Squirtle is a returning playable character, first appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and reappearing in Super Smash Bros. Calamity along with Ivysaur without Pokémon Trainer with him, like how Charizard wasn't with Pokémon Trainer in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Wii U/3DS.
Just like Ivysaur in this game and Charizard in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Wii U/3DS, Squirtle is no longer with Pokémon Trainer, this means most of Squirtle's moveset is changed, mostly its Pokémon Change down special.
Up smash is stronger.
New up aerial, a tail flip similar to Pikachu's and Pichu's up aerial.
Waterfall is stronger.
New down special, Bubble, which is very useful for spacing and stopping frontal approaches.
