The game conserves the same formula as the two past installments: players are able to create their own Super Mario levels and worlds in different styles and course themes. They are also able to share their levels and worlds in Course World to players around the globe, also being able to play and even download levels created by other players. Star features new game styles, course themes, enemies, power-ups and more for players to use and build more levels. According to Jay Okumura, this game was created to make a fun experience for both veterans and casual players to play.
Gameplay
Star conserves the same gameplay as the other two installments of the series: a 2D platformer with a time limit. However, several things from Super Mario Maker 2 are changed in this game. A list of this changes include:
- A "Screen Wrapping" option has been added. In this option, only available for vertical levels, a player will immediately teleport to the other side of the level when going through one side of the screen.
- Super Mario 3D World does not longer count as an "Extra" game style but still has exclusive features.
- Players can now change the length and location of the goal and the starting arrow. They can also now select the goal they want.
- Water, poison and lava can now be selected in any course theme and in any part of the level (excluding Underwater and Space) using the F.L.U.D.D option. A new type of liquid is also added: Quicksand.
- With the addition of Speaker Boxes, comments on courses have been removed.
- New Clear Conditions have been added. Some of these involve destroying elements of the course or completeing a level without getting a power-up.
- Two new course element sections have been added: "Bosses" and "Goals".
- Music sound effects can now be added to power-ups.
- Players can now edit the trajectory of certain enemies like Hammer Bros. or Monty Moles.
- Certain enemies have been redesigned, including Sun and Goombud.
- Some enemies now have a Fire Flower option that transforms them into a "fire" version of themselves. Fire Flower enemies include Fire Bros., Flame Chomps and Magma Bubbles.
