NovaRoadRacers.png

Nova Road Racers is a community-led racing kart game with RPG elements. The project is meant to hold all kinds of content, whether it be original or from any other kind of medium. The project was spearheaded by Toroko for The V² and Nintendo Switch. The game features an class system, elemental strengths and weaknesses, and Spirits of various characters as equipment. At it's core though, it is still a racing game with tracks and characters being graded on four stats of Speed, Strength, Drift, and Boost. The game so far has been received well by editors and viewers alike.

Rules for Editing

  • At this time, the only additions that can be added are classes, characters, items, tracks, spirits, and sponsors. Modes and equipment may be suggested in the comments.
    • All classes need to have stats that equalize to a neutral trade off, a description, and a name.
    • All characters need a total of 200 in stats as well as a starting blessed element. They also need a description and image.
    • All items need to have a description explaining their intended purpose and the rarity rates for each class. They also need a image.
    • All tracks need a image and description going over the course's obstacles and layout.
    • All spirits need a image, special ability, stats, class, and original racer.
    • All sponsors need a image and description going over the sponsor's effects and their rival company. It's okay if the rival isn't there for a while but it would be nice to have that there as soon as possible.
  • Every submission needs to reach a general quality standard- if it does not meet it, it will be flagged and removed if not improved.
  • Incomplete submissions may be removed if they are not worked on within two days.
  • The owner of this article is Exotoro (tbc). If the rules are changed by anyone else, they are to be reverted.

Documentation is available for most sections on the article. See "Characters" for how to work with the portrait code. There are additional information for editors for each section which tells you the vision for each section and the guidelines.

Gameplay

Basic Gameplay

Nova Road Racers on it's surface appears to be very similar to Mario Kart or other kart racers, and includes mechanics such as drift and boost. Drifting allows you to swerve the cart to help make turns and increase your speed, while boosting determines your acceleration and how fast you go when you ride across boost pads or other boosting mechanics.

Where Nova Road Racers stands out is it's RPG elements. Nova Road Racers allows you take on classes that can alter your gameplay, provides you with a health system, and introduces level and experience point mechanics. Additionally, item play allows you to hold up three items at a time, able to trigger between them to launch them.

Racer Classes

Racer Classes are a huge important part of Nova Road Racers and are a defining mechanic. Classes change how drift mechanics work on a per class basis- for instance, the Healer Class can heal by drifting and the Wizard class can restore mana by drifting- and alters the stats of a character further. All classes are available for all characters- and no character starts in a specific class, leaving it up to player's choice.

If a class stat maximizes one character's stat, that stat becomes maxed out and any further penalty stat will not be taken into account. Same goes for character stats that become zeroed as a result of penalty stats- they cannot gain extra points when a stat hits zero.

Classes also influence the vehicles that a character can ride as well as change their item pool to get a different set of items. While items can be shared between multiple classes, their percentage chance of showing up is different for each class.

Battle Damage

Each racer and their vehicle has 100 health and their defense against attacks depends largely on their strength stat, which also determines how powerful they are when they use items. While racers and their vehicles can shrug off even heavy attacks when at full health, it can cause them to spin out or need to re enter at a checkpoint if they take a hit too big for their health.

As such, some classes focus on fighting or defending as it can sometimes be the key to victory as opposed to being a speedy kart.

Evolved Racing

As you race, you can slowly gain experience points to level up and gain gear points that you can allocate to your stats to try and make up for your weaknesses. These gear points can be turned on or off in races and your level will determine the kind of opponents you find yourself up against in online play.

Modes

Multiplayer Racing

Multiplayer Racing is the free-play mode with up to 8 players, provided there at least four Nintendo Switch units (for 8 joycons). You can select any unlocked characters on any of the tracks of the cups unlocked and then race. There are options to go through multiple races on different tracks or race as teams. When selecting through this mode, you begin with the ruleset, track, and then characters. You can also switch items and the class system off if you want, but where's the fun in that?

Tournament Cups

Tournament Cups is basically the story mode for the game, allowing you to pick a character and level them up over the course of all the races in the game. You first complete tournament cups and then can go up against spirits who are imbued with special properties for additional challenges. While you can play this with friends, you cannot set up the conditions for each race. You can also collect treasures and quickly earn experience points to put into Gear Points for your character.

Battle Arena

Are you tired of being nice? Don't you want to go apeshit? In this mode, you are set in a arena fashioned after some of the tracks in the game and must quickly find items to use against your opponent to get their health down to zero so you can take a stock from them. You can set the amount of stocks they have and a handicap.

Base
Added by Exotoro

The base class is a class with no special functions of any kind, keeping the character's stats the same and making drift act as a speed boost when exiting out of it. They have no particular special items exclusive to them. Needless to say, if you think a character plays well without any boosts or stat bonuses required, this is the class for you.

Speedster
Added by Exotoro

Speedster is a class that focuses on well, speed, at the cost of everything else. Speedsters have access to speed boosting items as well as items that can mess with a opponent's speed. Speedsters loose strength and minor drift, but gain a lot of speed and a minor bit of boost.

Wizard
Added by Exotoro

Wizard is a strange class that gives a boost to drifting and uniquely has drift fill up the chances of picking up powerful items as opposed to a speed boost. A magic meter appears next to the speedometer and the more magic you have, the more likely you'll be able to pull better items from this class' selection of items, which mostly consist of magic objects.

Healer
Added by Exotoro

Healer maximizes their drift mechanic, which they use to heal both themselves and their team mates as opposed to a speed boost. They take a minor hit to speed and strength, as well as a decent hit to their boost. They mostly use healing or protective items such as shields and sprouts. Having one healer can be valuable to a party set-up or keep you on the road longer in more intense combat-heavy races.

Tricksters boost their drift primarily, which allows them to do a dodge dash after exiting it. This class is seen as great for newcomers due to it's invaluable use of dodge mechanics and it's general boosts to speed and drift, although it's cuts to strength and boost are seen as the weakness of this class.

Bard
Added by PabloDePablo

Bards are a technique-focused class good for supporting friends in team play or racking up stat boosts on your own. They don't gain any speed off their drifts, but for every 3 seconds spent in a drift, a Bard and all their teammates gain +1 point to their current lowest stat (choosing randomly if the lowest is equal between multiple stats). Their other stats are lacking, but stay drifting to take the lead.

Glitch
Added by IncarnateParanoia

Sometimes also called the "Disney President" class, the Glitch is a zippy trickster class that utilize their namesake ability to deal with enemies at close range. Located near a Glitch character's health is a Glitch Meter, a three-part meter that slowly fills with turquoise lightning. When one or more of the segments is full, honking will cause the character to briefly spasm before "glitching" in the direction the control stick is being held in. The character will be moving at the same speed and facing the same direction after glitching. Unlike Trickster's dodge, glitching doesn't have much invincibility to it, but tackling into enemies with a glitch can deal a decent amount of damage, and the dash can still be used to hop out of attacks' range altogether. Glitches' item selection favors speed boosters and unorthodox traps, and they exchange a hefty portion of strength for improved racing ability overall.

Shadow Self
Added by IncarnateParanoia

The true self. The Shadow Self is presented as bizarre from the very get-go in that all of its stats are lowered, and its item selection is bizarrely well-balanced. Its main claim to fame is its SP - a stat displayed near a Shadow Self character's health, which can be any number between 0 and 50 (or 0 and 100 if the player is at less than 25 health). Drifting, taking damage, and hitting enemies with items will increase SP. Honking while their SP is greater than 0 will cause the character to enter the Shadow Rampage state. While in Shadow Rampage, their SP slowly drains, their stats increase by an amount equal to the amount of SP drained this way, they cannot pick up any new items, and any items they're already holding can be used without expending them in exchange for a chunk of SP. Once the character's SP reaches zero, they exit Shadow Rampage and their stats return to normal.

Stand User
Added by El Guac

A truly bizarre class, Stand User has somewhat foggy applications. Is the racer a Stand User temporarily? Is the car they are in possessed by a Stand? Who cares! It still works! This class slightly increases speed and strength, and introduces a new meter, Stand Power. This meter fills up periodically when drifting or hitting others, and will slightly decrease when being hit. When it fills up completely, a flurry of punches appears from the vehicle, this will damage any nearby racers, and will protect the racer from items. Lasts about 15 seconds. Has increased chances of getting the Stand Arrow item.

EXtreme
Added by Samtendo

Usually, EX Energy isn't something to use on non-sentient machinery because of potential instability. Thankfully, a smaller dose can work on them, including racing vehicles, as long as the racer don't go overboard. Having only Strength improved and the other stats reduced sounds impractical, right? The big news is that not only it have a much higher chance of getting powerful items, especially the Totem of the Undying, but it also makes certain items to become considerably stronger in term of both damage and boost if the player is at 4th place or lower. However, it also makes its strongest available items even rarer if the user is at 1st place by a quarter of usual chance, making its more common items, such as Fireballs, more common. It also inverse the effectiveness for the Light Blessing; Light Blessing with an EXtreme class become strong against the Dark Blessing, but to balance this, it also become weak to the Air Blessing. An example is that the Light Character with the EXtreme Class can drive safely on Dark Trails, but is in trouble on Air Trails.

Firestarter

Firestarters trade in their abilities to drift or boost in exchange for the ability to charge up Pyromania. Pyromania is a meter that charges whenever you are drifting or boosting, which due to the high negative stat will be extremely slow. The plus side is that Pyromania can be used at any time to release an AoE fire attack that will deal huge damage to anyone caught in range. The duration of this AoE attack is maxed out at 10 seconds.

Plague Doctor
Added by El Guac

Plague Doctor is an offensive class dedicated to slowly but effectively draining the health of opponents. Trough drifting, a meter called the Plague Waste Bar will fill up. (This meter fills up relatively quick compared to other classes). When it is completely filled up, the racer will drop a sickly green potion behind them. This potion will expel a toxic cloud, which will very quickly drain the health of racers that pass through it, giving them a poison status effect for around 5 seconds. This class gets a slight speed and drift boost, but decreases the other 2 stats.

Royalguard
Added by IncarnateParanoia

A class geared more towards defense than anything else. Though it loses a good chunk of its speed, it gains a hefty boost in Strength, a surplus of defensive items to work with, and a latent knack for shrugging off attacks without flinching or spinning out. Honking will cause you to guard, and guarding immediately before an attack land will nullify it altogether and push nearby racers away from you. The timing before it is precise and difficult to land in the thick of a race, though.

Librarian
Added by Exotoro

This unusual class adds a bookshelf to the vehicle which allows the rider to use three different magic books. The drift to this class instead focuses on leveling up magic books, with each drift leveling up the active book up to three levels. Honking will discharge the magic spell from the book. The three special magic books are an ice trap, a time slowing spell, and a gravity spell that spins out drivers under a certain strength threshold. Book types cycle after their use. This class also slows and decreases your strength at the cost of a boost bonus.

Cream of the Crop
Added by IncarnateParanoia

On-balance, off-balance, doesn't matter - I'm better than you are. The Cream of the Crop class increases all the user's stats by a small amount. However, they cannot pick up items normally without using Spirits. Instead of having normal item drop rates, they just have a 100% chance to gain nothing from item boxes. Instead, they can press the item button at any time they don't have an item to perform a short lunge in any direction. If they hit an enemy, they'll grab them and perform a wrestling throw on them. This throw will damage the struck enemy, decrease their speed by a small amount, and transfer the target's held item to the user. Missing an enemy, however, will cause the user's speed to decrease.

The Berserker focus on taking out rival racers, with moderate raise for Boost but also decreased Drifting and Strength. You'd say that a decreased Strength doesn't match the Berserker Class well, right? This is because it comes with a Berserk Meter below the Health meter, which increases the more the racer with this Class inflicts and takes. As the Berserk Meter fills up, the Strength stat steadily increases for up to +20 (that's 99% filled meter), it will enter into Berserk Mode after hopping twice in a row. When on Berserk Mode, it cannot use Items, but compensates with doubled Strength (even beyond 100 if applicable) and increased Boost by +20 for ten seconds.

Doubled
Added by Samtendo09

The Doubled Class will multiply the racer into two, at the cost of both having 3/4 Health for each. The racer the player controls is the main racer, while the "clone" simply mimics and follows the player, always at the same speed and direction. And in circumstances that the clone get stuck by anything, it will teleport near the racer at around 100 hammer unit. Projectile items such as Fireball are thrown by both by the player and the clone as well, but the Projectile from the clone is 50% weaker. If the clone is defeated, it will respawn in ten seconds as long as the main racer is still alive, otherwise both will respawn at once. The clone always race ahead of the main racer, making it useful as a meatshield to the frontal rival, but not so much against behind rival. The clone will not count toward lap counts, so the main racer have to cross the checkered lines (or variant) to make a full lap.

It's basically Slow Moe, and as his name suggests, is pretty darn slow. Being a turtle Disrespectoid ain't easy, but luckily he is... well, with a bunch of friends such as Balloona Luna and BobbySue Joiner. But he actually loves this, he considers this freaky. He has extremely bad speed, but do not worry! He's got pretty OK stats other wise, and his strength is the most devastating!

Meta Knight

A legendary knight wielding the fabled sword Galaxia, he's had many encounters with fearsome foes throughout the years and helped stop many a galactic threat. Now, he aims to simply flex his wings, training in races in order to improve his skill for upcoming crises. Meta Knight is a character incredibly reliant on both speed and drifting; his turning radius is actually less than most racers, letting him effectively drift while moving directly forward. This comes at the cost of having to turn more sharply to make corners, however, and while he's very fast, he can't really use boost to enhance that speed in any way. Make every drift count!

Lewa is one of the Toa Mata, six elemental warriors destined to awaken the great spirit Mata Nui from its long slumber and defeat the wicked Makuta. As the Toa of Air, he can manipulate the wind and use the powers of Great Kanohi masks... but he's also naturally adventurous, extremely impulsive, and prefers to work alone.
Lewa's playstyle puts an incredibly high priority on Speed over everything else. Such a high priority, in fact, that his other stats are a lot lower than usual. His steering is unreliable, his offensive capabilities leave something to be desired, and he won't be getting much mileage out of his boosts, but if you can work past his flaws...

Phantom Zelda is one of the multiple incarnations of Princess Zelda, unfortunately, this Zelda met with a bad fate and was forced out of her body, getting her into the state that she is now. Poor Zelda. However, as a spirit, she is able to possess Phantoms, making her more offensive and defensive, at the cost of her speed. Of course, this also applies to this game, with Zelda being able to turn into and turn out of a Phantom during a race, inverting the stats and giving her a boost/attack upon transformation. However, this is a one-use ability, so use it wisely.

Silver Zin's an amnesiac incubus emerging from Satellite 15, dimension-hopping just to participate in Nova Road Racers. Lacking in memories and a moral compass, Silver uses his immeasurable power to litter the atmosphere with chaos and take on mischievous deeds with his equally strange partners. Though he can be unpredictable and really wild, Silver's usually a calm person that you can find stargazing, dressing up, or playing the grand piano. He survives his depressive existence-questioning episodes by fooling around or heading out on obscenely-strange adventures just for the hell of it. In Nova Road Racers, Silver neglects his questionable powers to instead focus on being a speed demon, with an excellent boosting stat and some good all-around speed.

YoRHa No. 2 Type B, or 2B, is an android that was created for the sole purpose of dispatching the machine lifeforms that have invaded Earth on behalf of the humans, serving during the 14th Machine War. Naturally, she almost never questions her orders and does not like to encourage conversation, though she can sometimes come off as hotheaded or display hints of cynical wit. Sometimes this guise falls apart around her partner 9S, especially later on in NieR: Automata where their bond deepens. She's prone to emotionally outbursting when horrible things happen to her partner, leading her to express much frustration and anger. 2B has mostly balanced stats all-around, including a solid Strength stat, though her drifting ability is rather poor.

This Staley, though, is brought from an alternate timeline where he was saved from his horrible conditions, now participating in Nova Road Racers just because... why not? Staley's lyrics denote his struggles against drug use and depression, but it's implied through interviews and through some concert recordings that he was sweet and tough on the surface, and displayed a lot of stage charisma even while he was considerably weak. Riding with former bandmates Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney, and Mike Inez all in the same vehicle, Staley has really solid stats all around minus his strength, which is among the worst in the game.

As she climbed a tower called Tartarus that only appeared in the Dark Hour and fought against powerful monsters that only appeared during the full moon, she slowly unraveled not only the secrets of the Dark Hour but also their connection to her own unfortunate past...
Kotone isn't exactly the burliest fighter, and this is reflected by her low strength. However, her acceleration and drifting are both quite good. Give her a class that can raise her Speed a bit higher, and she can perform great as a racer... assuming she doesn't get singled out by enemy attacks.

Scout (Jeremy)
Added by Samtendo09

Jeremy, also known as the Scout, is a rude, arrogant, hasty and especially psychopathic, but also comical, witty and sometimes easygoing. Although he doesn't seems to be a tough fighter, his Scattergun is surprisingly devastating a close range, and combining with the Scout's speed and double-jumping, makes him a difficult to use but devastating pick class. All that gives an advantage against Demomen and Banner Soldiers as the Scout can dodge projectiles more easily than with bullets.
The Scout's Speed is among the fastest racers, and have a reasonable Boost stat to go even faster if he drifts carefully, but his Strength and Drift stats wouldn't make him ideal in race tracks with tight curves. Giving him a Class that boost his Drift without scarifying too much of his Boost should help him out a lot.

John Egbert is an aspiring (but completely awful) programmer who just wanted to play a certain computer game with his three online friends. Then that game kick-started the destruction of Earth and teleported John and his friends into an alternate dimension called The Medium. There, John and his friends are tasked with ending the eternal stalemate of two warring factions, creating a new world, and becoming gods. Also, he just turned thirteen. Happy birthday, John.
John basically plays like a hammer - heavy and powerful, but a bit sluggish and difficult to control. His Strength is much higher than one would expect from such a scrawny-looking nerd, at the cost of greatly reducing his drifting ability. His speed is average, but his acceleration is a bit on the low side.

Regigigas ULTIMA.png
Regigigas
Added by IncarnateParanoia

The Colossal Pokémon. Ancient legends from the Sinnoh region claim that this Pokémon was involved in the creation of the world. It supposedly pulled the continents behind it using ropes to arrange the world in the way it is today. It is also thought to have created the other legendary Pokémon Regice, Registeel, and Regirock in its own image. These days, it sleeps in an ancient temple in the frigid north...
Regigigas is an utter powerhouse, with immense strength and speed. If it can get started, it can mop the floor with its competition easily. Its main flaw is just how long it takes to get started; its Boost is at rock bottom, resulting in the poorest acceleration ability of any racer in the game. Hopefully you don't spin out without a Mushroom handy!

Added by IncarnateParanoia

Teddie was once just a Shadow, living an uneventful life in the world inside the TV. But one day, three high school students fell into his world. Their appearance got Teddie to start questioning what the world outside the TV was like, as well as how he was "born." Eventually, his introspection caused him to develop a Shadow Self of his own, gain a Persona... and, eventually, he transformed into a fully-fledged human.
Teddie's playstyle is as quirky as Teddie himself. His Boost is superb, letting him get up to max speed very quickly, but that max speed isn't really all that impressive due to his low Speed. His high Drift lends itself particularly well to classes with gimmicks directly tied to drifting like Wizard, Trickster, or Librarian. He is a bit fragile, though, so be careful of hazards and attacks when playing as him.

Corrin is the half dragon child of Mikoto and the degenerated dragon Anankos. Conflicted at almost every turn due to their family legacy, Corrin often has to make difficult decisions, which become even more difficult due to their naive and trusting nature. Corrin believes in the good in people, even when it has been much apparent that it is stripped away. Depending on the route Corrin goes down, her beliefs become formed into three separate philosophies, growing as the bloodshed displayed on the war path grows redder. Her speed is average with a slightly dipping below average strength and drift stat. Her boost is the highest, although even that is mostly average. Theoretical physicist by nature, Gordon has often found himself in situations that weren't favourable for him whether it's being the one picked to perform a potentially lethal experiment, having to escape a massive facility complex while an alien invasion is going on, dealing with a military clean-up squad, being forced into an agreement with a being of unfathomable power, returning to Earth only to find it under the boot of a totalitarian regime, dealing with the nightmares that said regime had unleashed upon the planet or being nearly killed by ferocious telekinetic aliens twice. Still though his determination to press onwards and unyielding willpower has helped him through these tough times and it seems the G-Man has decided to give him a break between contracts. Gordon has the highest possible Boost Stat in the game although this comes at the cost of a sub-par Speed and Drift and very low Strength value.

A long-dead warrior of ancient legend who fell in battle. He was resurrected by the dark wizard Bella... but due to her relative inexperience at necromancy, she wound up fusing him to his steed, essentially transforming him into a centaur. Despite his monster-like form, Cú now sees himself as indebted to Bella for bringing him back to life, and is willing to die a second time to protect her if need be. He bears the Charioteer's asterisk, which grants him unparalleled mastery over armed combat. He can wield three or even four weapons at once, and can deal damage with the ones he isn't wielding by throwing them at enemies.
Cú's Speed and Boost are very balanced, but not especially exceptional. As a warrior, his greatest focus is on his combat prowess, and his almost perfect Strength reflects this perfectly. He's wildly different from the rest, as he's still got a loving and caring family and is into the arts of hip-hop and graffiti... hell, his unique suit was made from spray-painting one of Peter's old suits! Miles clumsily stepped into the shoes of the old Spider-Man after he witnessed his hero's death at the hands of Kingpin, and had to take it upon himself to accept not just his new responsibilities but the changing circumstances of life around him. It would be his leap of faith and morale boost (hah!) that would result in him saving the world with the help of some spider-friends. Miles has an excellent speed stat, but lacks in strength and can have a tough time drifting.

You've heard of "Enter Sandman", right? Maybe "Nothing Else Matters"? Well, those songs are by the American heavy metal band Metallica, and rhythm guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield sang 'em. This James Hetfield's brought from the same alternate timeline as Layne Staley, where they're the best of friends and they're racing together. His lyrics used to be about being against the establishment and fighting against those who abuse control, but now they're about prevailing over death and challenge... at least, I think that's what's going on. He rides with Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo all in the same vehicle, having rather good stats (especially speed) but having some pretty poor drifting skills. We can blame the drummer for that.

At Exceed level 3, its range increases even more and the player swings the sword three times in rapid succession. If obtained by a rider with EXtreme Class currently in 4th place or below, it can swings the Red Queen an additional time, even at Exceed level 3, and charges much faster when drifting.

The Spear of Longinus is a throwable spear that penetrates any shield and ignores elemental statuses to deal a lot of damage to the user. Even 100 strength won't allow you to just tank this spear. However, it can only be thrown once by the original user and can be recovered up to three times by other racers before it disappears. When a driver drives over it, they recover the spear. The spear disappears after 15 seconds if not recovered before then.

The mint (from Plants vs. Zombies) will be launched forward and stick to the first opponent racer it touches. It takes the element of the user and harnesses elemental statuses, performing extra damage to the element's weakness, and performs slight continuous damage over the course it remains (for eight seconds). If the racer who has the mint stuck to them is hit, the mint will explode in a large explosion, doing good damage to the racer and anyone else nearby, including the user. After eight seconds has expired, the mint will simply disappear harmlessly.

Added by Samtendo09

Kremkoins are collectibles in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong-Quest of which most are found in Bonus Levels, and have the insignia of King K. Rool's pirate captain alter-ego, Kaptain K. Rool.
When any racer uses one, the Token Tango theme plays. If the player managed to avoid contact for ten seconds, then it gets the item with the lowest percentage chance of being obtained (aside of items available for all Classes). If the opponent inflict a contact on the racer with a Kremcoin, that opponent steals it and have to avoid contact for its own ten seconds, and the racer who have it stolen can take it back. This may sounds like a high reward, but also present a high risk of letting your opponent getting their rarest item instead!
If the player managed to keep used Kremkoin for ten seconds, the Token Tango victory theme will play, but if an opponent managed to do so instead, then the Token Tango failure theme will play instead.
Since the Cream of the Crop class cannot obtain any item normally from item boxes, shall it managed to steal a Kremkoin (by bumping the user or using the slamming move), it will only receive a moderate speed boost for 10 seconds if it kept the Kremkoin for ten seconds. No doubling effect for the Doubled Class.

Spirits
Added by Exotoro

Spirits are items you can equip up to three of onto a vehicle, which each can influence your vehicle such as giving you access to a item or increasing your stats or attacks in a different way from stats. Each spirit is collected from defeating possessed racers, who take on the qualities of their ghostly possessors. Once defeated in a race, you are able to equip them to your character. A section for Spirits is coming soon.

Spirits

Spirits come in two varieties although both have the same function and act more or less identically. You have your Support Spirits who puppeteer other racers with conditions and status effects slapped onto them to resemble their original works, and then Racer Spirits which are souped up, prime versions of the original racer character who have abilities similar to their source material. Support Spirits are found as part of revisiting old cups in Spirit Rally, while Racer Spirits are collected after defeating the Prime Challenge for each character on the roster.

Support Spirits generally contain a bunch of generic special abilities whereas Racer Spirits are incredibly hard races against Spirits that play to characters strengths while also having a special ability unique to them. Racer Spirits can still be equipped like normal Support Spirits but the difference is only one Racer Spirit can be attached to a character at a time.
