Like Borderlands, each game has a unique cast of four playable characters, each with their own strengths and abilities that define the ideal strategies for playing as them in battle. However, the game swaps DLC characters for cross-compatibility between games, with players being able to play any of the games with any of the characters from the Raiders games that they own. For example, if a player owned Broken World and its sequel, they would be able to play through Broken World as Plum or Nicolas.
The Hero. Unten himself is a well-rounded character, best at mid-range combat using assault rifles. However, his real strength lies in the skills which he can unlock, which allow him to boost the performance of his allies in various ways. Players using Unten are advised to stay on the front lines with the the more close-range-oriented allies, sticking to cover and offering buffs and healing. Unten's Action Skill, Fanti Charge, summons up his faithful companion Fanti to release an electrical stream that steadily zaps at enemies. More importantly, however, it restores the health and shields of nearby allies. Either way, it is a dependable technique.
The Stalker. Zerita is incredibly unpredictable, being able to navigate rough terrain better than her piers and approach enemies quickly for fast melee strikes from any direction. Players using Zerita are advised that her place can be at the very front lines... or at the very back, getting around enemies for an ambush from another direction. Either way, they mostly do their own thing. Zerita's Action Skill, On The Prowl, completely negates her ability to wield guns temporarily, but gains an incredibly boost in mobility and melee power, as well as the ability to sense enemies through walls. Use the ability to sneak past enemies or break through them.
The Mercenary. Ridge is a quick-witted fighter who doesn't mind playing dirty. If anything, that's his main strategy! This character excels at taking advantage of enemies' weaknesses. Players using Ridge are advised to keep their eye on the environment, as their ability to take advantage of the battlefield is their ultimate power. Their ability to manipulate it and weaknesses are key to survival. Ridge's Action Skill, Critical Cheat, causes them to automatically lock on to enemies. In addition, all strikes become critical hits, so be sure to take advantage of Ridge's wide variety of skills that enhance his critical strikes.
The Cleric. Piper is a long-distance character who specializes in aiding allies from the edge of the battlefield. Be it sniping or healing, she is ultimately a support character. Players using Piper are advised to stay as far from battle as possible and heal allies using skills that turns their ammunition into healing rounds. Or, alternatively, hit foes with sniping attacks from afar. Piper's Action Skill, Tombstone Cross, decreases the total damage taken by attacks. In addition, after this decrease in damage, half of the damage taken by allies is inflicted on Piper instead. Allies' kills count towards Piper's Second Winds, fortunately.
The Vagabond. Plum, similarly to Unten, acts as a well-rounded offense/support character who excels at aiding and assaulting. However, Plum's focus is more on close-range pistol weapons and elemental effects, especially the ice element. Players using Plum are advised to stay close to the front lines, where they can easily give enemies a bad time using elemental status ailments. Plum's Action Skill, Hypothermal, boosts the defenses of the whole team. More importantly, however, Plum's weaponry is replaced by a frosty force that she is able to hurl at enemies to freeze them solid, leaving them especially vulnerable to fire-element rounds from allies.
The Freak. Nicolas is a close-range fighter who specializes in dealing with multiple enemies at once using Area-Of-Effect techniques and shield-deplenishing abilities to aid allies. Players using Nicolas are advised to stay on the very front lines, within range of the hordes of enemies and armed with plenty of short-range weapons, preferably with an electrical element, with which to dish out plenty of damage. Nicolas' Action Skill, Shock Barrage, releases a powerful electrical shock that deals damage and wipes out the shields of all enemies in range. Allies caught in the charge will gain a shield boost and a temporary electrical element.
The Sniper. Naira's specialty is manipulating the behavior of enemies to change the flow of the battle. By turning enemies against each other or hallucinations, or even pacifying and recruiting wildlife, she changes the balance of the battle. Players using Naira are advised to stay back, not kill wildlife, and to take advantage of the large numbers of enemies before they die. Naira's Action Skill, Ghost's Fingers, allows her to temporarily take control of an enemy. With this, they can turn the enemies' strongest troops against them and redefine "turning the tide." Unfortunately, it doesn't work on MLG enemies or enemies of a higher level.
The Android. What little strategy there is to Krox can be summarized in a single sentence: Shatter enemies with sheer badass and lots of bullets. This close-to-mid-range monster is tough as nails! Just be careful not to kill your friends. Players using Krox aren't given any advice, save for "go crazy." The character is all about lots of bullets and explosions. Krox's Action Skill, #2880KaBoomScope, transforms him into a tornado of grenades. Enemies are pulled into the tornado automatically, and the explosions resulting in contact with the grenades can blow them apart. For enemies out of the tornado's range, players can also fire explosive ammo.
The Grenadier. Kaio is essentially Unten with explosives. He specializes in grenades, grenade launchers, and explosive weapons, which he uses to blow apart enemy ranks to give allies an easy time. Players using Kaio are advised to stay on the front lines, within grenade-throwing range, and to always carry an extra assault rifle or pistol when their grenade launcher inevitably runs out of ammunition. Kaio's Action Skill, Monocle Madness, transforms his standard attack into a high-power laser that cuts through shields, armor, and flesh with incredible ease. He also gains a secondary that allows him to throw prism-like grenades, of which he has infinite ammunition.
The Beast. Lina is a melee tank who specializes in dishing out close-range damage while stealing the attention of enemies with her incredible Health. Players using Lina are advised to stick to the front lines, both to dish out severe melee damage and to make up for her lack of ranged proficiency. When not on the front lines, players can still act as human shields for allies. Lina's Action Skill, Outcast's Rage, boosts her already-amazing melee power to even greater heights at the cost of ranged attacks. But in addition, any damage she takes while in this mode will increase the power of her melee attacks, which means storming enemies with reckless abandon is recommended.
The Specter. Tengu is a combination of melee and range, being able to swiftly assassinate enemies using special melee skills or to slowly pick them off of the battlefield with the trusty aim of a sniper rifle. Players using Tengu are told to fight where and how they please, so long as they avoid working in a large party. Tengu's Action Skill, Smoke & Murder, is a technique that allows the player to teleport across the battlefield with the push of a button, damaging any enemies in their path. This Action Skill is unique in that it can be used even without full charge (albeit with less teleport range as a result), offering possible hit-and-run strategies with Tengu.
The Program. Polli's specialty is unpredictability. At her most basic, she's a middle-lines fighter who specializes in assault rifles. At her most complex, however, she can provide allies with every manner of status buff. Players using Polli are told to act natural and aid allies with their complex buff skills. Polli's Action Skill, Adapt Protocol, is basically identical to Claptrap's VAULTHUNTER.exe - the situation is analyzed, and one of several "Protocols" is selected to help. These Protocols usually transform Polli so that her stats mimic another hero, such as causing her to automatically scope in and fire on enemies' weak points, similarly to Ridge.
