Sonic Axis is a 3D Sonic the Hedgehog title developed collaboratively between SEGA's Sonic Team and Nintendo subsidiary Ninkancho for the Display system. The game is meant as proof that Sonic can work in a fully three-dimensional game setting. The game stars Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Ray the Flying Squirrel as playable characters, each with different abilities and moves.
Little is currently known about the plot, but it is confirmed to explain the cause of Rings and Ring Energy.
The controls of Sonic Axis are most similar to those of the Sega Genesis trilogy. is used to make the player character walk, and holding the pad in a particular direction will make them gradually accelerate until they begin running. As for face buttons, activates a Spin Jump, and start the character's special attack. Pressing will make the character crouch, at which point they will roll if running, or will be able to Spin Dash when still by pressing . Additionally, pressing in midair will activate the Homing Attack.
When the player character is running quickly, the camera will center behind them and the movement controls will change. Moving horizontally will rotate the character exclusively to the left or right, as in a driving game; moving it vertically will adjust the character's speed, allowing them to slow down or speed up even more.
