MissingNo. (Japanese: けつばん Ketsuban, "missing number"), colloquially formatted as MissingNo or Missingno, is one of the most widely known and easily encountered glitch Pokémon. It originates from the Generation I games. MissingNo. has five possible appearances, most recognizably, garbage tiles in a reversed capital L shape. This sprite is mainly purple and white or transparent, with clusters of orange and black pixels.

Encountering MissingNo. can cause numerous in-game glitches, including corrupting save data, flipping and scrambling graphics, and duplicating Trainers on the overworld. However, it also allows for beneficial glitches, such as duplicating the item in the sixth slot in the Bag menu. Viewing a non-glitch Pokémon's summary will undo graphical glitches that MissingNo. has caused.

MissingNo.'s type varies between games. In Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version, MissingNo. is a dual-type Bird/Normal Pokémon. In Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition, its primary type is Normal, and its secondary is a glitch type. In this game, it is stuck at Level 1, but has very large maximum health, with an HP meter that can wrap across the screen.

MissingNo. was increasingly theorized to be a placeholder name for Pokémon that had been removed from the game during development, as it occurred between index numbers for valid Pokémon species. This was confirmed in 2020, when assets for back sprites at those index numbers were leaked.

Biology[]

MissingNo. comes in five forms. The two primary ones give it a blocky, circuit board-like appearance. It can also appear as a fossilized Kabutops or Aerodactyl skeleton, or the Marowak ghost from Pokémon Tower.

Fanon origins[]

Cubone-Kangaskhan link theory[]

There is a theory that this Pokémon was originally the Baby Kangaskhan which could have evolved into Cubone. This was allegedly a heavily supported theory. However, MissingNo. spans many index numbers in the game, and thus, dozens of scrapped Pokémon rather than one specific species.

Pokémon Cyan and Orange[]

In Cyan and Orange Versions, it is explained that MissingNo was created accidentally by Silph Co. in their attempts to create the first man-made Pokémon.

Pokémon Predator & Prey[]

In Predator and Prey Versions, Missingno (as it is spelled in the game) is revealed to be a legendary reality-bending Pokémon, billed as waves of chaos to prevent it from building up and destroying the universe. Prolonged close contact with the entity is said to cause adverse affects.

Appearances[]

Not a Pokémon Anymore![]

MissingNo. appears as the third boss during the events of Game Freak: HAX and the Textured Hero. During his boss battle, he uses glitched Pokemon moves, including Glitch Gun (Water Gun), Shadow Glitch (Shadow Ball) and Glitch Shade (Night Shade). In this game, Error also appears as MissingNo.'s "brother," who was created when HAX tried to clone MissingNo.

Pokémon Grey Version[]

In Pokémon Grey Version, MissingNo. could be fought but is uncatchable. It gives players lots of Exp. An event is set to be held were MissingNo. could be captured. It will change into ANY Pokémon after leveling up, though this change is permanent.

Pokémon Shimmer and Music[]

In Pokémon Shimmer and Music, Missingno will be the antagonist in a Pokéstar Studios movie.

Lunatic Entertainment games[]

MissingNo. (written as "Missingno") makes an appearance in several Lunatic Entertainment games. They appear as rare and hard to find creatures in Amalgam Online, functioning essentially as easter eggs; in Dangerous Wilds as again, rare enemies, though this time like all other Pokémon they can be captured and "tamed" to become Battle Pets; one can be selected as a character to play as in Ultimate Showdown, where it is shown as a wild MissingNo. due to it not being accompanied by a trainer; in Monster Space as an easter egg enemy; and in Troublesome Dicks as a hard to initiate easter egg one-time-only battle opponent. He is also referenced in Mega Somarinoa and the company's adult-themed Pokémon game.
