065Alakazam

Alakazam, an example of a Psychic-type Pokémon.

The Psychic type is one of the eighteen official types from the Pokémon franchise. The Psychic type is generally popular as a type for special sweepers: high Special Attack, high Special Defense and swell Speed. Pokémon like Alakazam are especially popular because of this. Psychic type Pokémon are usually not good physical attackers or defenders, though.

Their main strength is against the Fighting type. Psychic has a natural resistance against Fighting, and Fighting is incredibly weak to Psychic. Psychic also resists its own type, and Psychic attacks hit incredibly well against Poison.

It has an interesting history with the Ghost type. Psychic types are supposed to be weak against Ghost attacks, but erroneously, Psychic was immune against it instead. Since at the time, the only Ghost types were also part Poison, and the only other weakness of Psychic, Bug, was incredibly weak itself, the Psychic type was incredibly overpowered. Since many Grass Pokémon were Poison-type as well, Grass wasn't a good idea to use against Psychic either. This was later corrected: Psychic is no longer Immune to Ghost, there were more Grass types that aren't Poison-typed, and two types were introduced: the incredibly defensive Steel type, and the biggest weakness to Psychic: the Dark type. Dark was immune to Psychic, and in contrast to Steel, Dark moves are super effective against Psychic as well.

As of Generation 6, there are 75 official Psychic type Pokémon in existence, making it the 5th most common type, also sliding it in a category of uncommon types. There are a bunch of dual-typed Pokémon, and while primary Psychic-types aren't rare at all, the secondary Psychic-type is more common compared to the other. There is a total of 32 pure Psychic type Pokémon.

Akin to Poison, Psychic covers a vast amount of subjects, but most of them appear to be paranormal. A vast variety appear to take a humanoid appearance and are in the Human-Like egg group, but another amount appears to take the form of supernatural, mythical animals. There are also quite an amount of Psychic Pokémon that are best described as "mysterious". The abilities of these Pokémon are beyond ordinary as well: Pokémon like Xatu and Gothitelle are able to see the future, but others like Drowzee rather eat people's dreams. Almost all Psychic-type Pokémon are intellectual, but there are exceptions, the most common one being Slowpoke.

Trivia[]

  • The three weaknesses of Psychic (Ghost, Dark and Bug) are likely based on three of the most common human fears (being haunting ghosts, evil itself and creepy-crawlies like spiders). The reason why this is so likely is because Psychic is largely based on the mind.
    • This is further utilized with some fanon types, with Psychic-types being weak to Sound-type, Demon-type, etc.
