Popple, about to fight Mario and Luigi for the third time in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Popple is a thief hailing from the Beanbean Kingdom that first appeared in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga as a supporting character, fought a total of four times in the game, usually alongside another character, though in the third battle he is fought alone. He is very sneaky, and is known for having tendencies of saying "see?" at the end of most sentences, which is a common verbal tic for stereotypical thugs and mobsters. He is also commonly found with his sidekick, Rookie, but who Rookie is often changes. His first known Rookie was Bowser, who had suffered amnesia after one of the Starshade Bros. fired him from a cannon (and later revealed that he suffered from amnesia after Captain Goomba stomped on his head its 3DS remake's Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser sidestory). However, after he and Bowser separated in the aftermath of their second battle with Mario and Luigi, Birdo became the new Rookie. After Popple was defeated again, he blames Birdo for their loss and fires her, causing her to grow angry with him and knock him all the way to Little Fungitown, where he is then sentenced to community service, with his supervisor ironically calling him "Rookie".

It should be noted during his first, second and final battle, if Rookie (during the first and second battle) or Birdo (during the final battle) are defeated before Popple, he will attack one more time before the fleeing the battle.

He later reappears in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team with a much more minor role. He does not seem to remember the bros once they first encounter him in Wakeport after a failed robbery of the Pi'illoper's house, and when they meet up again near Wiggler's garden later on in the game. He is also seen on two tours in Driftwood Shore and Mount Pajamaja; in the former he leaves due to the lack of treasure, and in the latter he is kicked out by the Massif Bros., who say there is no room for [Popple]. When Mario and Luigi meet up with him again at some Pi'illo ruins in Wakeport, Popple start calling the bros "rookies" and force them into a battle with Wiggler by insulting it. After [Wiggler] is defeated, Popple turns on them, aiming to claim Pi'illoper's treasure for himself, however, he himself is defeated afterwards. He then realizes that Wiggler was not a security, and that he fought over a "stupid flower garden". He is then chased away by the enraged Wiggler for insulting the flowers, declaring he has had enough of Pi'illo Island while being chased.

Appearances[]

Mario & Luigi: Sibling Warfare[]

Popple is the main rival to the Wario Bros. in Mario & Luigi: Sibling Warfare. When Wario and Waluigi find a powerful gem that has a large amount of dark power in it, Popple steals the gem, thinking that it is worth millions of Coins, not knowing the danger that he and the Mushroom Kingdom are in.

Trivia[]

  • In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a reference to Popple is made when Bowser visits Poshley Sanctum to steal the Garnet Star. When Pennington asks him who he is, one of the answers is "The Shadow Thief", which is what Popple calls himself. Also, if the player selects this title, Bowser will say "I'll be taking this, thanks!", a reference to Popple's "I'll be takin' that, see?" quote.
  • Despite him appearing in only three games, Popple is fought a total of seven unique times (four times in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, once in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and two times in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser) making him the most fought character in the whole Mario & Luigi series (with the exception of the different forms of Bowser).
