SimpLE Sequence and Waveform Manipulation Program, SSaWMP /sɒmp/ for short, is a free, open-source digital audio workstation included with the SimpLE operating system. It is also available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. The program uses interface elements and structures taken from several DAWs as well as GIMP to provide a comprehensive and easy-to-use layout.

SSaWMP is used to manipulate sequenced and waveform files of a variety of types, and can even try to create a sequence based on an image of sheet music. Projects are saved in the proprietary SSAW file format, and can be exported as sequences or waveforms themselves.

The main part of the window is occupied by track content. A list of tracks lines the left side of this area, and dropdowns here allow for the quick choosing between the main track audio, volume and panning, and effects. Tracks are comparable to layers in image editing programs, stacking from the bottom up and being capable of modifying the output of tracks below. When track audio is selected, regions are visible and can be selected by clicking. When an effect is selected, its automation curve is visible. Right-clicking a track displays options such as duplicating it and flattening it into a compressed waveform.

To the left is the soundfont picker, which allows for the switching, adjustment, and sampling of the current sequence track's soundfont; or the generation and recording of audio into the current waveform track. Effect options are listed above, again from bottom to top, in the same area. Parameters can be adjusted via sliders, textboxes, and other controls if their automation is at a constant value.

Along the bottom of the window is an area that displays the currently-selected region in expanded form, and allows for direct sequence and waveform editing. If a selection spans more than one region, then all on the current track will be shown there.

Track blend modes

Effects affect the output audio of a track according to several parameters, which can be automated. If an effect is added while a selection is active, the effect will be added to all selected or partially-selected tracks, with the wetness parameter set to 100% under the selected region and 0% elsewhere. Effects are usually phrased as nouns named according to their function. As follows are the default effects included.

  • Amplifier
  • Equalizer
  • Compressor
  • Expander
  • Limiter
  • Noise Gate
  • Tremolo
  • Distortion
  • Overdrive

  • Pitch Shift
  • Lowpass
  • Highpass
  • Bandpass
  • Band Reject
  • Wah
  • Harmonizer

  • Reverse
  • Time Stretch
  • Delay
  • Reverb
  • Reverse Reverb
  • Phaser
  • Flanger
  • Chorus

Filters are tools that take a selection as input, and then replace the selection with a new region according to a function on the input. This is in contrast with effects, which affect a track's output in realtime. The concept is based on filters in GIMP; both involve adjusting parameters before applying the filter to overwrite the selection. Filters are usually phrased as verbs according to their function. As follows are the default filters included.

  • Reverse Sequence
  • Quantize
  • Follow Key
  • Shepard Tone

  • Reverse Waveform
  • Swap Stereo Channels
  • Invert
  • Fade In
  • Fade Out
  • Pitch Correct
