Rotten Mushrooms are edible power-downs used by Mario, Luigi, and other playable characters in the Mario series. They follow Mario and work similarly to a Poison Mushroom. They replace 1-Up Mushrooms in the night versions of Super Mario Maker 2 courses.
Description[]
Rotten Mushrooms are Mushrooms with a macabre theming, gaining a pink cap with a skull pattern across it as well as a crack on the top of their head. In the cap, two empty holes appear on the front of the mushroom and the bottom is chipped to resemble a skull. They have yellow eyes and a sickly blue color for the stem. Rotten Mushrooms have a purple aura around them and pulse as they follow Mario.
Function[]
Rotten Mushrooms will follow Mario, and can bounce to get up on higher ground. They damage Mario when he makes contact with them, acting similar to Poison Mushrooms in function. They replace 1-Up Mushrooms in the night versions of levels, making them their nocturnal counterpart. They can be chased off by the effects of a Star and give 1000 points when defeated as Invincible Mario.

Mario Kart: Infinity Remix[]
Rotten Mushrooms appear in Mario Kart: Infinity Remix as items that can be obtained in the higher positions. When placed on the track, they will travel in a circle, and if a driver comes close to one, the Rotten Mushroom will home in on them. Should a driver touch one, they will shrink for a short time.
Trivia[]
- Rotten Mushrooms can be defeated as Invincible Mario. They even run away when they see Mario in the invincible state.
- Even when run through a Starman chain, they still do not give a 1-Up bonus. They will always award 1000 points as opposed to a escalating number of points.
