The tale begins at a party in Peach's castle. During the party, however, Mario and Luigi get bored and decide to take a look at the plumbing. There, however, they find Blue Toad and Yellow Toad, who are staring at the Super Star - a Power Star that fuels the Mushroom Kingdom itself, and can grant any wish to any living being.
"Bowser may be trying to steal this star!" The Toads tell the Bros. "Will you help us stop him?" Mario and Luigi nod in approval, and the four rush out the castle (but not before giving Peach a birthday present) in order to defeat Bowser.
Right near the end of the game, it is revealed that Bowser had stolen the Super Star and kidnapped Princess Peach while the heroes were travelling. Mario, Luigi and the Toads manage to retrieve the star and rescue Peach before Bowser can make his destructive wish come true.

Movement
Notes
King
The King can move in any direction, but only one square per turn.
Can "castle" with a Rook under certain conditions. The King cannot be captured, but if he is trapped and cannot escape, you lose the game.
Queen
The Queen can move in any direction as far as she likes, as long as her path is not blocked.
None
Rook
Can move any number of squares vertically or horizontally, as long as his path is not blocked.
Can "castle" with the King under certain conditions.
Knight
Can move in vertical or horizontally, but must move in an "L" Shape (two squares forward and one sideways or one forward and two sideways)
Can pass through pieces from its own army (which other pieces can not).
Bishop
Can move diagonally as far as she likes, as long as her path is not blocked.
None
Pawn
Can move forwards, one space at a time. On its first move, however, it can move two spaces.
Becomes any other piece of your choice upon reaching the other end of the board.
"Castling"[]
"Castling" is a special move performed with the King and one Rook. For this move, the King moves two spaces towards the Rook, and the Rook moves two (if you're castling on the "Kingside") or three (if you're castling on the "Queenside") spaces the other way. This move can only be used once per game, and must be the very first move for both pieces involved in the Castling Process. Also, there must be no pieces in the way of the King and Rook.
"En Passant!"[]
Pawns have a very special movement system, as they can move either two or one spaces forward on their first turn but only one on every other turn, but move diagonally when capturing. This move allows a Pawn to capture an enemy pawn who had moved two spaces on its first turn as if it had only moved one.
Trivia[]
The Star System is an allusion to Super Mario Galaxy.
This is the only New Super Mario Bros. Game not to have the word "New" in its title, the only one to have fourteen worlds (the others have nine, save for the original NSMB on the DS, which has eight worlds), and the only one to not have Star Coins (the Star System takes the place of the Star Coins).
This is also the first side-scrolling Platformer since 1990 where Yoshi can gain special powers by eating certain objects.
