Gameplay

Basic Gameplay

Nova Road Racers on it's surface appears to be very similar to Mario Kart or other kart racers, and includes mechanics such as drift and boost. Drifting allows you to swerve the cart to help make turns and increase your speed, while boosting determines your acceleration and how fast you go when you ride across boost pads or other boosting mechanics.

Where Nova Road Racers stands out is it's RPG elements. Nova Road Racers allows you take on classes that can alter your gameplay, provides you with a health system, and introduces level and experience point mechanics.

Racer Classes

Racer Classes are a huge important part of Nova Road Racers and are a defining mechanic. Classes change how drift mechanics work on a per class basis- for instance, the Healer Class can heal by drifting and the Wizard class can restore mana by drifting- and alters the stats of a character further. All classes are available for all characters- and no character starts in a specific class, leaving it up to player's choice.

If a class stat maximizes one character's stat, that stat becomes maxed out and any further penalty stat will not be taken into account. Same goes for character stats that become zeroed as a result of penalty stats- they cannot gain extra points when a stat hits zero.

Classes also influence the vehicles that a character can ride as well as change their item pool to get a different set of items. While items can be shared between multiple classes, their percentage chance of showing up is different for each class.

Battle Damage

Each racer and their vehicle has 100 health and their defense against attacks depends largely on their strength stat, which also determines how powerful they are when they use items. While racers and their vehicles can shrug off even heavy attacks when at full health, it can cause them to spin out or need to re enter at a checkpoint if they take a hit too big for their health.

As such, some classes focus on fighting or defending as it can sometimes be the key to victory as opposed to being a speedy kart.

Evolved Racing

As you race, you can slowly gain experience points to level up and gain gear points that you can allocate to your stats to try and make up for your weaknesses. These gear points can be turned on or off in races and your level will determine the kind of opponents you find yourself up against in online play.

Modes

Multiplayer Racing

Multiplayer Racing is the free-play mode with up to 8 players, provided there at least four Nintendo Switch units (for 8 joycons). You can select any unlocked characters on any of the tracks of the cups unlocked and then race. There are options to go through multiple races on different tracks or race as teams. When selecting through this mode, you begin with the ruleset, track, and then characters. You can also switch items and the class system off if you want, but where's the fun in that?

Tournament Cups

Tournament Cups is basically the story mode for the game, allowing you to pick a character and level them up over the course of all the races in the game. You first complete tournament cups and then can go up against spirits who are imbued with special properties for additional challenges. While you can play this with friends, you cannot set up the conditions for each race. You can also collect treasures and quickly earn experience points to put into Gear Points for your character.

Battle Arena

Are you tired of being nice? Don't you want to go apeshit? In this mode, you are set in a arena fashioned after some of the tracks in the game and must quickly find items to use against your opponent to get their health down to zero so you can take a stock from them. You can set the amount of stocks they have and a handicap.

Wizard is a strange class that gives a boost to drifting and uniquely has drift fill up the chances of picking up powerful items as opposed to a speed boost. A magic meter appears next to the speedometer and the more magic you have, the more likely you'll be able to pull better items from this class' selection of items, which mostly consist of magic objects.

Healer
Added by Exotoro

Healer maximizes their drift mechanic, which they use to heal both themselves and their team mates as opposed to a speed boost. They take a minor hit to speed and strength, as well as a decent hit to their boost. They mostly use healing or protective items such as shields and sprouts. Having one healer can be valuable to a party set-up or keep you on the road longer in more intense combat-heavy races.

Tricksters boost their drift primarily, which allows them to do a dodge dash after exiting it. This class is seen as great for newcomers due to it's invaluable use of dodge mechanics and it's general boosts to speed and drift, although it's cuts to strength and boost are seen as the weakness of this class.

Geno Nibroc-Rock
Geno
Added by Exotoro

Geno is a Star Spirit that inhabited a doll to aid Mario in his quest to retrieve the Star Pieces in Super Mario RPG. His true form far exceeds his physical form, but in order to manifest and aid heroes, he needs a physical form in our world. In Nova Road Racers, he acts as sort of the main character of sorts- being the box art character and the story focusing on him as he races with allies to recover the Star Pieces, which are being scattered as prizes across the various cups.

While his body and mind decayed over a period of time, his strength was restored thanks to a Star Piece which granted him his missing strength. He won't give it up so easily, and with his massive base strength stat, it is not best to underestimate the War Father's power.

While Hinoka may be Hoshidan royalty, she is more of a warrior instead, often leading an army of Pegasus riders into battle. She has an exhaustive pledge to her country and people, defending it at the cost of her own sanity and health, often over-exhausting herself. She values the life of others more than her own. Hinoka's strengths are her speed and drift, which give her a lightweight feeling that can outpace her competition provided the player is doing their best to drift to make up for her lack of inherent boost.

Items

Super Mushroom - 2D shaded
Mushroom
Added by Exotoro

Mushrooms give the rider a very fast speed boost that carries into momentum, allowing them to be used for a quick burst of speed or to recover fast from a nasty peel out from an attack. The speed boost also ignores terrain changes so long as the user was on the track when they activated it, allowing them quickly boost over water.

Speed Force
Added by Exotoro

The Speed Force emblem imbues the kart to go at doubled speed for a short period of 3.5 seconds. During this time, the kart gains invulnerability to attacks and ignores terrain changes so long as the user was originally on the track. While it can be used to recover from a peel-out, this isn't advised as it doubles the current speed, not bring you to a certain speed like the Mushroom.

Healing Sprouts can be attached to your team mates or yourself to heal gradually at a rate of 3.5% per second. These last for 4-6 seconds and then wither away. While it is a weak healing item, the amount of use you can get out of it due to it's constant healing buff, as well as it's secondary ability to make sure you always have 1 health point, makes it pretty invaluable.

Mario Circuit is your standard eight-shaped course with two basic hazards- the Goombas that appear towards the first part of the track that can spin out racers if they bump into them without disposing them using items and the Chain Chomp near the ramp that is towards the center of the map. Since this course is meant to be the beginner's course, it has a distinct lack of real obstacles. Since it is primarily based off the Mario Kart Wii version of Mario Circuit, you can see Peach's Castle at the start of the race.

Dragon's Table
Added by Exotoro

The Dragon's Table was where Naga had sealed the degenerated Earth Dragons and other bloodthirsty dragons away after her and the other Divine Dragons had defeated them a war to defend humanity. To create a seal that would last, Naga forged the Binding Shield using one of her fangs and reinforced it's power with orb-like gemstones. It was later transformed into an altar to the Fell Dragon Grima.

The track takes place inside the Dragon's Table, which takes the form of a mostly U-shaped track with a small loop connecting the two ends. There are no traditional obstacles- instead, the player can gather orbs that go into the Binding Shield and can steal orbs from other players by bumping into them. If a player collects all five orbs, they gain the Binding Shield, which rotates around the player to protect them against all damage for 30 seconds before the orbs split apart across the track again.

The Mila Tree is a intertwined twin set of trees located in Valm that was planted onto the graves of Mila and Duma. The tree is considered a sacred place by Mila and her followers. The tree appears in Fire Emblem: Echoes of Valentia and Fire Emblem Awakening.

The Mila Tree is a twisting track that takes place going up the tree and then onto a semi-circle track that then continues down the tree before looping back again. The obstacles in this stage are Cervantes and his army, who throw axes and chuck spears at ongoing vehicles. They appear at the bottom of the tree, which is mostly covered in water save for the roots which make up most of the track. By firing items at Cervantes, you can temporarily remove him and his army for 45 seconds before they return.

Star Road is the final track of the Milky Way Cup, taking place high in the clouds on a giant star-shaped track. Star Road features no railings of any kind on one side, which means you can be bumped off the track and may fall down and need to be picked back up. There aren't any real obstacles here, but the track can be hard, especially if people are attempting to bump you off. Completing this track will you show you the top three racers and if you're the number racer, you'll get the Light Blue Star Piece and unlock the next cup: the Andromeda Cup! Duma will also be unlocked.
