The trailer begins with an overview of a battlefield covered in ink, then an overview of the salmonoid’s hideout, and finally an overview of a Octo Valley. Now this would make most people believe that it was going to be yet another Splatoon game in the veins of the first two, but then it cuts to a perspective of floating slightly overhead of the ocean at an increasing speed with the music starting to include a bit of an electric guitar. Then, a blooper-like figure zooms ahead of the camera. So for the next couple of shots, this blooper-like figure swims around in the water until it finally super jumps out of the water like an inkling. As it's flying through the air, the squid is revealed to have many features resmbling Mario, and that's when it transforms like an inkling, but it's revealed that it actually is Mario! Then it pans away from him, showing Isle Delfino in a very colorful yet polluted state, and that's where the beat drops (and the jaws of all the Mario and Splatoon fans watching). As Mario lands in Delfino Plaza, he pulls out F.L.U.D.D., straps him on, and poses in a position similar to the box art. Then the rest of the trailer shows gameplay of Mario cleaning up ink, fighting enemies, swimming in water as a blooper, and interacting with other Npcs in humorous ways. And every once it a while it cuts to the inklings to let the audience officially know that it's a crossover. It was one of the biggest games Nintendo had shown during E3 of that year, and many people were blown away at not only the fact of a sequel to Mario Sunshine, but also because it was one of those rare occurences outside of Smash Bros where Nintendo franchises have come together.
