Oil Ocean Zone is a location in the Sonic series. It appears in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and is the remains of where Dr. Eggman attacked a part of the Metropolis; this caused the sewers of the Metropolis to splatter out of the city and rise. The results formed Oil Ocean Zone; the sewers do exist to this day and were a playable stage in Sonic Adventure 2 under the name Aquatic Mine.

Oil Ocean was later set on fire in ArchieSonic issue #218 causing some rogue flames to leak into the Metropolis itself, morphing into the waste ground we see in Sonic Chronicles.

Sonic Heroes 2

Oil Ocean Zone makes an appearance in Sonic Heroes 2. Here, in spite of Metropolis' commercial development, it remains as much a dump as it was immediately after bombing; whilst the earth itself is scorched, the oil has still risen and thus the area is a dangerous waste ground. This is in direct clash to the developed Metropolis.

Aquatic Mine

Aquatic Mine is the sewer system of Metropolis. While it is not visible on the map, it is classified as another part of Oil Ocean because in 'live play' it is only accessable via Oil Ocean Zone; as a result, the only team to play this zone, Team Knuckles, have to traverse Oil Ocean just to infiltrate the mine to grab the Emerald shards. After Eggman attacked part of the city, the mine has not been functioning properly and the sewage has been flowing into Oil Ocean Zone ever since; the Metropolitans are blissfully unaware of this, they are only aware that something not only stinks, but does so in the most obnoxious way possible.
