The Sens is a tenth-generation home video game console released by Sens Inc and Nintendo in 2020. The Sens introduced the sole scene, by utilizing an eye tracker in the controller and another in a Sensor Bar to track the user's gaze and allow them to interact with the game using it.

History[]

In 2017, a group of indie developers, then known as Get a Grip games, the team behind Missileball for Nintendo Switch, announced that they were working on a "hardware project" alongside Tobii, the company that made the Tobii EyeX eye-tracking system. At E3 in 2018, the concept of a console dedicated to eye-tracking was pitched to investors by Get a Grip games, now known as Sens Inc. Nintendo also revealed that they would be making games for the console. At E3 2019, a prototype was finally shown off to fans of the long-awaited project. Finally, on April 15th, 2020, the console was released worldwide.

Features[]

Eye Tracking[]

Eye Tracking is the primary feature of the Sens. One eye tracker is located on the controller, while another is located in a Sensor Bar which is attached to a TV screen or monitor; this allows for maximum accuracy. It can be used to control the character, the camera, and many other things. It works similarly to the mouse on a computer in this respect.

Interface[]

The interface of the Sens is highly customisable and contains three default versions, plus many more downloadable ones. Developers can even make their own and share them on the eShop. All versions are able to store digital copies of games, have multiple users, and contain an eShop and many apps (such as Camera, Album, and Sens Chat).

Expansion Packs[]

The Sens also utilizes peripherals known as "Expansion Packs". Expansion Packs are simple modifications that connect to the Sens console and boost its capabilities. This idea is vital as the Sens alone does not have very much power (due to the high price of eye-tracking equipment). Up to four Expansion Packs can be connected to the console.

Reception[]

While the Sens was met with very positive reception, its success was affected by its high price (due to the cost of accurate eye-tracking technology). Overall, it was relatively popular, selling 20 million units, and briefly made Sens Inc. a new competitor to the big three of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.
