NES Arcade (Japanese: Famicom Arcade) is a retired stage on Super Smash Stadium. The final new stage of the "Smash 64 Era", it was the sole new stage to debut in Season 14, and was the 60th new stage to debut. It was played 201 times throughout its lifetime.
Stage overview[]
Starting on top of an NES, the stage transformed into a scene from one of the following games:
- Super Mario Bros. 1
- The Legend of Zelda 1
- Duck Hunt
- World Class Track Meet
- Castlevania 1
- Kid Icarus
- Mega Man 1
- Tetris
- Metroid 1
- Punch Out!!
The stage changed every minute in this exact order. Once the stage reached Punch Out!!, it usually stayed there for the rest of the match, as matches on SSS rarely have a time limit longer than 10 minutes.
Changes[]
None.
Why it was retired[]
Put simply, the representation was redundant: nearly every game represented in the Arcade already had some representation on it elsewhere, with the hyperlinks in the above list taking you to stages that already existed during this stage's lifespan (most notably, MM1's representation had just debuted!). The only franchises new to SSS at the time were WCTM, Tetris, and Metroid, and the latter would start to see representation with the advent of Brinstar and Samus in 1989. Not even the retirement of Duck Hunt in 1990 did much for this stage's outlook.
What ultimately killed this stage was the advent of the Super NES. While plans for a "Super NES Arcade" did exist, they never materialized.
In its own universe[]
This stage was made solely to promote the NES. Its lifetime was roughly the heyday of the NES in North America.
