Pokeys are cactus-like enemies that appear in many games in the Super Mario series. They are yellow and spherical in appearance, and are covered in various spikes. The number of segments a Pokey has varies from Pokey to Pokey: they have also been known to be able to throw their segments as an attack mechanism. The top segment of the Pokey is where its face is located, always displaying a dashing but somewhat unsettling smile.
They are usually seen with spikes on their heads, but some sub-species have flowers. These can be jumped on, except for in New Super Mario Bros. If Mario throws a fireball at Pokey, one of its segments will fall off. However, if the fireball connects with the Pokey's head, all of its segments will disperse at once. Pokeys were first seen in Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World, existing as prominent foes in both games under the sovereignty of Wart and Bowser.
Pokeys appear in the stage Yoshi Desert in Super Mario MHL.
Pokey appears in Super Smash Bros. Insanity as a playable character. He can be unlocked by fighting on any stage five times in a row, or reaching level twelve in story mode.
Pokey appears as a heavy weight driver in Koopa Kart.
A Pokey known as Skull-Pokey appears as a boss in World 2: Deserted Desert.
- In Super Mario World, there's one level with four Pokeys on different hills. If Yoshi eats all of these Pokeys' segments aside from their heads, the player can create a four-headed Pokey.
- Pokeys have been shown to reproduce by pulling new Pokeys out of the desert sands.
