Makeela Riju (Japanese: マキ・ア・ルージュ Maki-a Rouge), commonly referred to as Lady Riju or simply Riju (Japanese: ルージュ Rouge), is a major supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Riju is a young girl who became the chief of the Gerudo after her mother passed away suddenly.
As a descendant of the Gerudo chieftain bloodline she can use the Thunder Helm to its full extent, which she has mastered quite well. Additionally, as it is stated that the male Gerudo born once ever 100 years will become the tribe's ruler, it can be assumed that she is a descendant of Ganondorf.
Physical Appearance[]
Riju is a young girl who shares many of the traits commonly seen within the Gerudo tribe (darker skin tone, red hair, and sharp noses). Like the other Gerudo from Breath of the Wild (but not previous games), Riju has pointed ears similar to those of a Hylian, as well as emerald green eyes.
Riju wears a lot of golden jewellery, symbolizing her status as the Gerudo Chief, including a large neckpiece with a ruby embedded within it, an elaborate headpiece and crown, a choker, two armbands, two bracelets, two bands around her ankles, and a belt. She wears a sleeveless black shirt with green and blue circular designs that is cut above her abdomen, as well as a black and white skirt. During the attack on the Divine Beast Vah Naboris, as well as after Link retrieves it from the Yiga Clan, Riju also wears the Gerudo heirloom known as the Thunder Helm.
Personality[]
Riju is a caring ruler of her people, however due to her circumstances Riju has a sort of inferiority complex. Because she was chosen to ascend to the Gerudo throne while still a child, she believes she may not be the best ruler for the Gerudo, and struggles to try and be like her late mother. As Link assists her and the Gerudo people she slowly gains more confidence in herself, going from worrying that every event that plagues her tribe may be her fault, to striving to doing the best that she can.
As she is still a child, Riju is shown to be slightly immature and childish at times, belying her status as the Gerudo's chief. She has a very cute side to her and has a near-obsessive love with Sand Seals, going so far to having her own Sand Seal named Patricia, who is treated as a fortune teller. In her room are a number of different Sand Seal-esque plush toys, as well. Riju's playfulness is shown prominently when she first dons the Thunder Helm after Link retrieves it from the Yiga, specifically asking him about how it looks on her. Additionally, she appears willing to go against the established rules if need be; as shown through the fact that voe are forbidden from entering the vai-filled Gerudo Town, yet permits Link's entry.
