Super Mario Quest: Black and White is an adventure-platformer game, made by Hybrid Co, and published by Fantendo. It's one of the most innovative games of 2011, featuring a alignment system, jump combinations, special skills, and even more.

Gameplay

It's, basically, a traditional platformer. You can jump, run, and walk. When you start fighting, you can also throw punchs and attack. You have a open world, taking any paths you see, so you can go and pass levels by searching shortcuts. You can go trough all the Mushroom Kingdom in the game, with a free-will to take choices anytime.

When you start winning EXP, you win acess to the Skill Tree, with skills like "Double Jump", "Shell Throw", "Dash Kick"... Also, you win EXP by helping or attacking your friends/enemies. The skills vary between the alignment of the player.

You can take items from Question Blocks, and power-up whenever you want. However, those items only can be used one time each. If you want to transform one more time, you need to take another one.

At the end of each world, or in the middle of them, you encounter one boss. The boss is different if you're good, evil, or neutral. They have special attack patterns, and skills.

The world is open for you to explore, but has a story full of cutscenes and choices.

You can also play online, with a unlimited amount of players. On the Online mode, you can select other characters (and even their alignment).

In the online mode, you can battle other players with Suits, Power-Ups, shells, and other objects. You can also attack them by jumps. However, you can play on a Co-op mode with your friends.

Some of the Playable Cast in the multiplayer mode have special abilities.

Story

Mario gets a letter from the Princess, saying that he must be in the Toad Town's Central Square at 08:00 o'clock. Not late, he goes to the meeting... and he discovers it's a trap! Bowser has kidnapped Peach another time. Knowing the disaster, Mario charges a fireball... while Bowser, with a new wand, shoots him! When the magic hits Mario, he senses something... And then, faints. Bowser takes Peach, destroys the town, and laughs at Mario.

When he wakes up, he feels something in his mind... some dark thinkings. Why do good things to the world? Why save a princess, without any reward? And so, he starts to reflex about it... without knowing Bowser's spell, which had created millions of infected darkness on Mario's body. It's now up to the player to see if the darkness will show, Mario will remain neutral, or the goodness will remain... Ready for anything, Mario starts the journey in the Mushroom Hills, a quest to reflex and think.

Trivia

  • The game's alignment system is based on the one from Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Even though the game has a pretty defined plot, you can take any shortcuts in the game, since you don't go through levels. By this, you can even skip worlds.
  • The Online Multiplayer has been highly praised for his battle mode.
  • Geno comes back from Super Mario RPG because of an agreement with Square Enix.
