being fixed. However, all is not well as the Mario Bros are informed that there's some strange activity going around at Bowser's Castle. Peach sends the Mario Bros and Toad to find out what's going on, but after beating the first plus world, they're attacked by Bowser Jr.'s airship.

Ofcourse, Bowser is back at it again and Mario and co. must go through four more worlds to stop him. Each world has a tower and a castle where one of Bowser's most loyal henchmen stay.

Upon encountering World 5's final castle, it's shown that Bowser is still under control by the Grand Ztar. After beating the Koopalings, Mario and co. have the final showdown with Grand Ztar Bowser. At the end, the Grand Ztar escapes from Bowser and flies back into the galaxy.
