Pokémon is a series of role-playing games in which Trainers collect, battle, and raise the titular Pokémon. The core series is the central part of the colossal Pokémon media franchise, determining the new Pokémon species that are designed and revealed.
Pokémon games that start their respective generations introduce a new region of the Pokémon world, three new starter Pokémon, Legendary Pokémon that usually serve as game mascots, and various human characters. These games are released in paired versions, containing some different Pokémon and other alterations, encouraging players to trade Pokémon between versions to complete their collections. They can be supplanted by updated third versions or sequels, remakes of games from previous generations, and various spinoffs. Many fans criticize the paired- and third-version practices, and so create their fangames as singular versions.
The series is developed by Game Freak with rights managed by various companies. It is published by Nintendo, and considered a flagship series alongside Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and the like.
