Super Mario 64 Switch is an upcoming game in the Super Mario series made for the Nintendo Switch. The game is a new enhanced remake and sequel of the 1996 game Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, and in turn of the 2004 remake Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS as well. As such, it has improved graphics, storyline, gameplay and many other new elements. Similarly to the Nintendo DS remake, Mario is not the only playable character: Yoshi, Luigi and Wario join him in his adventure to rescue the princess once again, along with two new venturers: Toad and Waluigi. The game is also revealed to include many more courses, Power Stars, bosses and secrets, as well as local co-op multiplayer.

Plot

"Dear Mario: Please come to the castle.
I've baked a cake for you.
Yours truly--
Princess Toadstool
Peach
"

Mario receives this letter from Princess Peach, who is supposedly awaiting for his arrival with a cake. Mario decides to go with some company, bringing Luigi, Toad, Wario and Waluigi along. However, the letter was actually written and sent by Bowser who had already captured the princess, expecting Mario (and co.) to arrive at the castle so his minions could capture them. Lakitu tries to follow Mario and his friends when they arrive, but quickly loses track of them after they enter. Several airships appear from behind the castle, and a bunch of Bowser minions start to lock every door in the castle. Scared, Lakitu retreats to look for help.

A sleepy Yoshi is suddenly awakened by some loud noises some time after, and as he finally wakes up, he notices the airships surrounding the castle grounds. Curious as to what is happening, Yoshi runs through the panicking Toad Village towards Peach's Castle. Upon arriving, the airships begin to flee as several enemies retreat. Yoshi then meets Lakitu, who explains that the castle has just been attacked by Bowser and his minions, and Mario & friends didn't return from inside the castle.

As Yoshi tries to enter the castle, Lakitu informs Yoshi that the castle was locked by Bowser's minions and that the main door key was stolen by a wandering rabbit. Lakitu asks for Yoshi's help to retrieve the key, and search for Mario and the others. Our dino friend gladly accepts, and not long after, he finds the rabbit and takes the key from him. When Yoshi finally enters, he hears Bowser's voice telling him, "Welcome. No one's home! Now scram--and don't come back! Gwa ha ha!" a desperate Toadsworth tells Yoshi that Bowser and his army had kidnapped Princess Peach and scattered all of the castle's Power Stars. He also reveals that the heroes were captured and thrown into paintings by Bowser's army after entering the castle. Yoshi decides to investigate, eventually collecting Power Stars and rescuing Mario, Luigi, Toad, Wario and Waluigi. The six heroes continue to travel through the worlds' painting, collecting the rest of the Power Stars in order to save Princess Peach from Bowser's grasp.

Gameplay

Like in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, the game's hub is Princess Peach's Castle, featuring several rooms and corridors from which courses can be accessed through paintings or sometimes even the walls themselves. Unlike previous versions, which had a total of 15 courses, this game features 5 new courses for a total of 20 courses. Additionally, the player can collect 200 Power Stars, 80 more than the original game and 50 more than the first remake.

As in its preceding versions, the game features a diverse host of abilities given to the players. Characters are able to ground pound, triple jump, long jump, back flip and somersault. However, some abilities given to some cannot be used by others, such as Yoshi's tongue and Toad's forward roll replacing the punching and kicking abilities used by Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi. Similarly to Super Mario 64 DS, Caps can be found in the painting worlds and some secret courses. This game's caps include Mario's, Luigi's, Toad's, Wario's and Waluigi's, each one turning the player's characters into the corresponding character who owns the cap, getting all of their moves, stats and Power Flower abilities. The latter are abilities unique to each character after finding the Power Flower which, similarly to its predecessor, replaces the power-up Caps from the original game. Once again, to switch between characters, the player has to use the doors found in the Character Room. Unlike in Super Mario 64 DS, there are now six doors for each character rather than only three.

Rabbits return with the same functionality: giving keys to unlock minigames. However, while some minigames return with altered controls and rules, most of the minigames are completely new. Each character now catches eight rabbits: Mario catches pink, Luigi catches green, Toad catches blue, Wario catches purple, Waluigi catches gray and Yoshi catches orange, for a total of 48 rabbits. MIPS, the only yellow rabbit, appears occasionally in the castle, and gives a Power Star when captured (and a key at the beginning of the game). Last but not least, and only for aesthetic purposes, the game features time recognition, and depending on the set time in the Nintendo Switch, the game's environments will switch between daytime and nighttime.

Characters

Playable Characters

The game features six playable characters, two of them being obligatory while the other four are considered optional. However, the six are required if the player wants to fully complete the game. Each has their own special abilities, strengths and weaknesses.

Name Description How to unlock Stats
YoshiIT
Yoshi
Yoshi is the first and default character. He must travel and find Mario, Luigi, Toad, Wario and Waluigi, who have been imprisoned by Bowser and his minions behind paintings. Yoshi has decent running and swimming speed, as well as a good jumping, being able to do his trademark Flutter Jump to reach higher places. However, he lacks any kicking or punching ability other characters have, consequently restraining him from grabbing large objects and enemies, and his ground pound isn't strong enough to break any Brick Blocks or defeat Boos. Despite that, this is replaced by the use of his tongue to eat enemies and turning them into eggs that he can throw as projectiles. Default
  • Power: 0/5
  • Speed (run): 3/5
  • Speed: (swim): 3/5
  • Jump: 5/5
Mario03-1-
Mario
Mario is the main hero, of course, but not without Yoshi giving him a little help first. After being rescued and unlocked, Mario brings some kicks and punches back as attacks. He is also now able to grab enemies, boxes and other objects and throwing them around. His ground pounds are more poweful than that of Yoshi's, allowing him to break bricks and obstacles Yoshi cannot. Not only that, but Mario is also the only character able to wall jump. Mario is obligatory. Defeat Goomboss in Goomboss Battle as Yoshi.
  • Power: 3/5
  • Speed (run): 3/5
  • Speed: (swim): 3/5
  • Jump: 3/5
Luigiart3DW
Luigi
Luigi is rescued by his brother, he has the same power as Mario, except he moves a bit slower when carrying objects and enemies, but he has the best jumping capabilities. Luigi is able to scuttle jump to briefly slow down his descents, and he can also slowly hover down after a somersault, rather than a normal backflip. Luigi is optional. Defeat King Boo in King Boo Battle as Mario.
  • Power: 2/5
  • Speed (run): 3/5
  • Speed: (swim): 3/5
  • Jump: 5/5
Toad SM64S
Toad
Toad can be rescued by either Mario or Luigi. He is the fastest character, having great running capabilities, and even being able to run on water briefly. Toad also has the unique ability to roll forwards, rather than punching or kicking. Not only does this attack enemies more effectively from afar, but it also allows him to travel even quicker. However, Toad is the slowest character when carrying objects, and his rolling move can't break objects. Toad is optional. Defeat Wingo in Wingo Tussle as either Mario or Luigi.
  • Power: 1/5
  • Speed (run): 5/5
  • Speed: (swim): 4/5
  • Jump: 2/5
LazyWario
Wario
Wario is rescued and unlocked by Luigi. Wario has the worst speed and jumping of the group, but this is compensated by his incredible strenght. Unlike others, Wario is actually faster when carrying objects and enemies. He is also capable of breaking special bricks known as Black Bricks, among other heavy objects. Wario is optional. Defeat Chief Chilly in Chief Chilly Challenge as Luigi.
  • Power: 5/5
  • Speed (run): 2/5
  • Speed: (swim): 2/5
  • Jump: 1/5
Mario Party - Island Tour Waluigi Artwork
Waluigi
Waluigi is the last one to be rescued and unlocked, by his buddy Wario. Waluigi is one of the weakest characters, unable to break objects with his Ground Pounds. However, he has the longest jumps, and throwing himself forwards can allow him to use the unique ability of 'swimming' in the air for a few seconds before finally falling down. Waluigi is also the best swimmer of the group, being able to move underwater with considerable ease. Waluigi is optional. Defeat Petey Piranha in Petey Piranha Showdown as Wario.
  • Power: 1/5
  • Speed (run): 3/5
  • Speed: (swim): 5/5
  • Jump: 4/5

Supporting Characters

Image Name Description
Peach - Mario Party 10 Princess Peach Princess Peach is once again the damsel in distress. What a surprise. The letter that was sent to Mario was actually not written by her, but by Bowser in order to trick him after he had sealed her in the fresco over the entrance of the castle. It is now up to Mario and friends to restore the castle's Power Stars and save Peach and everyone from Bowser's clutches.
LakituWatching Lakitu Bro. Lakitu Bros. are friendly Fishin' Lakitus with cameras, who are employed by the Kingdom News Network, filming our heroes' progress to keep everyone abreast of Bowser's new scheme and how they solve it. They occasionally give Mario and friends advice on certain topics about their adventure, and as the camera of this game, the player can adjust their recording angle.
SMRalltoads Toads Several Toads can be found outside and inside the princess' castle. This game features a Toad Village before arriving the castle grounds, in which some houses and a shop can be found. As Blue Coins now work similarly to the ones in Super Mario Sunshine, the player can use them to buy some Power Stars and miscellaneous memorabilia from Blue Toad, which can be seen in the Rec Room and from the main menu afterwards.
Toadsworth by banjo2015-d8ns17u Toadsworth Toadsworth is one of the people that were held captive inside the castle after Bowser and his crew locked it, basically taking the role of the first Toad in previous versions. When Yoshi first finds him in the main hall, Toadsworth explains to him about everything. He also points out to Yoshi the first world where he could collect stars, Bob-omb Battlefield. Also if the character loses his cap in one world and gets a star from another world, Toadsworth will have the character's hat and will explain that he supposedly found the cap in the castle. He will then return the character's cap back to its rightful owner.
Toadette SM64S Toadette Toadette takes the role of the Toad located in the Rec Room, hosting the minigames that the heroes unlock from the drawer's boxes after catching the Rabbits and getting the keys. Toadette will explain the rules of each minigame during the minigame selection when asked, and will also give useful tips.
Bob-ombBuddy SM64S Bob-omb Buddy Bob-omb Buddies are peace-loving allies to Mario and friends of the Bob-omb species. They are differentiated from the foes by their pink coloration, lack of a fuse, and red shoes. Bob-omb Buddies help Mario by opening Cannons for him, and are shown to have a longstanding rivalry with the evil Bob-ombs, as this was the first time both groups were at war. They also help by giving the locations of the eight Red Coins in whatever level they're in.
Koopa the Quick Koopa the Quick Koopa the Quick is a large Koopa Troopa that the player can race thrice for Power Stars, first in Bob-omb Battlefield, then in Koopa Harbor and lastly in Tiny-Huge Island. Once the player accepts his challenge, the race will start, and shortcuts like cannons or the use of power-ups will be considered cheating, and therefore would be an instant lose. With each rematch, Koopa the Quick becomes much faster and more difficult to beat. Somewhat hypocritically, Koopa the Quick himself cheats, as he takes a shortcuts like going up a slope too steep for the hero to climb normally in Bob-omb Battlefield.
Coachsmg Coach The Coach is a tall black penguin who teaches the other penguins sledding (and as seen in the Super Mario Galaxy games, swimming as well). He is considered the world champion sledder, and thus takes the role of the Big Penguin from the original game and DS remake. He is raced against in the third mission of Cool, Cool Mountain, inside the house at the top of the mountain. When the hero drops in through the chimney, the Coach will speak to him and challenge him to a race. If he accepts, he will have to race down the icy slide in the mountain and beat the Coach to the finish line. However, if the hero takes a shortcut by jumping onto another section or if he takes the hidden shortcut the Coach will accuse him of cheating and disqualify him.
Tuxie and Mom Tuxie and Mother Penguin Tuxie is a blue baby penguin that is lost on top of Cool, Cool Mountain. She needs to be reunited with her mother, and so Mario and friends must carry her down the mountain to her mother, located at its base. After doing so, her mother will reward Mario with a Power Star.
Hoot SM64S Hoot Hoot is a lazy owl that always sleeps in trees in several courses during the game. When Mario and co. climb into his tree, he will complain that they woke him up during daytime, but will then offer Mario and and friends a ride to the top of the course. The player can ride Hoot for as long as they would like. However, if Mario and friends hang onto Hoot for too long, Hoot will complain that their weight is making it difficult for him to carry them for so long, dropping them afterwards.
Rabbits SM64S Rabbits Rabbits are found throughout the castle grounds (and their locations vary from character to character). The designated rabbits for each character have a specific color - orange for Yoshi, pink for Mario, green for Luigi, blue for Toad, purple for Wario and gray for Waluigi. If caught, they unlock minigames for the player to play. Special Glowing Rabbits need to be caught to unlock a white door in the Character Door room, behind which was a secret Power Star. They will appear only after the player has collected 50 Power Stars. After catching eight of these rabbits, they will no longer appear.
MIPSSME MIPS MIPS is a mischievous rabbit found occasionally in some areas of the castle, mainly the basement. Unlike other rabbits found in the game, MIPS is the only yellow rabbit, and will give the player a Power Star after being caught, rather than a minigame key. MIPS will only appear whenever the player has collected certain amounts of Power Stars. After getting the last Power Star from him, MIPS will not reappear for the rest of the game.
Dorrie SM64S Dorrie Dorrie lives in the underground lake in Hazy Maze Cave. He spends his days swimming in circles, but will gladly give Mario a ride if he gets on his back. It is also possible to steer Dorrie by carefully climbing up onto his head; Mario and co. will lose control of movement for a moment, then the player can control Dorrie by facing the direction they want to go in. Ground Pounding on his back or approaching his neck will cause him to lower his neck, making this task easier.

Power-Ups

As in Super Mario 64 DS, each hero has an unique special power obtained from Power Flowers found inside red ? Blocka, replacing the three power-up caps from the original game. Unlike in the first remake, now every character is capable of obtaining the Wing Feather rather than just Mario. Once he has taken the flower, a hero uses his new powers for a short time. If the player hits the box without their cap on, a Bob-omb comes out instead.

Power Flower Powers

Name User Description
ACL MK8 Red Yoshi
Fire Power
Yoshi Yoshi turns into a red coloration, allowing him to breathe fire in order to melt ice and roast most enemies with fire blasts for a short period of time. The fire breath temporarily replaces his lick attack. Additionally, Yoshi can obtain this power from bonfires found in the two snowy courses: Cool, Cool Mountain and Snowman's Land, and by eating Red Koopa Troopas or fire-related enemies.
BalloonMario SM64S
Balloon Power
Mario Balloon Mario has the ability to float in a puffed out formation of the stomach to reach high-up places. The button must be pressed repeatedly so Mario can rise, if not, he will start to descend slowly. The ability can be cancelled immediately by doing a Ground Pound, but the effect will wear off by itself after a short amount of time.
VanishLuigi SM64S
Vanish Power
Luigi As Vanish Luigi, he is invisible to enemies (and slightly transparent to the player), and is thus able to pass by them completely ignored and unharmed. In addition, he is able to pass through cages, ice and certain walls. However, he can still be defeated by drowning, being crushed, or falling from heights or into lava. The effect wears off after a short period of time.
RockToad SM64S
Boulder Power
Toad Boulder Toad, as the name implies, is able to turn into a boulder by using his forward roll ability. Similarly to Rock Mario in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Boulder Toad can roll around and jump, damaging enemies and big objects with items inside them. If Toad touches certain enemies or a wall, he will revert to his rock form, but can be turned back into a giant boulder if the player rolls again. The effect wears off after a short period of time.
Wario Metal SMDR
Metal Power
Wario In this form, Wario is invincible (although he can still take falling damage) and can destroy enemies just by running into them. Metal Wario is also very heavy, and as such, can withstand strong winds, underwater currents, and can walk on the bottom of bodies of water without drowning. However, Metal Wario will sink fairly quicker than normal in quicksand and lava. Normal controls are used in this form. The ability will wear off after a short amount of time.
PoisonWaluigi SM64S
Poison Power
Waluigi As Poison Waluigi, he is able to release toxic clouds around him, which can damage and confuse nearby enemies. Waluigi's punching and kicking moves are replaced by a poison spin, which can be used in mid-air for recovery. While swimming, Waluigi is surrounded by a bubble of toxic water, which allows him to stay longer than usual underwater. Additionally, Waluigi can run through toxic clouds without taking damage. The effect will wear off after a short period of time.

Other Power-Ups

Name User Description
SM64S WingMario
Wing Power
Anyone Obtained by grabbing a Wing Feather, the user is given a pair of wings to fly around if he performs a triple jump or blasts out of a cannon. This is useful for reaching high or far areas and finding secrets in the sky. Also, the Wing Feather lets players do a Triple Jump without having to walk/run. The ability wears off after a minute.
MegaMarioGroup SM64S
Mega Power
Anyone Obtained after eating a Mega Mushroom, making the player into a larger size. The character can then obliterate almost anything in his path. However, unlike in Super Mario 64 DS, this ability no longer gives 1-UPs after destroying many objects in a row. The Mega Mushrooms are always found in Bricks scattered throughout the level and are introduced in Bob-omb Battlefield. The character cannot do any special types of jumps, such as the Triple Jump. If Yoshi and Toad grab a Mega Mushroom, they gain the ability to punch. The effect wears off after some seconds.
Rainbowmariotrans
Rainbow Power
Anyone An extremely rare ability, obtained by grabbing a Rainbow Star found in very hidden areas. It makes the user invincible, allowing him to resist to any enemy, and defeat most of them by simply touching them. However, the player can still die from falling off the level, but they are resistant to lava and other hazards. Like the Super Mushroom in the DS remake, if the character destroys more than eight objects, he will get a 1-Up for every additional object he destroys. The effect wears off after some seconds.

Courses and Missions

Main Courses

The following is a table containing information about Power Stars found within each course, how to get them, and what character is required to obtain them. As stated before, 5 courses have been added in this remake, and each course now features eight missions rather than six or eight. Therefore, the bonus Power Star obtained by collecting 100 coins in a course makes a total of nine Power Stars available in each course. If the player receives a star and re-does the mission again, the Power Star will appear with a blue, transparent look and will not count.

CheepCheepNSMBU
Cheep Cheep
Cheep Cheeps are slow-moving fish that roam around aimlessly, and thus don't tend to attack Mario and friends at all. However, if the hero touches one, he will be damaged, thus losing health. They can only be defeated by using Waluigi's Power Flower power underwater. There are only two Cheep Cheeps in the game. Dire, Dire Docks
DeepCheepNSMBU
Deep Cheep
Deep Cheeps are green-colored variations of Cheep Cheeps that, rather than swimming aimlessly at all times, will follow Mario and friends if they get too close. Deep Cheeps will stop following them once they get away from their range of vision. Like with Cheep Cheeps, only Waluigi can defeat a Deep Cheep. There is only one Deep Cheep in the game. Dire, Dire Docks
Cheep-Chomp NSMBDIY
Cheep Chomp
Cheep Chomps are purple Cheep Cheeps that are bigger than usual. They replace Boss Bass from the original game and the DS remake, having the exact same behavior. They aim in on the player character with their mouth wide open, attempting to eat them. If a character is eaten, that character will lose a life, regardless of their current health. Only two appear in the game, in Tiny-Huge Island, and only the one closest to the course's entrance can be defeated, with a Mega Mushroom. Tiny-Huge Island
HammerBroNSMBU
Hammer Bro.
Hammer Bros. are rare Koopa enemies that throw hammers at the player character. Only two appear in Koopa Harbor, two more in Bowser in the Sky and only one in Wingo Tussle. They hop up and down in place, throwing hammers in the player's direction. They can be defeated by either jumping on them twice, or once with a Ground Pound. Wario can defeat them instantly with a punch. Yoshi is also able to eat their hammers and spit them out back at them. Koopa Harbor

Boulder SM64S

ShyguyCTTT
Shy Guy
Shy Guys are uncommon masked enemies that appear only in Crazy Crazed Carnival and Candy Cane Castle. Shy Guys roam around freely, and similarly to Goombas, will try to ram into the player character. However, after doing so, failing or not they will quickly flee and avoid the player until they leave them alone. Their attack method repeats once they draw closer again. Shy Guys need to be jumped on twice or ground pounded once to be defeated. Wario can defeat them with one jump, and Toad can defeat them instantly with a roll. Crazy Crazed Carnival
Candy Cane Castle
FlyGuy
Fly Guy
Fly Guys are Shy Guys with propellers on their heads, which allow them to fly around. They are much more common than their land counterparts. Additionally, Fly Guys are capable of spitting fireballs at the player characters, as well as diving at them to attack. If players stomp a Fly Guy, they will Spin Jump high up into the air. This allows them to reach high places. When swallowed by Yoshi, they provide him with a burst of fire to spit. Shifting Sand Land

Bully Artwork SMEJ
Bully
Bullies are horned metallic creatures that usually reside on platforms, occasionally in groups. To attack, Bullies charge themselves into their enemies in order to push them over ledges, knocking their enemies into lava or bottomless pits. The only way for the hero to beat a Bully is to push it into the lava. After being melted, a Coin will be tossed up to the platform that the creature was pushed off from. Lethal Lava Land
Bowser in the Fire Sea
ChillBully SM64S
Chill Bully
Chill Bullies are literally Bullies encased in ice. They behave exactly the same, trying to push the player over ledges to knock them into bottomless pits. As such, the method to defeat them is the same as with Bullies. The only differences are their icy bodies and their single horn, rather than having two horns. Oddly, Chill Bullies do not appear alongside the big one in Snowman's Land, but only in Chief Chilly Challenge. Chief Chilly Challenge
NewPodoboos
Podoboos
Lava Bubbles jump out of the lava horizontally and bounce on the land, then they come back to the lava. They are indestructible, and if the hero touches one, it causes him to uncontrollably run damaged, like all other fiery enemies or obstacles. In the battle with Bowser in Bowser in the Sky, he spits some blue fireballs that turn into Lava Bubbles which immediately bounce towards the player. They disappear after a few seconds. Yoshi can also eat a Lava Bubble, causing him to spit out fire. Lethal Lava Land
Bowser in the Sky
Flame Chomp
Flame Chomp
Flame Chomps are fiery variants of the Chain Chomp. There are two types of Flame Chomps in the game: the tail-less ones that remain motionless and shoot a flame at the player when they approach, and the tailed ones that shoot fireballs from their tail, and eventually explode after running out of fireballs. The latter can be stomped, while the motionless ones are almost unbeatable except for Yoshi's capability to eat them and spit out fire afterwards. Lethal Lava Land (tailed)

Grindel
Grindel
Grindels are mummified Thwomps, with a pair of small round eyes and a grin on their faces. They only appear inside of the Pyramid of Shifting Sand Land. They attack the same way as a Thwomp, floating up in the air vertically and fall over the ground, squashing anybody below them. Grindels can also move horizontally by "jumping" back and forth. Shifting Sand Land
Spindel
Spindel
Spindel is a cylindrical creature made of stone that continuously rolls over the same stretch of territory. It is similar in appearance to Grindels. It appears only in the Pyramid of Shifting Sand Land, where it can be found rolling back and forth in one section of the pyramid. There is a safe spot where the player can hide to avoid being squished. Shifting Sand Land
Klepto SM64S
Klepto
Kleptos are condors that have a tendency to steal. One of them is seen holding one of the Power Stars in Shifting Sand Land, so the hero must reclaim it from his talons. The player can attack the bird, knocking him out for a short period of time. The Klepto eventually regains his senses, and after losing the Power Star, he attempts to steal the hero's cap (in Yoshi's case, damage him). Another Klepto also appears in the Sunshine Isles, and a third one in Tiny-Huge Island, when the character is big. Shifting Sand Land
Sunshine Isles
Tiny-Huge Island
Pokey NSMBU
Pokey
Pokeys are cactus creatures that wander around aimlessly and slowly follow the player character if too close. The player can destroy each body segment with a punch, kick or by throwing a Bob-omb at it; attacking the head defeats it and causes the whole body to instantly disappear. If the player waits too long after destroying any of its segments, the Pokey will grow them right back. They give Blue Coins when defeated. Yoshi can eat its segments, and Toad is unable to destroy it with his roll. Shifting Sand Land
ToxBox
Tox Box
Tox Boxes are stone boxes with multiple faces that attack by attempting to flatten the player character, by rolling over him. They often travel in small set pathways. Tox Boxes have faces on all but one side; the last side is only a square hole. This hole is for the character to stand in as the Tox Box passes over the tile he's standing on, thus letting him survive without being crushed. If Wario is inside one of them and punches (or jumps), the Tox Box will fly somewhere into the sand and sink or stay still if it's solid ground. Shifting Sand Land

MagiKoopa - Super Mario 3D World
Magikoopa
Magikoopas are bespectacled Koopas that use magic to attack. They can either conjure up enemies (Goombas and Bob-ombs) or fireballs. They can also teleport around. They can be defeated by stomping them. Oddly enough, if Yoshi eats them, he gets the ability to use an ice breath. Crazy Crazed Carnival

Skeeter SM64S
Skeeter
Skeeters are giant pond skater-like bugs that float on top of the water aimlessly. In Wet-Dry World, they can be lowered onto a platform. When they see the player character, they will get mad for him taking them off the water, and will try to home in on him. Wet-Dry World

Sushi New
Sushi
Sushis are blue shark enemies that swim around, minding their own business. There is no way to attack them and they usually won't bother Mario and friends, unless they accidentally swim into them. Dire, Dire Docks

Coin Coffer
Coin Coffers are coin purse enemies that first take the form of a regular coin, but when Mario and friends get near one, it reveals its true form and hops around. After four hops it somehow flattens up and then walks on the ground for a few seconds. Defeating one will earn the player five coins. They replace Moneybags from the previous games, although they behave exactly the same. Snowman's Land
Chuckya SM3DW
Chuckya
Chuckyas are a large purple sub-species of Bob-ombs, though they do not attack by exploding. Instead, they wander around a small area, and if the player character gets too close, they pick him up and throw him in a random direction, an attack method similar to King Bob-omb's. Defeating them also works similarly, as they must be picked up from behind and thrown, causing it to explode. Wet-Dry World

Smeech SM64S
Smeech
Smeeches are pink, winged pig-like enemies with plump lips. Unlike their attacking method in Super Mario Galaxy 2, Smeeches do attack at all times and do not flee from the player. They will attach themselves to the hero, slowing him down. They almost always appear in groups, and the more attached Smeeches the slower the player becomes. The hero can get rid of them by punching and kicking, although they will eventually regain their senses and go back at him. Yoshi also can't eat them, as trying to do so will only cause them to get attached to him instantly. Only Wario can defeat them with his punches. Otherwise, power-ups like Mega Mushroom or Rainbow Star are needed. Candy Cane Castle

One are little yellow ones that reflect the player off if the player touches one and can be defeated with any attack. There are green ones that are bigger than yellow ones that the player can jump off like a spring. The third one is called Spiky Topman. Items and Objects

Image Name Description
Caps SM64S Caps Grabbing a cap allows whomever possesses it to change his appearance and abilities to that of the cap's owner's (however, his voice will remain unchanged). In the early portion of the game, those kinds of Caps also act as 1-Up, as in, if Yoshi wears a Mario Cap and takes another Mario Cap, he will be awarded with a 1-Up. However, rescuing more heroes means more caps will appear and it will be impossible to find two caps of the same color.
Power Flower Red Power Flower A special item from which the heroes acquire unique abilities.

  • When Mario uses one, he becomes Balloon Mario, being able to float for a short time.
  • If Luigi uses it, he becomes Vanish Luigi, becoming partially immaterial and able to move through certain objects.
  • If Wario uses it, he becomes Metal Wario, gaining the ability to walk at normal speed underwater, as well as being able to withstand great winds.
  • When Yoshi uses one, he becomes Fire Yoshi, and gains fire breath that can melt ice and damage enemies.
  • When Toad uses it, he becomes Boulder Toad, gaining the ability to turn into a boulder and roll to crush enemies and destroy obstacles.
  • If Waluigi uses it, he becomes Poison Waluigi, being able to spin and release toxic clouds to damage most enemies and get rid of special obstacles.
WingFeather SM64S Wing Feather Grants Mario and friends the Wing Power, allowing them to fly with their given pair of wings until the time limit expires. To attain flight, the player must first perform a Triple Jump or be shot from a Cannon. Once in the air, the player must constantly raise and lower himself to maintain flight.
Coin SM64S Coin Coins are the most common items found in the game. They can be collected almost anywhere in courses, by defeating enemies, breaking objects, among other means. Coins restore the hero's lost health, as well as his oxygen when swimming underwater. Collecting 50 in a course grants the player a 1-up, while collecting 100 will reward them with a Power Star.
RedCoin SM64S Red Coin Each Red Coin is worth two Yellow Coins. Collecting all 8 Red Coins in one level makes a Power Star appear over a Star Marker. Some Bob-omb Buddies have the ability to detect red coins in whatever course they are in when the player talks to them.
BlueCoin SM64S Blue Coin Blue Coins are a special type of coin that are worth five Yellow Coins each. Blue Coins can be summoned by Ground Pounding a P-Switch, but only for a limited amount of time. Blue Coins can also be collected by defeating tougher enemies, such as a Piranha Plant, a Boo, Red Koopa Troopa, Big Goombas, Ninjis or a Mr. I. Additionally, when collected, Blue Coins are saved similarly to Power Stars, and are used to buy stuff from the shop in Toad Village.
PSwitchBlue P-Switch P-Switches replace Blue Coin Blocks from the original game and the DS remake, having the exact same effect when pressed. When the hero finds a P-Switch and Ground Pounds it, Blue Coins show up nearby. The player has a short time to gather the Blue Coins, after which they disappear. The switch cannot be reused. The amount of Blue Coins that appear varies greatly with each course, ranging from two to ten or more. It ends either when the time runs out, or when the player collects them all.
1-Up Mushroom Artwork - Super Mario 3D World 1-Up Mushroom 1-Up Mushrooms are green mushrooms that give the player an extra life. They can be found in a number of places, such as after going through or collecting a ring of coins. 1-Up Mushrooms are also found in hidden areas or on top of poles. Most will seemingly slide away from the hero, while others follow him until he collects it. Others are static, and the player can simply run up to the mushroom and collect it.
MegaMushroomSM3DW Mega Mushroom Mega Mushrooms are rare mushrooms that replace the Super Mushrooms from Super Mario 64 DS, as such, they make the characters grow extremely large for a limited time. This allows the characters to destroy objects or enemies simply by touching them. Yoshi and Toad, when receiving this power-up, throw punches like the others instead of using the tongue and roll abilities, respectively.
RainbowStar SM64S Rainbow Star The rarest power-up item in the game. When collected, it turns the hero invincible, causing him to become rainbow-colored and leave a trail of light behind him whenever he runs. In this form, he is invincible, can break through tougher objects and obstacles (such as Boulders), can run faster, and can jump both farther and higher. As the power-up begins to wear off, the music, along with the user's running speed, will get faster and faster until it wears off completely. They earn an extra life for each object or enemy that they destroy after the first eight.
BowserKey SM64S Bowser Key There are only two Bowser Keys in the game and they can be found in two Bowser's levels: Bowser in the Dark World and Bowser in the Fire Sea. The player gets them when Bowser is defeated. The keys can open doors of the Princess Peach's Castle: the first key opens the door of the castle's basement and the second key opens the door of the castle's upper floors.
MinigameKey SM64S Special Key Special Keys are keys that Rabbits steal. There are many rabbits that can be found in the game, and catching them and obtaining the stolen keys will allow the player to unlock minigames from the Rec Room's drawer's boxes. The only Special Keys that don't unlock minigames are the one obtained at the beginning of the game, given to Yoshi by MIPS, which unlocks Princess Peach's Castle, and the one given by the eight Glowing Rabbits after catching all of them to unlock the white door in the Character Selection room.
CharacterKeys SM64S Character Key Character Keys are special keys the player must collect that are held by five bosses (Goomboss, King Boo, Wingo, Chief Chilly and Petey Piranha), and are used to free Mario, Luigi, Toad, Wario and Waluigi, respectively by unlocking their corresponding doors in the Character Selection room.
PowerStar SM64S Power Star Power Stars are spread throughout the worlds, and the heroes are sent to go find them all. They must be collected in order to progress in the game. While there are now 200 Power Stars in the game, finding 100 is enough to be able to finally defeat Bowser.
SilverStar SM64S Silver Star Silver Stars are collectibles featured in some missions. In some levels, the player must collect five to get a Power Star. They are found in most courses. If a character gets damaged while holding one or more Silver Stars, he will lose one and it will scatter and bounce around the area nonstop. The player must catch it again to retrieve it.
BluePowerStar SM64S Taken Power Star A Power Star becomes slightly translucent and turns blue after being collected. As such, if the player chooses to play a mission that has been cleared already, the Power Star will take this look, and will not be considered in the Power Star count if grabbed again.
MK3DS Heart Spinning Heart The Spinning Heart is a pink heart that slowly revolves on the ground. When the player character runs through it, the Spinning Heart will quickly replenish his Health Meter in proportion to the speed with which he runs through it. Thus, the faster he runs through it, the more health he recovers.
QuestionBlockSM3DW ? Block Yellow ? Blocks are blocks found in most places in the game. Their contents vary depending on their location in a course. They usually contain items such as Coins, 1-Up Mushrooms, Green Koopa Shells or even Power Stars.
RedQuestionBlock SM64S Red ? Block They are initially transparent, and have to be activated by hitting the ? Switch in a secret level named after it. They contain Power Flowers, or Wing Feathers. If anyone other than Yoshi hits the Power Flower box without their caps, however, a Bob-omb will come out instead.
QuestionSwitch SM64S ? Switch The ? Switch appears in the secret level, which is also titled "? Switch". Like in Super Mario 64 DS, it serves mainly as a one-shot replacement to the original game's three ! Switches. Upon pressing the ? Switch, all Red ? Blocks in the game will become solid and can be broken open.
Green Shell Artwork - Super Mario 3D World Green Shell Green Shells can be obtained by hitting some yellow ? Blocks and punching some Koopas to get them out of their shell. They may appear behind some brick blocks as well. When the hero jumps on a Green Shell, he can travel at fast speed and ram into enemies to defeat them instantly. Riding a shell also allows the player to navigate over lava or water. Additionally, if the player grabs a Green Shell while underwater, he can hold the shell in front of him and use it to swim faster in water for a short period of time. Yoshi can also eat Green Shells and spit them out, although they disappear upon hitting a wall.
RedShell SM64S Red Shell Red Shells, unlike the green ones, can only be obtained by beating a Red Koopa Troopa, and cannot be found in ? Blocks. Also, Red Shells cannot be ridden on, instead, they work as projectiles after getting Red Koopas out of them. The shell can be grabbed and carried around to be thrown afterwards. Then, it essentially works like the Green Shell if spew by Yoshi, but this one will ricochet off walls a few times before disappearing.
Cannon Cannon Cannons are a vital gameplay element in the game. It is essentially used to fire the hero to previously unreachable areas. There is at least one cannon found in thirteen courses, as well as two secret stages. Each of the cannons that can be found throughout the games are under the control of Bob-omb Buddies. The player must successfully locate and talk to the Bob-omb Buddies in each course in order to access the cannon or cannons for that particular course. Until they do, the cannons will remain covered. The location of each Bob-omb Buddy becomes increasingly difficult to find as the player progresses through the game.
Brick Block Artwork - Super Mario 3D World Brick Bricks are blocks scattered throughout the game's various worlds and can be broken by most of the heroes' attacks. Some of them contain three Coins, a Green Shell or very rarely does a Brick contain a Mega Mushroom or a Rainbow Star. Anyone but Yoshi can break Bricks unless he has eaten a Mega Mushroom beforehand.
BlackBrick SM64S Black Brick Black Bricks are a special variant of Bricks that can only be destroyed by Wario (or anyone under the effects of a Mega Mushroom). Like Bricks, they hide items inside of them, but as they're harder to destroy, they usually contain special items such as a Red Coin, a Rainbow Star, a Power Star, or could even lead to another path or secret area.
Crate3DLand Crate Crates are small box items that can be picked up and thrown at an enemy, usually containing Coins. When thrown, they slide along the way in a straight line, and will break and release its contents upon contact with a wall or obstacle.
CrazedCrate SM64DS Crazed Crate Crazed Crates are beige boxes, with the same worried face on each side of it. If the hero grabs a Crazed Crate, the box bounces around three times in the direction the player is facing, with him holding on. The jumps get progressively higher. After the last jump, the crate explodes and five Coins appear. Crazed Crates can also bounce off of walls, which will not count as one of the three bounces.
IceBlockSMR Ice Block Ice Blocks only appear in the two snowy levels of the game: Cool, Cool Mountain and Snowman's Land. They can only be melted using Yoshi's power, by spitting fire on them.
Warp Pipe 3D Land Warp Pipe Warp Pipes are used to transport the player to the arena where Bowser is fought in Bowser in the Dark World and Bowser in the Sky. They're also used to transport the player to other areas in a few courses, and the pipes in Tiny-Huge Island, known as Shrinker Pipes, change the user's size, either making them much larger or much smaller than their surroundings.

Multiplayer

Co-op Mode

Super Mario 64 Switch introduces a cooperative multiplayer mode in the main story, which can be played with up to six players locally using six multiple consoles. In this mode, a new Character Selection screen appears after selecting a game file, from which players will be able to choose their characters before starting the game. If starting the game from zero, however, every player will start as Yoshi; the first player (host) plays as the default green, the second plays as Red Yoshi, the third plays as Blue Yoshi, the fourth plays as Yellow Yoshi, the fifth plays as Pink Yoshi and the sixth player plays as Light Blue Yoshi. Players will be able to select other characters if they've been unlocked already, if not, they will have to be unlocked.

VS Mode

Similarly to the VS Mode in Super Mario 64 DS, up to six players connect locally after VS Mode is selected, and the host player can select one of twelve stages available. Six of these stages are from the main story's secret courses plus the castle grounds. The other six are entirely new stages only available in VS Mode. Once the stage has been selected and the settings are changed, each player will fight and compete to get the most Power Stars and Coins within the time limit. After the round is finished, the results will show the ranks of the players with the most stars and coins. In this mode all characters are available in the first place.

Enemies and bosses are now faster and stronger, and they deal twice the damage. Some boss fights also receive small tweaks. Other ways of getting harmed such as touching lava or fire, falling from heights or drowning now deal twice the damage as well. Several Red Coin and Silver Star missions have their corresponding collectibles re-located in new areas of the courses. Cosmic Clone missions now feature extra clones that will mimic and follow the players around, making it more difficult for them to fight or chase the Cosmic Clone. Last but not least, Robo Mario appears in this mode as the true final boss, right after defeating Bowser in Bowser in the Sky.

Completing Deluxe Mode with all 200 Power Stars rewards the player by unlocking two things:

  • The Sound Room, a previously innaccessible room in the castle, in which the game's soundtrack, voice and sound clips can be heard. This room can be accessed from the main menu as well after being unlocked.
  • Boss Rush, a mode in which the player will be able to fight all the game's bosses consecutively in different arenas, from King Bob-omb to Robo Mario. Mid-bosses are not included. Clearing Boss Rush unlocks a a secret minigame in the Rec Room.

List of changes from the original and DS remake

Despite being a remake, Super Mario 64 Switch features several changes from the original, more than those seen in Super Mario 64 DS, even. This includes any new elements added to the game, components returning from the first remake, and elements from the original that were taken out in its remakes.

  • Toad and Waluigi are now playable characters, alongside Yoshi, Mario, Luigi and Wario, who were playable in Super Mario 64 DS. Only Mario was playable in the original, while Yoshi makes an unplayable cameo appearance on the Castle Roof after the original game is finished, and Toad was a supporting character.
  • Aside from only Mario like in the original, and both him and Yoshi in the DS remake, all the heroes' faces can now appear in the title screen of the game. Princess Peach and Bowser can also appear after the main game is 100% completed at least once.
  • The game brings back the 'face lifting' from the original game, rather than the 'drawing and stretching' from the DS remake.
  • Princess Peach has her usual loose hair like in the original game rather than tied in a ponytail as seen in the DS remake.
  • Princess Peach's Castle has been slightly redesigned, resembling both the castle seen in the original game and the DS remake, but also the one seen in the Super Mario Galaxy games. The windows are completely different, it featues a balcony in front of the fresco, among other small differences.
  • The castle grounds now feature bushes, more trees and overall more nature than its previous iterations. It also has different fences, and the small maze garden seen in the DS remake is now much bigger. The biggest change, however, is the addition of the Toad Village, similar to the one seen in Super Mario Galaxy, albeit slightly smaller and with a few differences. Rather than arriving right at the castle grounds, the heroes now arrive at Toad Village at the beginning, and go towards the castle from there.
  • The Toads inside the castle are all colored differently now, featuring red, blue, green, yellow and purple Toads. The Toad in the main hall has been replaced by Toadsworth, while the one that hosts the Rec Room is replaced by Toadette.
  • Bob-omb Buddies wear red shoes similarly to the ones seen in the DS remake. However, they now lack a fuse, like in the original game, and have a silver turning knob similarly to the foe Bob-ombs. Their new design is essentially a mix of their look in Super Mario 64 DS and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  • Coach replaces the Big Penguin seen in Cool, Cool Mountain before the slide.
  • More TBA.

Trivia

  • The artwork of Waluigi in the box art shows him carrying a normal bomb, rather than a Bob-omb. However, no regular bombs are found in the game.
    • The same render in the Japanese box art, however, has Waluigi carrying a Bob-omb.
  • Unlike Super Mario 64 DS, the entrance to Jolly Roger Bay uses the sunken ship painting seen in all overseas releases of the original Super Mario 64, rather than the Japanese one.
  • It is possible to make Princess Peach and Bowser's faces appear apart from the heroes' faces in the title screen after the game is 100% completed in one of the game files.
