Nintendo Rewind is a video game streaming service developed by Nintendo with the assistance of Microsoft and Tundra Games. It is meant to stream all of Nintendo's classic games, and was meant not as a replacement to the NSO's NES and SNES service, but more so an upgrade. It takes heavy influence from TV streaming services such as Disney+, as well as Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass.
Overview[]
On April 10th, 2021, shortly after both Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the Fire Emblem Collector's Edition were no longer available, Nintendo announced that they were trying to find a way to have a more convenient way to let fans play their legacy content. While NSO's NES and SNES services were doing fairly well, many criticized the service for not delivering games at a fast enough pace, the overall amount of games, and the lack of more 'modern' consoles such as the N64, Gameboy, or even the GCN.
Shortly afterwards, on April 21st 2021, in a video uploaded to both Youtube and Twitter, Nintendo announced they were partnering up with both Microsoft and Tundra Games to make a new streaming service called Nintendo Rewind. Nintendo Rewind is a video game streaming service similar to that of the Xbox Game Pass, allowing player's to play classic Nintendo games from all of Nintendo's generations from the NES, to the Gameboy, all the way to the Wii. By subscribing to the service, users can pay around 14.99 a year to play these games. The classic NSO service, allowing NES and SNES games only, was reassured to still be available alongside Nintendo Rewind, still receiving new games monthly and even getting an updated look to match that of Nintendo Rewind's interface, and by subscribing to Nintendo Rewind, it will replace the NES and SNES apps on the menu into one singular app, and if the subscription ran out, it will revert back to the NES and SNES apps. Soon after the service was released, the original NSO service received free trials of certain games from other consoles, allowing users of the classic service to play games for 1 to 5 minutes until the trial expires, instantly ending the game and erasing all save data on it. Trials of games can be played as much as the user likes, though if the user wants to keep their save data and without the limited time, they must upgrade to Nintendo Rewind.
On April 28th 2021, Nintendo Rewind was finally released. At launch, not all consoles were available, as described in the trailer. Only NES, SNES, Gameboy, and N64 games were available. While this was initially criticized, fans soon warmed up as new consoles were added to the service around every 5 months, first the Game Boy Color, then the GBA, the Gamecube, the Nintendo DS, the Wii, the Nintendo 3DS, and finally the Virtual Boy, which was marketed as a sort of 'bonus' console, being added on April 1st 2022. Around a year later, the Virtual Boy console was rebranded into the 'Bonus' section, containing misc. consoles that don't fit any other console included on the service, as well as Wii U games finally being added.
Main Screen[]

The main menu for Nintendo Rewind on consoles
When booting up Nintendo Rewind, the user is booted to the front page, showing a slideshow of certain games, as well as categories of games based on series, genre, etc. Below it are a few boxes, each with a certain Nintendo console's logo. By selecting one of these boxes, the user is booted to a category of all games released for that system on the service, being able to be sorted in alphabetical order, by genre, release year, etc.
Below the boxes are multiple categories of games, which can be ordered by release year, console, series, etc. As well as the user's most recently played games, favorite games, recommended games, 'REMIX'D' games, and popular games, amongst other things.
Selecting a Game[]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl's menu when selecting it on Nintendo Rewind.
When selecting a game, the user is greeted to a small menu containing the game's boxart, back cover art, game disk/cartridge, release year, genres, and a small description of the game and it's legacy. Below that are multiple sections recommending similar games. On the right of the screen are three options: Play, Extras, and Settings.
Play works exactly how it says it does. After a small loading screen, the user is automatically booted to the game which they can play. When playing a game, the user is able to set save states, rewind either like in NSO or how traditional emulators do it, or fast forward or slow down the game.

The Extras menu of Super Smash Bros Melee
Extras is a small menu allowing the user to view the game's boxart at all sides, it's cartridge/disk, manual (if it had one,) various images of gameplay or archived advertisements, or videos of trailers. There are also small blurbs telling interesting facts about the game's production and/or legacy.
Finally, Settings allows the user to configure how they play the game to their liking, allowing them to play it with certain filters, set borders for games not in widescreen or stretch out the games to fit the screen (not available for DS or 3DS games,) change languages, or erase all save data on the game.
At the very top of the screen is a small menu, which has 4 options, Settings, Favorites, Search, and Online.
Settings[]
A basic settings function, used to remap buttons for each console, have a CRT display over the games, as well as what borders are on display for non-widescreen games. as well as basic settings such as languages, parental controls, and the ability to delete save data of any game the user has played. There are also various options about the service itself, such as how much time is left before the subscription expires, as well as an option to cancel out.
Favorites[]

The Favorites menu, being played on a Nintendo Switch
By hovering over a game and pressing X (Or by pressing 'Favorite' on Mobile,) the game will be 'favorited,' having a small star near the corner of it's box art. By selecting this tab, the user will be sent to a screen containing all of their favorited games. Like searching, the user can sort these games by last played, title, release year, etc.
Search[]
A basic search function, allows the user to search for certain games by typing it's name. It can also be sorted under categories such as series, release year, console, etc.
Online[]
When pressing this tab, the user will be sent to a screen containing multiplayer-compatible games. With this, the user can play co-op games online with either friends or random players around the world, similar to that of the online functionality of NSO's NES and SNES services, Similarly, all Nintendo Wii, DS, and 3DS games that previously supported online but was discontinued can now use previously defunct online features. By pressing a certain icon, users can also chat with one another, either through voice chat or texts, though this can only be done with friends to avoid bullying.

The menu for the Online section of Nintendo Rewind
Additionally, for games that support more than 2 players, players can create lobbies and let friends or randoms join them, as well as set three different password types for security: PIN-Passwords, letter passwords, and symbol passwords. Both types of chat are also supported in lobbies, with the creator of the lobby being able to mute or kick certain players.
Certain games, particularly score-based ones, also have online leaderboards available, having users compare either their scores or the time it took for them to complete the game with their friends or with players from around the world. While only certain games, particularly games from the NES or Game Boy, can have score-based leaderboards, all games on Nintendo Rewind can have time-based leaderboards. Time-based leaderboards also have two different categories, one for any%, and another for 100%.
Games[]
The following is a list of games on Nintendo Rewind, organized by console. Currently, Nintendo Rewind has 1,689 games available to play (counting REMIX'D games).

Currently, the Nintendo Entertainment System has 171 games available on Nintendo Rewind.

Currently, the Nintendo Gamecube has 117 games available on Nintendo Rewind. Because the Nintendo Switch's shoulder buttons are not analog, unlike the Gamecube's controllers, a 'hard' press is signified by the ZR and ZL buttons, while a 'soft' press is signified by the R and L buttons. Gamecube controllers rereleased for Super Smash Bros For and Ultimate can also be used to play Gamecube games, being able to use it's analog shoulder buttons just how it does on an actual Gamecube console.

Currently, the Nintendo Wii has 198 games on Nintendo Rewind, having the second most games on the service. Like the Super Mario Galaxy port in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, shaking the Wii-Remote is designated to the Y button, though can still be done by shaking the controller. Users can also use the Wii's pointer functionality by either using both the Nintendo Switch's touchscreen or built-in gyro sensors. Re Released Wii-Remotes during the Wii U's life can also be used as a controller. Wii Balance Boards can also be used in order to play certain games using the Nintendo Universal Adapter.

The Bonus section (previously known as the Virtual Boy section) has 152 games available on Nintendo Rewind. This section contains miscellaneous consoles, such as arcade games, Virtual Boy games, Pokemon Mini games, PC games, Philips CD-i games, Flash games, and Game & Watch games. Virtual Boy games have a unique feature in which the user can swap the color to replace the red colors. Colors include blue, cyan, green, lime, yellow, white, pink, brown, orange, gray, and colors reminiscent of the original Game Boy. PC Games also have an on-screen keyboard that is slightly transparent, which can be touched with the console's touchpad to play the game. In addition, Flash games now have unique controls to be controlled easier on a console, though can be controlled either with the touchscreen, an on-screen pointer controlled by the stick, or the enhanced controls.

REMIX'D Games is Nintendo Rewind's way of incorporating 'original' games without having to put too much effort. REMIX'D Games are modified versions of existing games on the service, with either major or minor changes without turning it into an entirely new game. Only 'classic' games (NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gamecube) are allowed to be modified, as newer consoles are seen as too difficult.
Currently, there are 22 REMIX'D games available on Nintendo Rewind.
Ninchievements[]

The Ninchievements menu for Super Mario Bros.
Ninchievements is an achievement system implemented in an update for NIntendo Rewind. The system allows users to unlock achievements, known as 'Ninchievements' by completing various tasks in games. Not all games are supported by Ninchievements, as only a handful of them, mostly ones published and/or developed by Nintendo, were able to have them. When a user earns a Ninchievement, it's icon is displayed on the user's account menu on the Online section, in order of most recently obtained. Each game compatible with Ninchievements also has it's own special menu, allowing the user to view all of the Ninchievements they have obtained thus far, and what Ninchievements they were missing.
The following games have support for Ninchievements. Currently, 123 have support for it.

Mobile App[]

The app icon for the Nintendo Rewind app
On September 23rd 2022, the official Nintendo Rewind mobile app was announced via a tweet and Youtube video. The app was described as a way to check up on games without having to go to a console, allowing users to favorite, search, and plan online games with friends. It was also the main source of chatting for Nintendo Rewind, as during online play, users can type messages that would appear on the other user's screen, or chat with friends via voice chat. Alongside this, the Nintendo Rewind app allowed users to play NES and Gameboy games on mobile, a first for any of Nintendo's legacy content.
On November 2nd 2022, the Nintendo Rewind mobile app was released for both IOS and Android devices. As previously described, all NES and Gameboy games could be played on both devices, and could be played in either landscape or portrait mode, and thanks to both NES and Gameboy games having aspect ratios of 4:3, all the buttons required would be away from the game itself, allowing them to be less of a distraction.

The main menu of the Nintendo Rewind mobile app, before GBA or Bonus games were added.
The Nintendo Rewind mobile app would receive future updates, adding more NES and Gameboy games like it's console counterparts. In addition to new NES and Gameboy games, SNES, Gameboy Color, GBA, and select few Bonus games were added, allowing games from those consoles to be played on mobile. For SNES and GBA games, there was also an option to use both volume buttons on the side of the phone as shoulder buttons, in order to reduce even more distraction, though this could be toggled on and off in the settings menu. In addition to new consoles being added, a new option for games was introduced, allowing users to upload their own box art for specific games. Due to the Nintendo Rewind service being personalized purely for them, they did not have to worry about being banned due to offensive imagery. There was also an option to draw your own box art for games, added in a following update. There is also an option to connect to bluetooth in order to play games on mobile using a bluetooth-connected controller, allowing a more traditional style of playing. Due to this, as long as the user had a bluetooth compatible controller, they can play any game from any console on their mobile device. Shortly afterwards, another update was released for both the console and mobile versions of Nintendo Rewind, allowing a device to be used as a controller for the console version, with each button on the screen. For Nintendo DS, 3DS and Wii games, the device's screen can also be used as the touch screen alongside buttons
Soundtracks[]

The main page for the Soundtracks portion of Nintendo Rewind.
In an update added to both the console and mobile versions of Nintendo Rewind, a new category was added: Soundtracks. Using this, users can listen to songs or albums of games released on Nintendo Consoles. Games that previously didn't have original soundtrack CDs now have original cover art made for them. Users can favorite albums as usual, as well as listen to the album in full or just pick and choose a single song to listen to. In addition, users can play a shuffle feature, allowing them to listen to a variety of songs from all different games or only the soundtracks they favorited.
In addition, users can also take songs from different soundtracks and mash them up into Mixtapes, allowing users to play all their favorite songs without having to go between soundtracks or using the Shuffle feature. Users can also create their own album art for soundtracks using the Mobile app, mostly done for customized Mixtapes. Users can also upload their custom Mixtapes online for other users from around the world to listen to, as well as collaborate with other users from around the world or just online friends to create mixtapes together. Additionally, on the Nintendo Switch and Mobile versions of Nintendo Rewind, users can listen to songs even while the devices are powered off. On top of that, in another update, users can listen to soundtracks while playing games in Nintendo Rewind, as well as even have it play during browsing the console's menu or playing other games seperate from Nintendo Rewind.
PC/Mac Edition[]
Around 3 years after the launch of Nintendo Rewind, Nintendo announced and release the official PC/Mac version of the service, made possible with extensive assistance from Microsoft. Due to special security, Nintendo claimed it was impossible for users to rip the ROMs of the games through the PC/Mac edition and upload them to the emulation/piracy sites. The primary purpose of the PC/Mac edition is to play Nintendo games on PC, a first in decades, though it does have some new, exclusive features.

Nintendo Rewind on PC/Mac
A major feature announced for the PC version of Nintendo Rewind is the Custom Games feature. With this, users can get deep into (some) of their favorite games and modify them, creating custom levels, graphics, music, etc,, essentially creating a rom-hack of the game. The creation process of a Custom Game was explicitly design to be somewhat easy to learn, but hard to master. Not all games are supported by the Custom Games feature, as well as not all consoles, only a select few NES, NES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Bonus games are able to be edited into a Custom Game.
After finishing and naming a Custom Game, giving it it's own boxart and description, the Custom Game can either be save to the user's computer or uploaded to the world for others to play. On the Online section of the service, users can browse through Custom Games made by other users around the world and either play them directly or download them, allowing them to be played offline or even edited by the user, though these edited Custom Games cannot be shared to avoid plagiarism. Users can also leave reviews of other user's Custom Games, and give them Stars, which are essentially the form of a rating system. Users can also report Custom Games with offensive imagery or poor quality in order to hopefully get it deleted from the servers.
If a Nintendo Switch is connected to the PC/Mac edition of Nintendo Rewind, users can also transfer their Custom Games to the console, allowing them to be played on the Switch, although Switch users cannot make Custom Games on console. Shortly afterwords, Custom NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance Games were allowed to be transferred to the Mobile edition of Nintendo Rewind if connected, although again, Custom Games couldn't be made on the service, Though in a future update, both Nintendo Switch and Mobile users can browse Custom Games made by others on those devices, allowing them to play, star, review, report, or download games from the device.
Cancelled Xbox One Port[]
According to certain rumours, Nintendo and Microsoft once planned to add Nintendo Rewind to Xbox One, allowing Xbox One owners to play Nintendo games on a console not owned by Nintendo, a first in many years. However, due to Nintendo's strict internal laws, Nintendo swore that only NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and N64 games would be able to be played on Xbox One, not allowing access to consoles such as the GBA, Gamecube, Wii, DS, 3DS, or Virtual Boy. Due to Microsoft wanting the entire catalog of Nintendo Rewind on Xbox One, plans for the port quickly fell through.
Reception[]
When Nintendo Rewind was released in Spring 2021, reception for the service was mostly positive. Critics and fans alike praised the service for it's amount of games, customizability, and how the games ran, claiming it was a much needed improvement from the previous NES and SNES services, while criticizing it for only having a few of the consoles at launch, despite the trailers showing Gamecube games beyond running fine on the Switch. Nintendo claimed they did this in order to make sure each and every game ran and played as smoothly as possible of the Switch, as well as give older games a time to shine without being overshadowed by the more modern consoles. This criticism later faded way when more consoles started to be added at a good pace. Users also criticized the Online feature of the service, while users did like the competitiveness with the online leaderboards, as well as the novelty of playing classic games online, users claimed that while it did run fine for the most part, slow down did happen on occasion, most notably in 3+ player games or with random players. The online of the service was later improved by Nintendo, making online games run smoother online, though slow-down did tend to happen here and there. Regardless, Nintendo Rewind was met with high praise. Critics and users also began praising the updates the service would receive, mostly towards the Soundtracks feature, saying that it was a great way to listen to music of their favorite games legally.
When the Mobile version of Nintendo Rewind was released in Fall 2022, reception was much more mixed than the console versions, though was still fairly positive. Though users did like the novelty of playing old Nintendo games on their phone, many criticized it for only having a limited number of consoles available to play on the service, though this criticism was addressed a tad bit when Nintendo added more compatible consoles in the mobile edition. Users also claimed that, due to the Nintendo Switch already being a portable console, that a mobile version of the service to play games felt redundant. When Soundtracks were added to the Mobile version of the service, reception became more positive, saying it was a much better way to listen to Nintendo music without having to bring their Switch everywhere.
When the PC version of Nintendo Rewind was released, reception was mostly positive, like the console versions. Many praised it for the novelty of playing Nintendo games on PC/Mac, as well as the improvements to Online play, with some saying it was even better than on console. Many also praised the Custom Games feature, saying that it was a nice way to allow developers to create semi-ROM hacks of their games, if not with a few limitations.
Trivia[]
- When asked about why N64, GCN, Wii, DS, 3DS, and Virtual Boy games were not available to be played on the Nintendo Rewind mobile app, Nintendo stated that due to the amount of buttons on their controllers, and the aspect ratios of the consoles being a lot bigger than the NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and GBA's, adding these into the mobile app would've been virtually impossible.
- Those consoles can still technically be played on a mobile device, however, when using the device as a controller with any console version of Nintendo Rewind. Additionally, bluetooth controllers can play any console on a mobile device.
- Occasionally, while waiting for a game to load, the user can play a high-score based Game & Watch game while waiting, being either Ball, Flagman, Vermin, Fire, Judge, Manhole, Helmet, Parachute, Chef, Octopus, or Mario's Cement Factory. It is usually in a gray and white color palette, though by pressing both the L and R buttons, users can play it in the original green and black palettes like on the original Game & Watch.
- Originally, Sega Master System and Sega Genesis, and presumably Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast as well, were to be offered in Nintendo Rewind, however, these were scrapped as Nintendo though they felt too out of place in a Nintendo-themed streaming service. Most Sega games planned out for Nintendo Rewind eventually used the ports or re-releases released on Nintendo consoles.
- Both Game Boy and Game Boy Color games were originally going to be in the Game Boy Color console without just a Game Boy console, though they were split up to avoid confusion.
- Despite this, however, Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are still considered the same console, they are just on two different categories.
- Around a year after Nintendo Rewind was released, Nintendo released a peripheral for both the Nintendo Switch called the Nintendo Universal Adapter, alongsider re released controllers of their old consoles with new ports to connect with the adapter. The adapter is used to play games, mostly Nintendo Rewind games, with controllers from the NES, SNES, N64, etc.
- While any Nintendo controller re released with compatibility with the Nintendo Universal Adapter can work on Nintendo Rewind, Gamecube and Wii Controllers are the only controllers that can work on the service without the need of the Nintendo Universal Adapter.
- When playing Gyromite or Stack Up, two games that required the R.O.B accessory, a small silhouette of R.O.B can be seen in the corner of the gameplay, moving accordingly to do the tasks. Alternatively, the player can input R.O.B's commands to button inputs, or use a R.O.B toy with the Nintendo Universal Adapter.
