Hailing from a continuity where it's existed as a Smash Bros. character for nearly 50 years (as opposed to the Day 1 vendor trash DLC seen in real life), Piranha Plant (Japanese: パックンフラワー Pakkun Flower) is a (nonetheless just as hated and controversial) playable character on Super Smash Stadium. It debuted alongside Super Trash Stadium.
In its own universe[]
While many plumbers will see crazy things in pipes over their lifetimes, none have seen quite what Mario has seen. The pipes of the Mushroom Kingdom are often clogged with Piranha Plants, vicious carnivorous plants that will try to take a bite out of Mario should he pass over the pipes they inhabit. Traditionally, Mario cannot kill the Piranhas by jumping on them, but he can use other methods. Starting with Super Mario Bros. 3, Piranha Plants may occasionally be seen outside of pipes, and multiple varieties of them will exist; that game alone debuted fireball-spitting Venus Firetraps, spiked ball-spitting Ptooie Plants, and the near-invincible Munchers.
Piranhas originally had green heads; The Lost Levels debuted their traditional red color, which started appearing in World 4-1. Piranhas in other colors have been seen in many other games since (although blue Piranhas appeared as early as Super Mario Bros. 1 thanks to NES color limitations). Strangely enough, piped Piranhas will not attack Mario when he's standing right on top of their pipes, even though that would be a prime opportunity to bite him down.
Attributes[]
Piranha Plant in this game appears in a clay flowerpot rather than a pipe, similar to an item seen in Mario Kart 8/Deluxe. Unfortunately, that pot may be more of a hindrance than anything else. Despite being a lightweight character, it plays like a heavyweight, as that pot makes it slow and gives it clunky movement. It also can't jump very high and doesn't play well in the air. Therefore, its game revolves around using its projectile special moves as anti-air tools to bring the rest of the cast down to the ground, where it can then beat opponents down with its good ground game. Its grab range is short, but its grab comes out fast and anyone who gets grabbed probably won't escape.
Changes[]
- Before Season 21: Its pot actually resembled a pipe, à la the King of World 7 in the original NES version of Super Mario Bros. 3.
- Season 36-39: The floatiness of SSS's "Brawl Era", as well as the lack of hitstun and the existence of tripping, hurt Piranha Plant big time. Only Ganondorf suffered worse.
Moveset[]
Entrance: Similar to the rest of the Mario cast, but it pops out of its pot rather than a pipe.
Move Name | Description |
---|---|
Forward Smash:
Prickly Piranha |
Piranha Plant turns into precisely that enemy from the Super Mario Galaxy games and headbutts.
Kills at 65% sweetspotted, 85% sour. |
Back Air:
Fire Breath |
Piranha Plant turns into a Venus Firetrap and spews precisely that at opponents. Strong, but very slow.
Kills at 85%. |
Neutral Special:
Ptooie Plant |
Piranha Plant pukes up a spiked ball and keeps it in the air for as long as you hold down . Shield to drop the move, or release the button to have Piranha Plant throw it at opponents with a headbutt; use to steer it.
Kills at 75%. |
Side Special:
Putrid Piranha |
Piranha Plant turns into precisely that and spews out a poison cloud in front of it. The move can be charged and saved for later; it reaches full charge in five seconds. Does great damage, but no knockback.
Cannot kill. |
Up Special:
Piranhacopter |
Piranha Plant spins its arms like a helicopter, propelling itself upward. Lasts five seconds. Anyone who touches the arms takes minor damage.
Cannot kill. |
Down Special:
Long Stem Strike |
Piranha Plant retreats into its pot, then bites opponents up to half a Final Destination's length away. Use to aim. Can be charged for up to five seconds; the more Piranha Plant charges the move, the further away it can reach; however, doing so exposes its stem, which is extremely vulnerable. Maximum damage is 30%.
Kills at 65%. |
Final Smash:
The Family |
Multiple pipes appear on the stage (as much as 50 of them in the 10 seconds this move lasts), and Piranha Plants shoot out of those pipes in overwhelming numbers to bite, flame, ink, ice, and spike opponents wildly. Each hit is weak; this move's power comes from sheer numbers and how difficult it is to defend against so many Piranha Plant attacks at once. At the end, Petey Piranha slams down and spews sludge everywhere, dealing the finishing blow. The sludge color is dependent on its costume.
Ashley Variant: Shouts "Let's dance!" at the beginning of the move, then de-transforms and spews the sludge via paintball guns before turning back into Piranha Plant. Petey kills at 50%; the Piranhas kill at 95%. |
