Super Mario Blast (Japanese: スーパーマリオブラスト Hepburn: Sūpāmarioburasuto) is an upcoming side-scrolling platformer video game in the Super Mario franchise published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch as their answer to Sonic Mania and part of the 35th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros.
The game commemorates the original Mario games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. It features tons of elements from previous games alongside new ones. The game is also filled with tons of references. The game also features cutscenes done by Japanese animation studio Production I.G., in the same style as Wario Land: Shake It!.
Gameplay[]
Super Mario Blast is a sprite-based, side-scrolling platform game in the style of the earlier Super Mario games released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and takes elements from the older Mario franchise games (including it's spin-offs).
The main playthrough of the game takes place in "Adventure" upon which a menu of playable characters is selected. Players select one of six playable characters with three being playable at the start of the game, one after you beated the second boss and two available as DLC, each with their own unique abilities. Certain characters may also have certain unique aspects about their stories and the design of the level.
The player navigates through the game via two game screens: an overworld map and a level playfield. The overworld map works the same as the previous games from the main series and it is split into ten worlds, featuring locations from past games, alongside new, original ones. It displays an overhead representation of the current location and has paths leading to action panels, castles, towers and other map icons. Moving the on-screen character to an action panel or fortress will allow access to that level's playfield.
Unlike most of the 2D Mario games, this game hasn't the traditional life system, time limits or Game Overs, but it includes a Health Meter with 3 lives (as in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey).
