Super Mario Kart Z, made by Hoola-Z Productions, is the 10th Mario Kart game in the franchise made for the Golden System Z console. This game has similar features to previous installments, with the addition of the "Super state". There are also new racers, modes, tracks, and more!

Gameplay

Super Mario Kart Z features the same racing dynamics as Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The controls, as with other Golden System Z games, are simply updated to the new controllers.

Super Mario Kart features similar to near-identical mechanics of Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. They all allow for up to 12 racers per race.

The basic driving mechanics are the same: drive forward, turn, and drive backward, which is now sped-up slightly in battle mode. With drifting, the mini-turbo takes slightly less time to occur, while the super mini-turbo and ultra mini-turbo are slightly more time. Perfect drifting on multiple consecutive turns can give a hyper mini-turbo, which is green. This gives a huge boost of speed.

There are new items, including some taken from Super Mario's Split Kingdoms. Most of the previous items are returning, not counting special items, which are replaced by Super states. There is also a major new item, called Obstacle Items. When Obstacle Items are taken (available in any place), a stage obstacle can be placed, like a goomba, or sometimes even a chain chomp.

Grand Prix and Racing have returned, the point system is the same as Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:

Missions have returned as well. These have unique qualities, some including non-playable racers, new obstacles, and even boss races and boss fights in karts!

The most major new addition though are Super states, which can be toggled on and off from in VS and are automatically on in Grand Prix. Super states occur when a place is held for a long time, the farther back, the more powerful it is. Super states are unique to each racer and have a trait that will either boost the racer or weaken opponents. Super states are not available in battle.

Battle is mostly the same as the previous console installments, with the addition of one new mode. Most of the retro battle maps are taken from Double Dash, Wii, and 8.

Grand Prix Grand Prix features a set of four races in a cup played consecutively. Points are tallied throughout the four races, and the racer with the most points is crowned the winner.
Versus Versus is similar to Grand Prix, except different things can be customized, like the number of races, the types of items, and whether there are teams or not.
Time Trial In Time Trial, one player races alone around a track as fast as possible. You can also play against ghosts who you recorded or are recorded from the game.
Challenges Challenges are races that have unique objectives, even including boss battles. Some of these also take place on battle stages.
Knockout A special type of racing where there is no set amount of laps, customizations are allowed as in Versus. In knockout, after a minute of racing, the last-place racer at the time is eliminated after ten seconds.

Balloon Battle In Balloon Battle, everyone has three balloons at the beginning. Hit others with items to get a point and cause them to lose a balloon. If you lose a balloon, you lose a point. If you lose all three balloons, you will lose half of your points. The winner has the most points.
Coin Runners In Coin Runners, coins are scattered about the stage. Coins are collected by running into them. If you are hit, you will lose half (or the majority with an odd number) of your coins. The winners has the most coins.
Shine Thief Shine Thief has a shine sprite in the middle of the stage. One racer can grab it, and they will be slightly slower. To release it, they need to be hit by an item. The game ends when someone has held it for 20 seconds or after 5 minutes of the battle.
Renegade Roundup In Renegade Roundup, half the players are the cops, the other half are the renegades. The cops have piranha plants that can reach out and catch renegades. Once renegades are caught, they are placed in a cage that has a key underneath, allowing for other renegades to release them.
Moon Capture In Moon Capture, there is are 3 moons behind each team of racers. Each team must try to capture moons from the other side. But careful, if you are on your home side, you have a piranha plant. So if you cross sides, you can be captured and put in jail on their side (but it still can be released). The first side to steal all three moons and return them to their side is the winner.

Race Flags
Racing Racing online is exactly like normal racing, but each player votes for which stage they would want, out of all stages, unlike Mario Kart 8 and Deluxe. The picked stage is raced on as normal with all the players in that room.
Battle Battle online has the same voting sequence, but it also switches between the five types of battle. Teams are divided up randomly.
Tournaments Online Tournaments can be set up by players and have the same customizations as versus battles. Racing or battle scores are recorded for one week, then they are reset.

When Tuneette gains her Super State, she gains her flowingly dressed opera form. She will then shoot out music notes when driving, spinning anyone nearby out of control, lasting for 12 seconds.

  • This is the first Mario Kart game made by Hoola-Z Productions and the second made by Hoola92
  • Unlike Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this game features no 3rd party racers
  • Though it doesn't fit his size, Ninji became a medium out of need for another medium weight
  • Like previous installments, cruiser weight has the least amount of racers
  • Polari was considered as a racer, but changed to a palette swap of Luma
  • New Donker was considered for a racer, but soon cut
  • Knockout was inspired by a mode of the same name in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing
  • Rosalina is the starter that debuted the most recently, debuting in 2007's Super Mario Galaxy, while Pauline is the first debuting unlockable racer with 1981’s Donkey Kong
  • Wiggler is the only previous racer not returning, as he is a stage obstacle and a boss in challenges
