Splatoon: Fresh Paint (Japanese スプラトゥーンフレッシュペイント Supuratūn Furesshupeinto) is a third-person shooter game developed and published by Nintendo, released worldwide May 2017 like its predecessor. In this game, you can play as either an Inkling or an Octoling and compete in turf wars, trying to cover ground in your colored ink. There are several different new features that the previous game didn’t have, giving the game an endless amount of cool, fun content.

A few years after DJ Octavio was defeated and the Great Zapfish was returned to Inkopolis, the Octolings finally decided to live in harmory with the inklings and other creatures above the surface. Since then, they have worked together peacefully and helped reconstruct Inkopolis into the new and improved Inktopia. However, during the construction, DJ Octavio’s sea globe is accidentally broken, and he hides in Octo Valley. Though he did not cause any trouble at first, one day the mayor of Inktopia, Angela, disappeared. Everyone knew that this was the work of DJ Octavio, and they had to track him down and rescue the mayor.

With Capp’n Cuttlefish gone, his granddaughters Callie and Marie must be in control of the rescue mission. They call upon you to be the successor of Agent 3, since they were your parent after all, having faith that you will have just as much skill as they did. The popstar cousins ask for you to meet them in Octo Valley, where you will begin your journey.

Splatoon: Fresh Paint is a primarily team-based third person shooter that is playable by up to eight players in online four-versus-four matches called turf wars. You are now allowed to play alongside one other person in the online with a split screen, though the second player will be listed as a guest, and they cannot earn you any experience. The second player is allowed to play on either the NX controller or Wii U gamepad, but they cannot use the same controller as the first player.

Since the NX Controller does not have a screen, a few of the controls had to be changed. You have the option of either using gyro controls or stick controls to move your camera, but the button controls to shoot ink, use your sub weapon, change into a squid, move, and jump are the same. However, things such as super jumping and choosing the location of an ink strike have been changed. In the corner of your screen is a map of the stage. Your teammates are listen by various directions on the D-Pad. In order to jump to them, you must hit the corresponding direction on the D-Pad. These directions are always either right, up, or left. If you want to jump back to spawn, you press the down direction.

Next, we have Hero Story Mode. This is similar to the single player mode in the original Splatoon game. This time around, you can also have one person play with you in split screen mode and help you through the story, though they will be playing as a default inkling or octoling. These characters will share the same health bar, and when the health bar goes down to zero, the person who died will not respawn and the person still alive will only have one chance to beat the level or else you will have to start over. Also, all upgrades you purchase in single player mode will benefit both players.

Along with the online turf wars, there is an offline mode as well. If you are unable to play online, you can simply play along with three randomly generated teammates and face off against four randomly generated opponents. You can also set their difficulties. The difficulty of the AI will affect their gear, weapons, and overall intelligence in aiming, covering certain terrain, ect. Also, when playing offline, you will have all weapons unlock. However, you cannot level up when playing online or level up any gear.

New Features

Character Customization

The character customization in Splatoon: Fresh Paint has improved greatly since the first game. Now, at the start of the game, you are allowed to play as either an Inkling or Octoling. There are now also male and female octolings (this is the first time you can see them without their mask on). You are also allowed to choose your eye color off of a color wheel, giving you a vast variety of eye colors. Then, you are also allowed to change your height, weight, and skin color, though none of these will affect your gameplay. Other small details include freckles and birthmarks. You can always change any of these features later on in your Squid Condo by looking in the mirror and selecting "Change Appearance".

In Seaside Outlet, there is a Splatique where you can buy different hair styles for your inkling or octoling. You can only change your hairstyle once a day, and it costs 5,000 sand dollars. The more you level up, the more hair styles there will be unlocked. All hairstyles are unlocked at level 20.

Squid Condos

At the start of the game, your squid is in their new condo outside of Inktopia. Of coarse, since you just moved there, your condo is pretty empty. However, there's no need to worry, because you will be able to buy furniture from a shop in Booyah Base. You can also get rare furniture from Fresh Supply Drops.

Loot Boxes

By leveling up in Splatoon, you can earn Sea Snail Shells and buy Loot Boxes. These loot boxes will either have common, fresh, super fresh, or legendary items. These items can be either be furniture, voice lines, graffiti, exclusive gear, or taunts. You can either spend 1 Sea Snail Shell to get three random drops, or 5 to get a guaranteed rare item. If you get a duplicate item, depending on the rareness, it will be substituted for sand dollars.

Inktopia is the new and improved city where Inklings, Octolings, and jellyfish live in Splatoon: Fresh Paint'. It is much bigger than the original city, having different open world sections, such as Seaside Outlet and Maritime Museum. You can also ride the train to get to your condo outside the city.

Seaside Outlet

To the Northeast of Inktopia is the Seaside Outlet. This is an upgrade from Booyah Base, having all of the old shops as well as new ones. Unlike Booyah Base, the Seaside Outlet is a separate open-world area from Inktopia, with a fountain in the center. Along with the variety of shops, there is a food court, theater, and arcade.

Inktopia Brands

There are several different brand makers in Inktopia. These companies make different types of tops, pants, hats, and shoes. Gear with certain brands have a higher chance of giving you an ability and a lower chance of giving you another.

So far, there is only one new brand in Inktopia: Cawawi. The Cawawi Brand specializes in cute clothing for both boys and girls. They have a high chance of giving you the Bomb Range UP ability on your gear, and a lower chance of giving you the Fire Rate Up ability.
