The Sonic the Hedgehog series is a media franchise, first originating from a series of platforming games, but later expanding into other game genres and media, such as TV shows, movies, and comics. The first game to feature the titular Sonic the Hedgehog was created by Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Naka. The games became wildly popular, rivaling the Nintendo mascot Mario. The games are often platformers, featuring Sonic fighting the robotic forces of his nemesis, Doctor Eggman, to defend Mobius. He is joined by a large host of friends and allies, such as Sallly Acorn, Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles the Echidna. Villians aside from Dr. Eggman include the Babylon Rogues, Metal Sonic, and Mephiles the Dark. They have a team in the Fantendo Football League, called Team Sonic FC.

Since his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic has been a fan-favorite for Super Smash Bros. games and has been included in many of them and in the canceled Super Smash Bros. Revolution, Sonic was a character along with Green Hill Zone as a stage and in the original version of Super Smash Bros. Clash, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were going to be playable, but the series involvement in the new version is unknown. Sonic was rumoured to be playable in Super Smash Bros Melee
